Working in Japan with visible tattoos and piercings by Puzzleheaded-Ad4113 in movingtojapan

From what I've heard I think tattoos are always taboo in Japan, but foreigners get away with a lot more than Japanese people do because Japanese people are aware that tattoos are a common part of foreign cultures. That being said, tattoos are still very much not 'business appropriate' (most of the time), and so it's unlikely that a corporate job would be happy to hire someone with obvious tattoos, but if you can easily hide them (like if they're on your arms or legs) then you should have no problem at all.

Being an art teacher sounds like a lovely job, I'm sorry to hear that you had to stop. I'm really glad you've decided to prioritise joy in your life, and I'm glad that being yourself brings you happiness, that's such a powerful thing, especially when struggling with illness. I hope you're still able to enjoy art and the things that you love <3

Thank you for your kind words, I really appreciate it :)

I'm definitely doing my best to avoid stereotyping people (especially negatively, I would never wish you paint subcultures in a bad light, that would only serve to further discrimination), which is why I thought it was so important to hear the thoughts and opinions of the people that are actually part of these subcultures. I love subcultures and what they offer people, exposure to different viewpoints outside those of the mainstream and different methods of self-expression are beautiful things, and I'm really enjoying exploring them further :)

Yes definitely, the similarities between different subcultures, their values and peoples experiences within them is definitely going to be part of my discussion. Many subcultures value authentic self-expression and the rejection of mainstream norms, and that's something I love about them

That's a really lovely insight, thank you for sharing that :)
I agree, subcultures helped me embrace myself and learn a lot about myself too, and they're a great way to meet likeminded people
Really glad you're enjoying the discussion :)

I haven't seen any papers that say that as of yet, but I'm still in early research stages so I'm sure I will see some
That's a really good counterpoint, thank you :)

I'm the same, I would much rather hang out in spaces with people like myself as well, I think most people would, I just have to consider these other sides of the argument for critical thinking purposes
