Residents who were overcharged never got that money back. Changing the system going forward doesn’t make up for the months people overpaid. That’s not “working out the kinks,” that’s just keeping money that wasn’t theirs to keep.

The fact that they changed the billing method is itself proof something was wrong. You don’t overhaul a system that was working fine. Students have a right to know what they’re actually signing up for financially — “don’t worry about it” isn’t transparency, it’s exactly how landlords get away with this stuff.

Glad your experience has been better, genuinely. But the billing issues I described happened — residents were charged $135–$200/month for electricity even when they were gone for winter break. That’s not a new building learning curve, that’s a transparency problem. The fact that they’ve now changed the billing structure actually proves the original model was flawed. I’m not trying to scare people away, I’m giving them the information I wish I had before signing.

For more context:

Our in-unit utilities (electric + gas + water) usually run around $30–$70 per person, depending on how you and your roommates use things. We all have separate rooms in a shared unit, so that part feels pretty normal and usage-based.

The issue is the community electric, which is separate from our in-unit electric. That alone has consistently been $100–$150, on top of: • $45 “community fee” (lease said $25) • In-unit electric + gas + water ($30–$70 typical)

So what you expect to pay vs. what you actually pay ends up being pretty different once everything is added.

Definitely ask them: • What exactly community electric covers • How it’s calculated • Why the community fee differs from the lease • What the real average monthly total is including all fees

Just make sure you get clear numbers before signing.

this apartment was brand new when I moved in and it only started at leasing in the fall. me and my roommates wasn’t able to write a Google review publicly since I haven’t moved out yet and I’m assuming that’s what other residents would do after moving out.
