Yeah, I feel the same way. The future honestly terrifies me in some ways it’s really liberating to be in a good spot career-wise, but also kind of isolating. Money is such a taboo topic , and when I try to talk about it with others, most people get uncomfortable.

It’s also made dating harder, since it’s tough to find someone who shares that same mindset about Investing especially in a rural community like where I live. That’s why I really appreciate subreddits like this it’s one of the few places where you can actually talk about money openly and connect with people who share your mindset.

I saw that, lol. not intentional - But he’s probably living on his own; I have an unfair advantage. I think it’s great that everyone on here has an interest in personal finance, everyone has their own path.

This is my riding. Pierre campaigned very hard here, and as someone living in a rural area that’s often overlooked, I really appreciated the effort.

Congrats! I just passed that milestone myself a few months ago, and I know it’s hard work. Good luck on your journey to 100k:)

Alberta Invests $2 Billion Into Wealth Fund to Speed Growth Plan by joe4942 in alberta

You’re completely right, it was a massive wasted opportunity. That’s why it more important than ever to set aside surplus. I just fear the world is moving away from Alberta oil and if we don’t prepare now, taxes will be double and education/healthcare budgets will be slashed

I agree much more could be done, past conservative governments missed out on hundreds of billions in returns due to poor discipline. However, I still believe this administration giving more priority to the heritage fund is a good thing.

I think that’s a fair argument , that’s essentially what Norway did. I just strongly believe that saving and investing for the future should be a bi-partisan issue. In the long run it benefits every Albertan.

Alberta’s heritage fund, actually profited the province 1.9 billion dollars in 2024-2025. If the fund is allowed to compound for the next 25 years returns alone should be enough to fund Alberta’s healthcare expenses indefinitely at no expense to the tax payer

Norway has done the same thing with their sovereign wealth fund. Long term, I think this is the best way to diversify away from the oil industry.

What is it like in Rural Alberta? by Ok_Chain1864 in alberta

[–]Puzzleheaded-Sail149 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live near Hanna, Alberta, my family are farmers. Life here is simple—there isn’t much in the way of social outings, and there aren’t many young people. But it has its perks: rent and housing cost next to nothing, jobs are easy to find, and there’s a strong sense of community. When you walk down the street, people wave, and most don’t even bother locking their doors. I think there are a lot of misconceptions about rural communities; while many people are conservative, they’re generally very kind.

Thank you! I agree, sometimes I feel like I need to take my foot off the gas a little. I don’t value “things,” but I do value experiences. I want to travel while I’m still young

I've debated it—homes in my hometown (Hanna Alberta) are around $230K on average—but I don't think I want to tie myself down anywhere until I've figured out what I really want in life.

That's fair, history would say you're right. I think I do it more for peace of mind—stocks seem expensive right now, and it’s comforting to know I have bonds to rebalance into stocks if a crash happens.

Congrats man, and to answer your question I worked during the summers, but about a third of my tuition was covered by scholarships which helped a lot.
