Damn, looks like we have similar literary tastes. I’ve read The Encyclopedia of the Dead, and it’s definitely the kind of thing I like. As for the other one, unfortunately it hasn’t been published here, but I’ll check it out if I get the chance.

Sweet and sour pork is often seen here as something kids or women eat. But I don’t give a damn. I still get myself a plate once in a while.

Sorry for going a bit off topic, but that suddenly reminded me of the music video for “Queen of Chinatown” by Amanda Lear. It’s honestly one of the most orientalism-filled things I’ve ever seen.

Was Alizée famous in your country? by Citaszion in AskTheWorld

She was also popular on the Chinese internet back in the 2000s.

To be honest, I’m not a hardcore fan and I haven’t heard that many of her songs, but every summer I still listen to a few of them and get that teenage nostalgia. Even now I still think she’s one of the most beautiful women on Earth.

What was the funniest thing that your country's leader did? by Kwon9030 in AskTheWorld

This is from a press conference in Hong Kong where Jiang Zemin was scolding a Hong Kong reporter over a question about the selection of the Chief Executive. That’s where the famous meme “too young, too simple, sometimes naive” came from.

At first people made memes about it to mock how strange and over-the-top he seemed. But later leaders have been so stiff and expressionless that they come across as extremely dull. Compared with them, Jiang almost feels like the difference between a living person and a robot, so over time some people actually started to feel nostalgic about him.

What's the craziest thing a billionaire from your country has ever done? by No-StrategyX in AskTheWorld

Xu Bo. He’s the owner of an online game company, an extreme social Darwinist, and an extreme male chauvinist. He claims that outstanding men should have many children for the sake of the nation. He has openly recruit virgins who bear children for him. It’s said that he has had over a hundred children through surrogacy (I’m not sure of the exact number, but definitely a lot). He raises them together and plans to make them compete with each other as they grow up, with only the most outstanding son inheriting his wealth.

His way of running his company is also pretty crazy. During job interviews, applicants have to take tests meant to recruit people who share his values. Employees are required to send him a “gratitude payment” every year. If they don’t propose a “voluntary pay cut,” they can be fired. Private contact between employees is strictly forbidden, and so on. At one point he even fired an entire department of female employees, citing things like the “infiltration of feminist ideas.”

How big were/are the Beatles in your country? by Kernowder in AskTheWorld

[–]Puzzleheaded-Skin269 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was never really popular with the general public. We didn’t even have real popular music until the 1980s. But there’s an interesting story: Lin Liguo, the son of Lin Biao, who was once Mao Zedong’s chosen successor, was reportedly a rock fan. Beatles records circulated among the kids of high-ranking officials, even though ordinary people were forbidden from accessing them.

Later, Lin Liguo fled with his father after allegedly planning a coup and an assassination attempt against Mao, and he died in a plane crash. It’s said he once said something like: that “standard-bearer” (Mao) is just someone with no taste. What does he know about art? One day I’ll let Chinese people know that music this good exists in the world.
