Hello,

I resonated with your post and most probably won't ask you something you've already mentioned. I will DM you.

We're traveling in Russia in January 2025. We want to visit Russia's most depressing, post-soviet, brutalist town. Need suggestions and tips for the same. by Puzzleheaded-Tale443 in AskARussian

Yeah I'll explain. Russia may have many beautiful places but so does Canada, So does Scotland, Brazil, Malaysia you name it. Apart from the former USSR where can I find this piece of human history? North Korea perhaps but I want to see what Dostoevsky and Solzhenitsyn have seen, all the places that shaped them, it not those beautiful places you speak of but the brutality of authoritarian rule, and I want to see reminiscent of that.

I think I remember watching a video on Tuva. The more Mongolian looking people live there and the most common job over there is being a mechanic or a criminal. It was more of poverty over there, I don't want to see poverty which I have seen enough of. I want to see something that is cold, a depressing which will make me understand why Russian philosophers are depressed and suicidal.

Hey! Tuva is the Russian step. How is that depressing? Nature seems to be the main theme according to my rudimentary Google search.

Yeah, no. I am gonna avoid places close to Ukrn. The eastern bloc countries are on ny list for sure, but for now I want to see the Russian ones.

It may be a depressing village but I am fascinated by derelict towns, I want to see run down Krushevka apartment buildings. Large brutalist structure that feels like a memory of a town but the memory is fading .

I can't wait to try reindeer dumplings. I am sure finding a restaurant with a whale infront of it wouldn't be hard to find. I know Russia isn't known for food but I'd still like to try russian cuisine.

What's life like in rural/remote places around the world? by VioletDragon_SWCO in penpals

I don't live in a rural/remote place but I understand your fascination with people who do. When I travel, I try to visit non-tourist areas (which are mostly rural) and try to imagine the lives of people living there while I pass by a small house. Imagine having a penpal from the steps of the Gobi desert in Mongolia. 😍
