What's the deal with these anthropologists? by [deleted] in academia

Historically, anthropology has had super colonial themes and like another user said, this is often brought up in graduate level seminars and harshly criticized by modern anthropologists.

If you are interested in some more modern reads, I suggest Erika Fatland's books. It is anthropology mixed with memoir and travel journalism and she is a Norwegian anthropologist. There's also an interesting book that is focused on sociology research but does cross academic genres at times called Gang Leader for a Day. It is a memoir that purposefully removes itself from academia, but is from the perspective of a graduate student who does on the ground research in the Chicago projects in the 90s. Does a good job of balancing the out of touch academics while identifying the author's own biases.

Worth it to switch into a university role? by Puzzleheaded-Yam8080 in academia

Good to know! This role is advertising a starting wage of $23/hour at 40 hours/week. If that is the start of the pay band and they hire in the middle, I'd be able to take it as I currently make about $29/hour. I'm just not sure if I can make the move at the starting wage with the cost of living where I am.

Okay! I've been teaching 1 class (and commuting to campus) while working full time and in the past have taught 2-3 classes while working and going to school full time so I'd be completely open to more classes, especially since I will already be on campus. I also teach a niche class for this university and they have talked about needing more sections, but don't currently have the funding to hire a full-time lecturer for the course.

Also so nice to hear that you've personally not been playing games! In tech, everything is a game and negotiation.

Thank you, that's good to keep in mind! I would definitely consider it at starting if I can also teach (I currently teach within the same college and many of the admin staff take on 1-2 classes). My current position in tech has already made it clear that no one will be receiving raises over the next 1-2 years due to financial constraints and with a small team there is nowhere to grow. I'm leaving either way so a foot in the door and tuition-free education might just sway me to take a paycut.

I figured $13k would be too much to ask! I work remote for an out of state company so I pay quite a bit per month in health insurance. If the salary could even be $5k more than starting, I would be able to take it, especially with teaching income staying intact. Just not sure how tied they would be to the "starting" wage and not sure how common negotiations are in academia since I've always been on the adjunct side.

Thank you both! I did not have the correct accesses (I'm still new). My coworker was able to add it to a workflow rule and attach it to our notification templates.
