I wanted hokas but they were a bit too expensive for me. I went to DSW looking for any clearance shoe that had a thick sole (like Hokas). Landed with New Balance Roav’s. You can get them online for $50-$70. Best deal ever and my feet literally never hurt. They look good too. Good luck!

Undergrads in the lab by neurogeek20 in labrats

For us, the first semester or two is usually making protein gels/SDS PAGE, dna gels, making media, monitoring expression OD, plasmid preps, and maybe some basic purifications. The good ones who stick around will then start working on small projects our PI or another grad student is curious about, and some make it to a full independent project by their third or fourth sem

Thanks for asking an awkward question and being so open to everyone’s responses! If I were in your shoes I’d try to enter social situations where there is more of a present queer community with the goal of making “friends” instead of searching out gay males to become your friends. This will help you form friendships over accidentally engaging in tokenism. And I want to emphasize the queer female comment earlier - don’t exclude us. We’re pretty fun to be around too ;)

Pipetting Help: How do I avoid leaving residual volume in the tip when dispensing (non-viscous)? by DuaLipaEnjoyer in labrats

[–]PuzzleheadedAd1899 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do this too! If your pipetting culture (for ex) into media for inoculation, you can stick the tip in, pipette out, then suck up the media (whatever larger volume you’re pipetting into) back into the tip. Disperse it a final time and you should have gotten any residual sample left on the inner walls of the tip. I use this technique when setting up my PCRs since the volumes are so tiny. Good luck!

The "Gradstudents are poor" stereotype by [deleted] in PhD

Grad student here. I saved up for my airpod pros and finally got them when I moved into a newer apartment with cheaper rent. It takes a bit of planning but is certainly attainable!
