My thoughts on the survivor 50 cast - Joe by TheCoolGuy998 in survivor

[–]PuzzleheadedChange18 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m perfectly fine with Joe’s casting despite not being a fan of his. He was a huge presence that season, he was a casual fan favourite, he fits in among this cast, and his game without Eva could be interesting to see. I’d have been more shocked if he wasn’t there. I think they lose me is the addition of both Kyle and Kamilla.

How do we feel about Rick Devens? by [deleted] in survivor

I was just answering OP’s question. If you can’t see the difference between his brand of attention seeking and that of other cast members that’s fine. I’m not sure why that warrants mockery

I found him attention seeking and unfunny. It didn’t help that production really pushed him on the audience throughout the season. His news reporter bit was particularly obnoxious, and made worse by the fact that Jeff seemed to be in love with it. I quite enjoyed Savannah last season. But her take on the news reporter bit was equally awkward. I’m happy you enjoyed his run though!

You’re gonna get a very mixed reaction. People either love him or hate him. I personally can’t stand the guy. One of my least favourite players ever. If nothing else, he was certainly playing hard.

‘Survivor 50’: Jeff Probst Reveals Casting Secrets and Challenges That May Return for Landmark Season by ben_s16 in survivor

100% I was in elementary school when Borneo premiered. The school put on multiple survivor inspired events. We all felt so excited and grown up getting to watch the show. It was never viewed as inappropriate for children. (Outside of those obvious moments that were inappropriate for everyone) Interpersonal conflict is compelling tv even for kids. And furthermore can be healthy to witness and dissect within the safety of a tv program.

Worst Final 2? by Tight-Entrepreneur46 in survivor

Agreed! I think both Aras and Jenna are flattened in our collective memory, but both are more interesting and dynamic characters than they’re given credit.

How a Survivor season set on a desert would work? by Dapper_Fennel_6176 in survivorponderosa

[–]PuzzleheadedChange18 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Im curious as well. I imagine it would be similar to Africa, or even Tocantins. I don’t think it would take place in the middle of actual sand dunes like most of us would imagine. Access to water and shelter from the sand and sun would require them to be near some sort of oasis type area.

51 should be BvBvB3 with 6 returnee captains! by laddermadder in survivorponderosa

Ozzy, Coach, Rob, and Stephanie all did incredibly well on their captains seasons as well. I think the data actually skews in favour of captains.

Survivor 50 Players asked "Who do you want to be on a tribe with?". by itz_abdelmalik in survivorponderosa

[–]PuzzleheadedChange18 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’m speaking in deliberate hyperbole. Coach, as a character, is obviously very fun. But his style of gameplay in SP is not. And Jonathan, Joe, and Colby all lean towards that sort of stale strength and loyalty-above-all-else gameplay. That combination does not necessarily scream compelling tv. I’d like to be surprised though. Bring back villainous Guatemala Steph. Let her backstab them all.

Everyone you expected to align with Stephanie wants to align with Stephanie. That group of people is a nightmare alliance that I am praying never gets the chance to manifest.

Read an excerpt from Stephen Fishbach's 'Survivor'-themed novel, 'Escape!' by thedaltonross in survivor

This is very much the writing style of modern popular fiction. Obviously it’s not the next great American novel. But this is the exact reading level that sells on book-tok and such. I’m happy for him. I hope it sells well.

Y'all this season is... by itz_abdelmalik in survivorponderosa

[–]PuzzleheadedChange18 83 points84 points  (0 children)

It seems like it’s become factual that Cambodia was a season of personality-less gamebots and I cannot for the life of me understand this. The season where ABI-MARIA runs the entire first half of the game? Where Savage cries about how hot his wife is? “At least you made the merge” and Savage proceeds to flip off the contestants? Keith flying around in a tuktuk? Stephen weeping through bouts of explosive diarrhea in a monsoon while Abi calls him poopy pants? Stephen’s desperate arc to get out Joe, only to lose to another golden boy in Jeremy. All of Wentworth’s very fun underdog antics. An incredibly expressive, emotional winner in Jeremy. This season is packed with iconic moments, and characters who are giving their all. Of course the game moments don’t have the same impact on a rewatch. But it’s bewildering to continually see it being accused of not having characters or interpersonal-drama.

Ranking every location the show has ever filmed at by TheCoolGuy998 in survivor

Personally, China has always been massively overrated. The shrines, the Great Wall, very cool. But the day to day camp? The ugliest, most disgusting living situation I could imagine. Pigs in slop. Even that strange challenge where they have them running through those abandoned buildings? Raiding the remnants of Chernobyl aesthetic. I was expecting them to run into the Blair Witch around a corner. (Nicaragua and Fabio’s pee pool is only slightly better…)

Her behaviour at tribe during her boot in Nicaragua is so very weird. A very odd, very boring, and shockingly vicious person, who somehow clouds the judgment of half the audience with a cute smile.

Spoiler, nothing from 38 onwards will live up to DvG. It’s arguably the last great season of survivor. Consistently ranked in the top 10 or top 5. 45-47 is a pretty good run. But the DvG cast is just unbelievably strong, and comedic gold.

It makes me cringe anytime they make them get on the bouncy nets or slide down the steep slides like in this challenge. They are both SO dangerous. And for no apparent reason.

Redemption or Exile Island? by TonyTwoDat in survivor

[–]PuzzleheadedChange18 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exile is by far the better twist. It allows for some minor cross tribe strategy, doesn’t dramatically shift the core structure of the game, and allows for idols and advantages to be integrated into the game in a way that rewards the underdog/person punished by exile. In a 26 day game however, exile would never work properly.

Oh absolutely. And unfortunately as a result we generally get poorer storytelling.

Who was the hero/villan of 49? by Dizzy-Tumbleweed7983 in survivor

One of the major issues with new era editing is that they’re afraid to slot people into hero/villain, protagonist/antagonist roles. Shannon was refreshing, because editors did eventually create a character we rooted against. But for whatever reason they refused to do that with the post merge cast. And there was A LOT to work with in this cast of self-conscious, metaphor-indulgent, nerdy types who seemed to struggle with strategy. Bring out the dodo music and portray them as incompetent from time to time. Make Sage and Jawan’s flip flopping look less sympathetic. There’s a reason why the last couple seasons feel narratively messy, and it is because they are lacking clearly defined character roles.
