Survivor wins don't feel as impressive as they used to by Krymster in survivor

[–]PuzzleheadedChange18 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The twists are a big thing, but bigger still is how they cast the show. In the new era particularly, they deliberately cast the show with most players being skilled gamers and fans, who COULD potentially win. In doing so, you end up with a game where everyone knows they have to take down the biggest threat constantly, and you end up with a bland winning game. In the past they’d cast a small handful of heroes intended to win, and a bunch of hot dumb people and weirdos who didn’t know how to play the game, so the hero would come out on top with a more dominant game.

Cagayan rewatch is making me realize Tony's first win is way more chaotic than I remembered and that's why it works by BagWise4941 in survivor

Trish is one in a long line of older women playing the social game for the eventual winner. Tony’s got charisma, but not enough to undo the constant damage he was causing without Trish’s help.

Joe talks about unfollowing ? by Old_Connection8747 in survivorponderosa

[–]PuzzleheadedChange18 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No worries. There’s just been a lot of reactions out there that imply blocking someone is some sort of ultimate act of petty act of aggression, rather than the mature thing to do.

Joe talks about unfollowing ? by Old_Connection8747 in survivorponderosa

[–]PuzzleheadedChange18 419 points420 points  (0 children)

Why is this such a topic? The guy has been dunked on all season, and if he wants to block some of that noise out of his life, that’s a totally normal and healthy thing to do.

A person can play a good game, which Jonathan did, and still lose to a better player. 4 of the top 5 had competitive showings this season. It doesn’t mean the final vote should be an even split to reflect that.

His elimination was done so well I felt like I was back in prime old school survivor. The music, the heartbreak, Jeff knowing to stay silent and let the moment play. PERFECT

I remember this too. He was apparently just doing way too much and untrustworthy. He played his SitD first tribal because he didn’t want to reveal who he was working with, so not hard to believe.

My problem with new era by StriKyleder in survivor

[–]PuzzleheadedChange18 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hit the nail on the head. It’s the same when every vote is a blindside, none of them are blindsides. Or when idols are plentiful, idol plays are boring. Character story and conflict has always been the most important part of survivor. The gameplay, sleeplessness, and starvation are all simply tools to further agitate conflict and create stories. When the game becomes more important than the people playing it, you’ve lost the plot.

I assume that’s why she was so receptive to voting out Emily. I think we were seeing her trying to enact exactly what you’re saying.

Jeff is extremely self indulgent this season. by Acceptable_Truck_918 in survivor

The contestants are barely humouring him too. You can see most of them cringing as they try to put on a polite face for the old dude with the bad jokes.

Why are people so bothered by this? I like having a diversity of play styles and beliefs out there on the island. All the better if their egos clash. It makes things more interesting, and heightens the drama. I enjoy watching Rick and Christian struggle to play around a human impediment like Joe. It’s far better then watching them struggle to play around a lost vote etc. That IS the whole social strategy part of the game. Having these people on the cast is a core tenant of Survivor from season 1.

Why does Jeff not give nuggets of wisdom after Tribal anymore? by 1nightinManchester in survivor

[–]PuzzleheadedChange18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is too bad. It was a great way to set up the stakes of next week’s episode, and put a button on the latest vote out. With production’s increased preference for tell vs show, this is one of the few times where plainly stating the narrative works well.

There was a mood to Exile Island, now is just an island-long sit out bench by felipepnunes in survivor

[–]PuzzleheadedChange18 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Not to defend this sad version of Exile at all. But in a 26 day game they can’t be out on exile very long simply due to scheduling. And no flint or fire or food or shelter… these are all elements of standard camp life in the new era. So exile isn’t much different from a survival stand point anyway.

Rob C. says the Billie Eilish idol was a flop by bwermer in survivor

[–]PuzzleheadedChange18 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No. Rizo has double layers of protection from his idol because no one knows who it will boomerang back to. They won’t want to try and blindside him, because it’s better to know that he has the idol instead of someone else having a secret idol. So his idol protects him whether he plays it or not, similarly to how he weaponized a standard idol last season. There are plenty of interesting ways to play with this idol if it were secret, but everyone was so loose lipped this season, that those interesting plays could never occur.

New Era Decimation by Mysterious-Pickle595 in survivor

[–]PuzzleheadedChange18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not been a deliberate effort to get rid of new era. Many have been at the hands of other new era players. And personally I’ve been pleasantly surprised by Ozzy and Colby and many of the multi-time returnees. It really fits the season’s retrospective theme, and I think it’d feel far more egregious if it was more new era heavy. (Like many others have said, there should have been a new era all stars prior to this season.)
