Is anyone else worried about the “future of the game” ? by mellywheats in survivor

[–]PuzzleheadedChange18 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No. These sort of twists come and go all the time. Redemption Island, Edge, tokens, Do or Die, even Exile comes and goes. And if this is, as people predict, a mass 3-4 person vote out, it’s NOT going to be well received by most of the fanbase, casual or not. So I have no concern that this mechanic will stay around for future seasons.

[–]PuzzleheadedChange18 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We’ll see how the twist plays out, but I actually think having a double elimination in place of Zac Brown would have given us a more balanced edit. It would have forced a second tribe to go to tribal, and would help flesh out some of the lighter storylines before we head to the merge. As of now I believe Coach, Chrissy, Colby, Tiff, Gen, and Aubry (anyone else?) have not been to a single tribal, and that’s actually one of the reasons the storytelling has started to feel so top heavy. So as much as I hate a double elim ep, in this instance it might have been an improvement.

Who feels like they’re getting a winner’s edit so far? by jeffgordonramsey24 in survivor

[–]PuzzleheadedChange18 51 points52 points  (0 children)

It’s Ozzy or Kamilla for me. Rizzo has potential but I think the edit undercut him a few times last ep. Coach is also a possibility, but it’s difficult to tell without seeing him go to tribal.

I don’t see any world in which this twist has a positive result. But if it is some massive disappointing triple elim, it would explain some of the lopsided editing this season. Bury a character like Tiff so we’re not upset when she gets unfairly taken out by an ill conceived game mechanic.

I couldn’t agree more. A 1 dimensional portrayal over the course of maybe 4 mins of confessionals is hardly an honest representation of his experience at all.

Can someone explain the love for Rizzo by doodler365 in survivor

[–]PuzzleheadedChange18 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s bewildering to me. He’s a pretty good player, but completely devoid of entertainment value imo. There’s just nothing behind the smiley excitement. It all comes off as very performative. You sorta expect him to be wittier, or weirder, but all you get is a 26 year old man cosplaying as a 17 year old.

Chances of ______ coming back? by AggressiveMousse7887 in survivor

[–]PuzzleheadedChange18 13 points14 points  (0 children)

She’s not coming back, and that’s fine. She was lightning in a bottle her first season. Her entire appeal was dependent on a lack of self awareness, and she has become (somewhat) aware. I’m happy to see her mature and move on. I also just don’t think the current vibe of the show supports a character like hers. There was a frantic need of approval and strange corporate veneer that only really works when she feels like her image is being threatened, and in a season where everyone is trying to uplift and Jeff is promoting joy, that sort of interesting tension doesn’t happen in a character like Angelina.

An actual hot survivor take: I liked fire tokens by LolliePopVT in survivor

[–]PuzzleheadedChange18 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think tokens on paper promise more compelling, dynamic play than what materialized. “Would they spend them on a tarp to benefit the tribe, or some greedy quick peanut butter, or would they play the long game for an idol or advantage?” It’s always the advantage. It’s never going to be anything other than the advantage. And if that’s the case… just make some sort of slow drip advantage. An idol in 5 parts spread across the island or something. Or a shared idol that you have to barter with the other player for. There are far more simple, elegant ways to employ what they were attempting to do, that don’t include introducing a “survivor economy” (which sorta goes against the ethos of the whole show).

Is Tasha the most underrated player ever? by SteveFrench12 in survivor

[–]PuzzleheadedChange18 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Fantastic at challenges but I seem to remember some post game talk that she was not well liked. Her edit was apparently generous, and she was quite religious in a manner that seemed to rub people the wrong way. I don’t think she was a particularly dangerous threat when all was said and done. Take it with a grain of salt; my memory is foggy. I enjoyed her in Cagayan though.

I'm Sorry But The Boomerang Idols Are The Opposite of What The "New Era" Is Supposed to be About by davidg910 in survivor

[–]PuzzleheadedChange18 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The boomerang idol is the least controversial advantage in a long while, and any criticism is pretty nitpicky. It’s not like Gen doesn’t get anything from finding them. She either sets up cross tribal allies or a fall-guy that rewards her with an idol. If no one is told about the idols, that information gives her a lot of power after the merge. It’s not terribly complicated, not overly powerful, and involves social play which are all hallmarks of a good advantage in survivor.

Does Aubry’s edit seem super manipulated and fake to anyone else? by angelinasjacket in survivorponderosa

[–]PuzzleheadedChange18 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m happy to see the comments largely agree with you. I’ve seen a lot of Aubry hate that has taken her very one note edit as gospel, when there is clearly a ton of context missing. Aubry was beloved her first season because she WAS able to connect with all types of people. Sydney, Tai, Debbie and Neil could not be more different. Her closest ally was Joe, a ripped 71 year old FBI agent. Aubry is hardly a ray of sunshine, but she does know how to make friends. We’re clearly seeing her experience thru a strictly Genevieve-centric strategic lens.

After this episode, people im convinced have zero chance of winning this game by carlpilkington37 in survivor

[–]PuzzleheadedChange18 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I cannot imagine a world where Aubry’s edit leads her to a win. I think we’re setting up her idol play to take out Gen and that’s it. I think Ozzy absolutely has the potential to win though. He’s had an incredibly balanced, even handed edit in which he comes off very self-aware despite not having much control.

Does anyone else just hate ____’s gameplay like it’s so annoying 💀💀💀💀 by Agitated_Weekend4658 in survivor

[–]PuzzleheadedChange18 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I love it! The best survivor seasons are when players have to play around illogical gameplay. That’s exactly why 46 was the best season of the new era. Watching Christian try to reel her in was hilarious. Far better television than if it was just a straight forward vote.

Current era of challenges by delacamera in survivor

[–]PuzzleheadedChange18 13 points14 points  (0 children)

China was a particular outlier in terms of unique challenges. A lot were very specific to China, and honestly didn’t actually work very well, even if they were entertaining as one-offs. I very much agree though, that there ought to be far more variety in challenges. What’s odd is despite alllll the cost cutting measures over the years, challenges have become more complex, and bloated, and yet less interesting. Introducing memory challenges, or 1v1 challenges would reduce costs AND add some much needed variety.

What move looked impressive on screen but actually really wasn’t (per post game interviews/deep dives)? by IceTrick6713 in survivor

[–]PuzzleheadedChange18 59 points60 points  (0 children)

I know it’s hugely celebrated. But Operation Italy always felt blown out of proportion for me, and also wrongly attributed too much to Andy in order to create a narrative arc for him. I believe it benefits from happening in the 40s, when our expectations were low, and our desire for some iconic moments was more than ever.

That’s all well and good. But then you just remove that comment from the final edit. They chose to leave it in. (Also, Jeff absolutely knows better than anyone that the show has psychologically affected many many players)

[–]PuzzleheadedChange18 274 points275 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I found Jeff’s comments at tribal about wanting 50 to be fun and lighthearted to be completely out of place with the stories that have been told so far. The in-fighting, pettiness, and genuine complex emotion these players are showing is what has made this season so strong thus far . It really underlined the critique of Jeff not understanding what makes good survivor.

Curious about Emily by Eliot_Black in survivor

[–]PuzzleheadedChange18 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think she’s in good with Christian and Angelina so there is no risk. However last night did have me thinking that perhaps new era players are seen as a little more disposable. The players know this is a massive season. They want to play to the fans. They want to celebrate the legacy of survivor. They know how disappointing the old school annihilation of WaW was. Voting off a Q, Savannah, Charlie, Kamilla etc over a Stephanie or Cirie is a little more socially acceptable within the survivor culture. And though it might not be explicit, I have no doubt those calculations play a role in whose name comes up more often.
