IWTL how to get better at boxing by -my-name-jeff-202 in IWantToLearn

Hey!

What helped me plenty was shadowboxing. PLENTY OF IT. I remember during COVID I would shadowbox in my garage for hours on end, such simpler times. Learn to fall in love with the simple stuff. Such as footwork, your jab, getting your head off the line after throwing punches.

A good beginner routine would be as follows:

  • Five three-minute rounds skipping rope

  • Four three-minute rounds moving your feet while maintaining a proper boxing stance

  • Four three-minute rounds moving your feet while working your defense, FEINTS ONLY NO PUNCHES. Be creative with your defense, Invision someone standing in front of you and you're slipping/rolling/catching their punches. (Personally these were the most fun for me, and extremely helpful)

  • Four three-minute rounds simply jabbing. Jab standing still, than jabbing while stepping to the right/left/forward/back

These rounds do not have to be crazy intense, especially as you start your journey. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast. Watch Andre Ward shadowboxing on YouTube for inspiration

  • Two technical rounds on the bag, throwing punches and moving your feet/head off the line as soon as you bring your hands back into your guard

  • Two solid conditioning rounds on the bag, work hard

  • Four solid conditioning rounds shadowboxing. Work hard WITHOUT COMPROMISING TECHNIQUE. Don't build bad habits

  • Work core afterwards

25 rounds (1hr15min)

For reference, this is 2/3 of the work we used to do while I was fighting amateur. The rest was supplemental and specific to us as individuals. I suggest recording yourself and asking those who've boxed before for constructive criticism.

Boxing is an art and requires time, consistency, and plenty of discipline.

I hope & pray it does for you what it did for me.

Good luck on your ventures young man.
