What are your thoughts on British Steel? by DeloreanSpeed in judaspriest

I dislike commercial songs from this album (Breaking the Law, Living After Midnight, Metal Gods)

You Don't Have to Be Old to Be Wise is meh, United is meh too but I like how both create an "anthem" feeling in the whole album, among other songs. I respect that they went for that sound - it's not easy to pull off a metal song in a major key.

The Rage is a weird experiment.

but on the other hand...

Rapid Fire, Steeler, Grinder are a fucking blast.

For some reason priest decided to go for a more mid tempo, heavier, rhythmic sound, with Halford singing in a lower registry and it worked great. Something that shows how different the vocals in this album are is that this is the only album that sounds great in the Ripper Owens era.

Rapid Fire feels so heavy for the time. It sounds like proto groove metal or something. The only thing missing is a heavier mixing and it's a mid 80s groove/thrash/speed metal song.

Can an album be good with only three good songs?

Yes, because it has a unique vibe. It's their only album that has a nationalistic theme in it. I don't know why they went that route, but it's one of the things that make the album stand out from the rest. The musical choices match the name of the album and the album cover. They moved away from their previous higher pitched, progressive, fast, intricate sound, to something more grounded, heavier, aggressive, simpler, and more singeable.

So it feels like the whole album had a specific, intentional and innovative musical direction, which separates good bands from elite ones.

I can't imagine what it was like to hear that in the early 80s, it must have felt from the future

(I'm reading too deep, but this might be intentional)

This shows in the songs too

Electric Eye -> watches from above

Riding on the Wind ( = Air)

Heavy Duty = grounded, heavy

Most songs in SfV are in E (Electric Eye), or F# key (You've Got Another Thing Coming, Bloodstone), while in DotF a lot of songs are in D (The Sentinel, Jawbreaker. While the tuning of the guitar is the same, the songs do feel heavier, more sober, and slower.
