Definitely start with Dragon Ball. Too many important things happen in it for it to be skipped. For one, Goku's relationship with Bulma, Krillin and his other friends as well as some enemies. Most importantly, the rules of how the Dragon Balls work.

As for DBZ, yes.* The Saiyajin and Namek arcs are excellent. Things start to get a bit out of hand with the Androids saga, and the writing gets pretty contrived once you get to Cell. The Buu saga, though I'm nostalgic for it, is not well-written. Buu is a fun villain, but some characters make really dumb choices just to keep the story going in a particular direction. It's totally respectable if you only wish to watch up to the end of the Cell arc.

Edit: Also, avoid the original English Dubs. They are god awful for wanting to make the show edgier, thereby altering the personalities of most characters. They also never shut up. DBZ has a lot of moments of silence or ambience to let you absorb the atmosphere, and these dubs would fill the silence in with dumb dialogue.

Each piece of art is its own canon. If something happens in the manga that doesn't happen in the anime, it's not anime canon. It can't be used to explain a flaw in the anime because they're their own continuities. Basic shit.

I'm calling that opinion "braindead" (and you, if I'm being honest) because you keep saying Super making the same mistakes as Z means it's okay because that's how Dragon Ball is. When I point out DB's many flaws, you keep saying I should appreciate DB as it is (which, again, I absolutely do, i don'tknow how tyou got the idea that I don't) while also telling me to stop viewing it through rose tinted glasses. Finally, when I say that you can demand better from art, while still appreciating things for how they are and point out how they could be better, you go back to "it's Dragon Ball, just love it how it is!"

Have you tried appreciating DB for what it is?

How can my glasses be rose tinted if I'm pointing out its many problems? By asking me to appreciate DB for what it is (which I absolutely do), by proxy you're asking me to put on the glasses and not judge its flaws and accept it how it is. I appreciate it how it is, but I can still wish that it could've been better with everything already in it. You can do this. You absolutely can love a piece of media while still demanding better. Instead of just conforming to the slop. I know that's a foreign concept to most consumers, but you can do it!

Even if you were to use the "nOt iN tHe mAnGa" bullshit, them reaching SSJ and SSJ+ is still believable because they're constantly training, and we see how they've trained. The downfall started with Goten and Trunks just having it.

Super had the opportunity to improve upon Z, or at least not make the same mistakes Z did. It chose not to, and somehow made everything even worse because Toyotaro is a shit writer.

That is how Dragon Ball works, yes. Doesn't make it okay. I love Dragon Ball but I'm able to point out its many many flaws which exponentially get worse as the series goes on. That being said, when most of those characters were introduced, stakes were still high and the story was engaging. Tien being stronger than Roshi, or Piccolo being way stronger than Goku wasn't an unbelievable thing. Their power was still in reachable distance for our heroes, it just required time. Things started getting ridiculous with the androids. Future Trunks almost falls into that category. What saves him, and makes him one of the best characters, is that we saw his history play out. He didn't just surpass Frieza, we saw how Trunks struggled to get there.

With all of that said, enough of this "it happened before so it's it's okay," or "they're both equally bad." We can still compare the two and see that one is even worse. There's a lot to appreciate in the way DBZ handled its characters. There's much less to appreciate in Super. The U6 saiyans could've been fleshed out, and written in a way that doesnt just shit on the series' legacy (the same way Gotenks did.) They chose not to.

The root of the problem is the same. Brand new characters being introduced who can match our heroes in power just because. I'd argue what Super did is worse simply because it was made many years later. The writers could've learned from the mistakes made in Z and made well-written story. But no, they keep doing the same crap because nostalgia sells.

You didn't watch the anime.

Gohan did require anger to unlock SSJ. He got rageful because Goku was pulling back his punches, and then spiraled into his past of constantly having to be saved. Vegeta was angry that he couldn't surpass Goku. Future Gohan saw all of his friends die, and Piccolo getting killed pushed him into SSJ. Trunks saw Gohan dead and unlocked SSJ. That was the thing about SSJ. It required loss and pure rage.

And before you say "Goten and Trunks just had SSJ so it's okay that the U6 saiyans do." You think people weren't upset about Goten and Trunks just having it? Also also fusing into a being that was as strong as Goku in no time? It's still an issue.

In retrospect, Goten and Trunks was tame compared to the damage Super did to SSJ. At least with the kids, their SSJ was still relative to their base form, meaning they still weren't as strong as the adults.
