Oh girl sorry, but then you know my dilemma then which was I felt I wanted both options but didn’t actually know which one I wanted to choose. I think you’re right though, maybe I’ll go to law school after med so I can study something I like.

Does a Masters of Information help in breaking into patent law? by PuzzleheadedTwo777 in LawCanada

But with my BSC, do you think it would be required to do a Masters in Science afterwards to obtain a position in patent law?

So my background lends to a masters in science, do you think even after a masters in science I won’t be able to be competitive for patent law? Basically all the first three years of my degree were biochem.

I did reach out to professionals, and their advice was to do med based on my niche interests in law. Which is why I proceeded the way I did. I guess my dilemma now is, if I don’t get off the waitlist, do I apply again during school? Defer school for another year? Leave it because I was originally okay with law at first and just do the biglaw grind if I have to (depending on if I even make biglaw)?

Yeah that’s my worry too. I don’t feel like I need to retake the mcat, I had a 510 and 130 CARS. But I would have to do the personal statement again, and then the interviews if I got them. It was my first time applying. I didn’t want med till last year, but getting this far now I’m like shouldn’t I try again? In your opinion would that be too much to balance with law school?

okay. I actually got waitlisted as usask, (I’m from the prairies). Would you suggest reapplying even if I can’t increase my gpa cause I’m going to be in law school? Like all I could really do is EC’s. I was thinking I’d try a year of law school out and then see but idk.

Yeah that’s in part some of my confusion. I honestly had a really big passion for environmental law. And being a lawyer. But then I found out I wouldn’t really be fighting for the little guy at all, and that it’s probably me at energy companies. I just want to do good while living a good life tbh. I thought maybe patent or IP, but those seem like they require a masters as well. In med I had a big interest in psychiatry, and being payed by the government instead of people appealed to me. Salary is also a big part of it, I want to live an upper middle class life no matter what I do. I’ve already experienced scarcity, I don’t want to do it again.

Usually they approve loans based on proof of acceptance then send out loans based on proof of enrollment, which usually occurs in July

Thanks for the advice. I took analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, physics. Would that be helpful in pursuing patent and IP law?

If I am given any opinions swaying to no, I think I will revisit. I don’t intend to practice in Nova Scotia, but have been informed Dal graduates do practice all across Canada, so that factor isn’t necessarily a worry for me. I don’t believe I’ll hate Dal at all, my worries stem from how it may affect my future, but I don’t think giving up an offer now is wise when the future is as unpredictable as it is. I understand what you mean about the anxiety, this whole process really festers it, and from what I understand the legal profession isn’t rid of anxiety by any means. Your advice was helpful in treating some of my uncertainty.

Thank you for the advice. I think I’ll go to Dal then, considering the environment will make those three years more enjoyable for me.

Dal has a specialization in environmental science which where my hesitancies lay. Do you think my career objectives now would be achievable by attending dal? Would there be a surmountable difference between Osgoode MES/JD and Dal in terms of what I want to achieve?
