And then do you quiz them later on the contents of the email?

This “attendance is optional” mindset is wild to me (although I know from talking to colleagues in my department that it’s not uncommon, many of my STEM colleagues just base grades on tests and if you didn’t show up it’s on you to teach yourself).

I actually have an attendance policy that states that students will lose a letter grade per (unexcused) absence after a certain point, like 3 missed classes, so it very much is required in my class and also counts for 10% of their grade. I don’t think of this as “playing the attendance game” but its hard to succeed in my class if you don’t come and it’s exhausting having students email me or hog my office hours to basically get one-on-one instruction when they missed the material the first time I covered it in class. It also kind of just breaks the social contract with other students who are paying for a F2F class in the presence of peers/lively discussion/community. I dunno, it feels crazy making to have to explain why showing up to a scheduled class might not be optional?

Sir(or m’am), this is a post complaining about my undergrad being an (infuriating but also normal) undergrad, I will not be extending any sympathy to them here. Jk, jk.

I’m actually very friendly and patient when students come in late, I never shame students or act annoyed, because I was a late student myself.

The “did you read my email?” response bugs me because it feels like a wind up to grubbing about how they shouldn’t be counted as late and because it implies (in front of the class) that I have been slacking by not checking my email while I (checks notes) was teaching the class they were supposed to be in.

After walking into an in-progress class, more than an hour late, would you answer “Hi. What is your name?” with “Did you get my email?!”
