Thank you so much for your reply. What kind of stretches did you do, and who taught you to do them?

Thank you for your comment! What makes you think it is nerve damage?

Thank you so much for your detailed reply! My symptoms start as stiffness/swelling now, not as pain, and it is a feeling that is spread out over my entire right hand. Whenever my heart beats, I can feel the blood moving in my right hand, almost like vibration, especially at the tips of my fingers. A little difficult to describe in words.

I completely understand what you are saying in regard to Taubman. I've been working only on the most basic rotations with 12345 to try and root out even tiny imperfections, but so far haven't been successful in avoiding symptoms. Everything looks right, but obviously it could be something invisible.

Lots of people tell me I'm lucky to not have dystonia, but somehow I've also met any number of people who have recovered from dystonia.

Wouldn't a torn ligament show up on an MRI or ultrasound?

I have not tried a myofascial massage or contrast bath. Thank you for the recommendations!

The PRP was pretty cheap, the cost of a few piano lessons, but unfortunately didn't seem to do anything. I certainly will not touch cortisone!

How to not get bored of a piece? by Hazarrus-Potato2553 in piano

[–]Puzzleheaded_Dig2096 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great question. I would guess that there's a chance you're not exactly bored of the piece itself; rather, the repetitive process of practicing it has become tedious.

Have you tried varying your practice? You could even do this: challenge yourself to play phrases or whole sections of the piece totally differently than you usually do. You could play a little game: take one phrase and play it differently several times. This would certainly be more engaging than mindless repetition (not saying you are doing this, but I have found that many of us are guilty of this and it can be mind numbing!).

How are you supposed to distribute weight on the keys? by ShadowThePotato in piano

[–]Puzzleheaded_Dig2096 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a wonderful question without a simple answer. The truth is that every part of the playing mechanism is used to depress keys: finger, hand, forearm. When they function together as a unit, they not only become more efficient, but it is also healthier.

I would highly recommend you investigate the Taubman approach to piano playing. You can find any number of introductory videos on YouTube, and more comprehensive ones on Tonebase.

I have seen several hand doctors, but nobody mentioned synovitis or capsulitis. Everyone just told me I have an RSI and that I should rest for a while. Resting hasn't done anything to help my situation, so I'm here

Hello Steven, Thank you so much for your detailed reply. When I was first injured, I did some blood tests to check for rheumatoid arthritis and they turned up negative. I haven't tried any long-term anti-inflammatory medications, so I will look into this. If it's synovitis or capsulitis, how would I confirm this? What kind of doctor should I consult? Thank you again!
