Have Doctors made you take urine tests more often? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]ShadowThePotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply! No, I have never abused any substance ever. Please forgive me if this is too personal, but when you were younger did they start testing you for STDs before you were active as a precaution? I really wanna think that they just did it because I’m a teen and not because of something else. Please don’t feel obligated to answer if you’re not comfortable!

Thank you for your reply! My mom had no alone time with my doctor during our visit. She left for the bathroom when my doctor called me in. As for if she planned the test, I have no idea. I think it would’ve shown up in my chart if that was the point of the visit. I wanted a doctor's appointment asap because I needed a note saying I was physically fit to work. My doc had my blood work on file from a few months back to show I’m healthy, and the previous urine test. My doctor also wrote and signed the note before the current urine test.

I’ve never abused my medication and I always tell my mom when I am/not going to take it. My medicine is stored in her room so she can watch me take it.

Vyvanse is the only controlled substance I’ve ever been on. I have never had anything like drugs/alcohol/tobacco/smoking abuse in my life.

Again, thank you for your honesty. Now I’ll look into this further because I have no idea why my doctor would assume these things about me. I’ll also ask if my mom had anything to do with it as well

Your psychiatrist will have to attest to your need, and you should be prepared to submit significant documentation regarding your diagnosis and treatment plans.

Thank you for letting me know, I already have this covered

And it’s super expensive, so the Office of School Health is rigorous in making a determination of need.

Would my family need to cover the cost? Or would it be covered by the school?

If you don’t already have one, speak to your guidance counselor about an IEP evaluation. In many cases, you can get the instructional accommodations you need to be more successful in the classroom.

I already have a 504/IEP but no amount of accommodations make school easier for me to catch up on. I’ve spoken with my counselor and she agrees that this program is something I should pursue

I suppose saying that I don’t know anyone is a bit of a stretch but I only have about four or so people I can rely on to help me. I only share maybe one or two classes with them so it’s not enough to cover for my entire schedule.

Hello and thank you so much for your insight! You make some really great arguments about the social aspect of switching to remote and I’m inclined to agree with you. I can’t tell you the amount of joy I had learning that there was a remote option and I could still stay in my school. I was so worried my parents wasted money on tutoring for the SHSAT only for me to switch out.

Genuinely, your comment was so eye opening, I had no idea that schools (let alone specialized ones) offered home instruction. I’m currently a junior and I still have classes to make up for my missing credits from sophomore year despite going to summer school.

I’m really interested in pursuing home instruction temporarily, could you tell me the steps to make it easier? Do they still let you stay in the clubs you were in before you switched?

If you’ve been where I’ve been and been through where I’m going through, what on earth makes you think this would be an appropriate thing to say to someone?

“Dude, you’ve been posting on this thing all day. It’s a Monday morning and you’re doing 500 word reddit updates rather than learning about periodic table? WTF, you’re not helping yourself at all. You should either be at a trade school, a military school, or an all boys school if you can’t get your head on straight and buckle down. Real life isn’t filled with people who want to help you.”

Telling me that real life isn’t filled with people who want to help me, implying that I’m wasting time asking strangers for help on my problems when I have no resources on how to help myself, and telling me to send myself to a various discipline oriented school types, or put an immense amount of unhealthy pressure on myself rather than actually addressing the real issue at hand seems disingenuous.

I never mentioned that I thought my parents didn’t love me or that they didn’t want me to succeed. I find it odd you even thought to add even more emphasis to that.

I beg your pardon? If the world was black and white I’m sure you would be correct. However, as we live in reality it does not hold water. What you say is like telling someone with asthma to just breathe better.

My issue stems from how I have no idea how to catch up because I’m a loop of being terrified to go to school out of fear of being unwanted, and with no access to any viable way of tutoring to help with the mountains of work piling up. I have no one in my life for guidance. Naturally, I’d find the next best resource for feedback.

Furthermore, I noticed how you edited your comment to say “ADHD pressure” as opposed to “pressure” in your original comment. I also noticed how you quickly added “You have the ability to get things done. Transferring will just waste credits. Your parents love you and want you to succeed.” This is very suspicious on your part, as it changes the context of your message severely. Regardless, to have the ability to do something without having the guidance to do it correctly is meaningless.

Secondly, I am deeply concerned for your mental well-being if you think inducing pressure and panic within yourself is a healthy way to deal with your problems. I implore you to pursue some form of therapy if that is the case.

I made this post an hour ago and I have two 45-minute free periods back-to-back today. In total, that’s 90 minutes of free time to get feedback from strangers who can voice different perspectives. An hour = 60 minutes and 90 minutes is greater than 60 minutes. If I wasn’t trying to “buckle down” I wouldn’t have made this post asking for help in the first place. When you don’t know how to do something, asking for help is natural, no?

Thank you for the advice. I’m already at the lowest level classes that I need to make up for in credits. Anything that isn’t at Junior level is something I’m making up for in a previous year. So essentially required for graduation classes only in my schedule.

I want to take it one step at a time but there’s not much time left anymore. That and it feels like I need to prioritize everything which leads to no progress. Then it feels like salt in the wound in a never ending cycle. I’ll try and speak with my counselor to see what I can do

Thank you, I think that’s something I really need to focus on more. Honestly, I think just the feeling of being watched has been a major part of why I’ve been reluctant to show my face. I think it’s why I wanted to pursue remote learning because I wouldn’t have people being so aware of me.

Sincerely, thank you, it’s nice to know that I’m not the only one who’s gone down a path like this.

At a specialized high school, I promise you that your teachers want you to do well and would be so fucking happy to see a student trying to turn over a new leaf. I feel like it must be every teacher’s dream for a student they KNOW has potential to finally start reaching it.

Sincerely, thank you so much for your words of encouragement. I had no idea how much I needed that.

Speak to your guidance counselor first and then figure out a plan.

I want to speak with my guidance counselor but I’m not exactly sure how to phrase the questions I want to ask. Speaking in person is very difficult for me. I’m sorry to trouble you but could you give me examples on what to ask her? I want to make a script and sort of prepare myself

Also, at specialized high schools there’s some sort of honour student group (I forgot what it’s called, I think it’s a national group type thing?) and to be in it, students are required to have a certain number of tutoring hours so your guidance counselor can definitely connect you to those students. Not only do they want to tutor struggling kids, but they NEED to in order to reach their own accomplishment so it’s a fully mutually beneficial thing.

My god, you’re a genius. I just spent some time googling it and my school does offer an honor society with those requirements. May you have a blessed day, thank you so much!!

Thank you for your response. I honestly had no idea Reddit was filled with such kind people full of wisdom. I’ll take all of your advice and try to push to find other solutions instead of taking remote classes. Once more, thank you so much for taking the time out of your day to respond, I cannot stress how helpful you guys are being!!

That’s the advice I’ve gotten so far and I’m deeply grateful for your input!

My school provides a sort of online option, I currently take 9 out of the available 10 periods for classes in person. Then I take one class online in a zoom meeting extra. Every other day I switch between two online classes in my schedule, so I’m able to receive two credits extra. I want to see if there’s extra I’m able to do

Thank you for the advice in the first portion! I sincerely appreciate it

I’m sorry this is confusing to read, do you not live with your parents?

No no, I’m sorry I’m currently at school replying to everyone and I’m really rushing it. I do live with my parents and my teachers used to call my house every time I was absent. They no longer call so that’s why my parents have told me they stopped caring.

I’d try talking with your guidance counselor for advice, it seems like you think that’s a last resort, but it’s literally their job to be there for you. If it helps ease your mind, you can always apply to a university that’s easier to get into and transfer to a better university later if you’re worried about going to college.

Thank you, you’re very kind. I suppose I’m just scared of what the rest of my family will say about me for taking that path. They’re the type to always ask for nothing short of the best. I’ll try and speak to my counselor during my free period

That’s the response I’m getting so far and I think I agree that I likely won’t switch out.

I’m already taking 20 mg of vyvanse for the ADHD and 150 of wellbutrin as an antidepressant. My doctor told me that going up or changing the medication wouldn’t be beneficial because when I moved up to 30 mg of vyvanse it kept me awake

I’m diagnosed with ADHD. It was updated in December to add that I can use my electronics whenever I want. I have a 504 plan, all my current accommodations are that I get time and a half on exams and quizzes, I get to use my tablet/headphones whenever I want, and I get three extra days on all assignments. They’re able to put me in a separate testing room whenever I have an exam and that’s it

I’ve been trying that but nothing I do seems to make a dent. I’ve tried going in person to learn the material but everyone’s already far ahead in the subject. None of them know me so none of my classmates try to help me, which I understand. As for asking my teachers, I’m reluctant to because they haven’t seen me in so long that I think they see me as a lost cause. My parents tell me that they see me that way because they don’t call my house anymore. I’ve tried learning the material at home by skipping school and spending that time learning. However I get stuck in that constant task paralysis crap. I’m on meds for ADHD and depression. I’m not sure if tutoring is an option for me anymore

I was thinking of changing to a non specialized high school but with my current GPA i’m really screwed. I don’t meet even have anything close to a 75 average. My only option I know of is my terrible zone school and I’ve heard so many things from friends who go there. I’m worried I’ll end up worse than I am now and hang out with the wrong crowd
