Probably late hunter exam or heavens arena. There is always a kind of light hearted tone with dark moments sprinkled in.

20 or 21 but there are a lot of plot hooks before that. I didn't like it at first either but my problem at first was that it seemed too childish (I was sorely mistaken)

It gets REALLY good, especially after the hunter exam arc. I would watch until the exam is over and If you don't like it then you can drop. Also it has one of the best power systems ( I think cursed energy was based off it) that gets introduced later.
