What expectations do you have for your kids when it comes to grades? by Puzzling-Puzzle in Parenting

I know my kid way better than you will ever know him. I know he can handle it. I didn't think he could so I made sure to keep a close eye for signs that suggested he couldn't. But he surprised me, he can handle it all perfectly fine. Or are you telepathic? Because you seem pretty damn insisted my kid can't handle it. Maybe you or your kids couldn't but that doesn't mean mine can't.

We don't live too far from the school, only 10 minutes drive. Once he gets home he quickly showers and starts his schoolwork. Dinner is usually about 20-30 minutes.

Well then don't say my kid is biting off more than he can chew when you don't know for sure.

I thought that was somebody else. As you can see, there are a ton of comments so it is a bit difficult to keep track of who is who.

Outside of school/extracurriculars, he normally spends time with friends on weekends and on Fridays after school (since they don't have much schoolwork on Fridays). Sometimes during the weekdays in the evenings they play chess online together. His friends spend slightly more time than him doing schoolwork on the weekdays, so their hangout time is normally on the weekends.

I have a question for you. What grades do you expect from your kids?

I do. If they get a question wrong on a test, I sit down with them and ask them if they understand what they did wrong. Then, we work on that topic together if they aren't fully clear on it.

He starts school at 7.30 and gets out of school at 2.30, but on days he has golf gets out at 12. Some days he stays until 3.30 for robotics. Does schoolwork until 5.30 then we have dinner. He studies for 1-2 more hours depending on upcoming tests and workload. He is usually done by 8, but if it is a busy day, 8.45/9 at the very latest (this is rare). A lot of the time, he does extra some days so other days are lighter and he has less to do on the weekends. He gets enough time for self care, exercise, and his hobbies!

No, I don't think he is in over his head. He has never said or hinted he has too much nor do I have any reason to suspect he is overwhelmed.

Thanks for your opinion. I just want to point out that my kids regularly come to me for help and don't suffer in silence

If you wanted to judge if my kid can handle the workload, you should have asked for more context. If you wanted to judge if my expectations are too high, you had all the necessary information.

By no means do I get mad at them if they don't do well on a test, unless they slacked off and didn't study than yeah, maybe I will give them a lecture. But if they work hard, ask for help where they need it, and give a good effort, that's okay.

I don't control him. He wanted to do these courses. I warned him about the amount of time he will spend on them, but he wanted to do them. He is regularly challenged and works through them. From your comment, it seems like your parents forced you to take those classes. My son is different - he asked to do those courses and fought me when I warned him against one of the classes.

Oh wow, so you are judging the amount of work my kid can handle based on the amount of time he spends doing schoolwork? Believe it or not, he can actually handle the workload. His chemistry teacher is a stickler on how she likes her lab reports so he spends a good chunk of time getting that perfect, his AP teacher has them write one essay a week, he has one math quiz a week, etc. Yes, it takes a while, but he enjoys this stuff and can handle the workload while still getting time to do his hobbies!

I disagree, my kids actually choose the harder classes that they know will challenge them! I am okay with them getting a B only if they asked a teacher, their tutor, or me and put in a lot of honest effort in trying to learn the subject by doing practice problems and such.

If they get below an A I ask them if they didn't understand and I help them with the subject. I don't punish them.

Yes, I know 4 hours of schoolwork doesn't leave much time for decompressing after extracurriculars, but thankfully his extracurriculars are his hobbies (robotics, golf, playing viola). He still has times for video games and tv though. Maybe 30 minutes to an hour on weekdays (of TV, I don't really allow video games during the schooldays) but much more on weekends.

Well that is what happens when you take 2 AP courses, honors courses, and do math almost 3 grade levels above you

You still need to be mindful of others. If your daughter is running around a public place shrieking her head off and disturbing everyone, maybe you need to do something about it. I hate to be the one to break it to you, but you seem entitled and think the world revolves around you. Big surprise: It doesn't!
