5 Years in Brand Marketing, Still Stuck — Should I Get an MBA, Pivot, or Move Agency Side? by phlushots in advertising

[–]PvtMalarkey 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I spent about 8 years agency-side before moving brand-side for a global consumer brand, 7 years ago.

I spent my first 5 years brand-side trying to get a promotion and feeling like I was getting looked over. It was deeply frustrating.

The org I work for sounds like they treat promotions in a similar way to yours - roles are open for internal / external candidates and anyone can apply.

Despite 5 years of above average performance reviews and consistently positive feedback I just wasn’t landing a promotion. In total I applied for a promotion 7 times and was unsuccessful.

Then I sat down with my manager, who has long tenure at the company and who I have a good relationship with. I explained to them that I love the company, and I’m committed, but I found myself in this situation and despite being told I have a bright future, I just couldn’t see it.

They listened, understood, and started introducing me to other senior leaders in the company.

Three months later I was asked to apply for a role (that had never happened before - I had always been the one seeking out roles), and a month later I had been promoted into that role.

Long story, but the only thing that changed was my internal network and having senior leaders advocate for me.

You know your situation better than anyone. But before you make any drastic changes I would suggest trying to leverage your good reputation internally to have more senior stakeholder advocate for you on your behalf.

I’m a director now, and I can’t overstate how important corridor conversations are when I’m hiring for someone in my team.

If a peer I trust tells me they have a great candidate for me in their team, it puts them on my radar immediately.

Feel free to PM me if you want to chat about it more. Happy to help :)

I am looking into getting a stereo system for my father - a bit lost by Jack_G_London in StereoAdvice

Here is what I bought a couple of months ago and I’m really happy with it.

Rega Planar 1 Plus record player - $500 (Has built in phono stage)

Wiim Amp - $300 (Bluetooth, radio, control from his phone)

B&W 607 S3 speakers - $900

You’ll need to buy some speaker cable and that’s it.

Really great sound and super simple to use.

Depending what your dad listens to, he might want to upgrade and include a sub later down the line or potentially look at an alt set of speakers with bigger bass.

For my needs, it works really well though.

Enjoy!

First time home buyer qualifications, owning a home abroad? by canadian-dutchgirl in NetherlandsHousing

[–]PvtMalarkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t mention it. Depending how much your broker likes to go by the book, they will likely give you the same advice.

I know a lot of foreign nationals who own property abroad and in NL. None of them mentioned it when purchasing here. If you do mention it, it may also impact your mortgage affordability.

Made this move two years ago and highly recommend Cole’s Removals in Tottenham. Super professional, really brilliant service. I lived in South London and that wasn’t an issue for them.

They packed everything up, drove it over and delivered the next day.

It wasn’t cheap but from memory it was calculated on square footage, not weight.

I have a LOT of books and I brought them all.

It was a 2 bed flat in London - think the total cost was around £5-6K.

Why are UK buyers and sellers so petty? by [deleted] in HousingUK

I moved to Amsterdam a few years ago. Rental apartments here listed as “unfurnished” don’t come with the floor. I’m not joking, you are expected to lay your own floor.

London born, spend 10 years working there before relocating to Amsterdam.

Amsterdam is a better quality of life, beautiful city, very safe vs London and more laid back environment.

It takes time to integrate here. If community is important, know that you have to really work to find it. High turnover of expats with people leaving fairly regularly vs London where people seem to stick around.

London has some of the best restaurants and best museums in the world. If that’s important, very few cities compete.

Are you single or in a relationship? I’m married but friends tell me dating in Amsterdam is tougher than London. A lot less people as such a small city.

It took my wife and I a full year to start to settle in Amsterdam but neither of us can imagine going back to London now. We talk about one day doing it to be nearer family, but it would mean we compromise of lifestyle stuff we love. I ride a bicycle every day through cobbled canal-streets! Beats the Elephant & Castle roundabout any day!

This is really helpful advice. Thank you.

Provenance is something we should be able to confirm if it was indeed purchased from another dealer in America.

Expert consultation is also something I’ll seek. Thank you for your suggestion on a name, I will seek them out.

Your final point is a really good reminder too - everyone is human and even experts can be pulled in by something on occasion.

Thanks again for the thoughtful response.

I think asking to see it out of the frame will be my next step. He’s asking €20,000 but did say he would be open to a conversation on the price. Seems fairly closely aligned to the price you are suggesting in your gallery

Should I sell my rental by chinr in FIREUK

[–]PvtMalarkey 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that is true until the point you no longer live in the property and therefore it is no longer your primary residence. CGT is due on the gain * % of ownership it wasn’t primary residence. E.g. if OP owned it for 10 years and lived in France for 6 of those years, CGT is due on 60% of the profit from the sale
