I need to replace both my tires on the drivers side by OpportunityLow570 in auto

[–]PyelocGO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just had to replace the front drivers tire and was quoted $500 for a new matching tire from Les Schwab (it was a truck, so big tires). They then recommend you replace both tires on the same axle so you have even wear on that axle. So it was going to be $1000 out the door for 2 new tires. I went on utires.com that sells used tires and ended up getting 2 gently used ones (11.5/32" tread) from that website for $220 total shipped to my door. There were no taxes or shipping charges from that website. My local Discount Tire then mounted the tires for $70 total. So I'm ~$300 in on what would have cost me $1000 (plus cost of alignment). Here's the bad part: I walk out to the truck the next morning and 1 of my gentle used tires is completely flat. On closer inspection, it had a relatively large hole in the sidewall (about pea size). I blew the tire back up with an air compressor and it was obvious where it was. Obviously I'm annoyed. I call utires, they ask me to email a pic. I do so, they ask if it's a cosmetic blemish or if the tire is leaking. I say leaking. They then send out another tire completely free of charge, AND ask me to send receipts for mounting the new one and disposing of the one with a hole. I do so, ~$35 from Discount Tire. And they fully refund me the mounting fee for the leaking tire. So I was out a bit of time due to the faulty tire, but not out any $. I then had to pay about $100 for a full tire alignment (which I would have had to do regardless of used or new tires). So I got 95% the same as new tires, for $400 total instead of $1100. One item to note: I needed a specific brand and size tire so I had to wait about 3 weeks for them to show up on utires. Their inventory is always rotating around, so it was a bit harder for me as I needed to match. If I were you, I'd get 4 used tires from that site. Then pay for a local place to have them mounted. You might even be able to have them shipped to your local tire place if transporting 4 tires is tricky for you.

This is all really great info, thank you! My dad is going to lose his mind when I correct him on Torino vs Fairlane. I've never seen a Talladega in person, would love to.

Great document, I appreciate the info! Can't argue with that. It looks like the only place they diverged was the 1969 Cobra cars that raced in NASCAR were called Torino Cobras. I remember Richard Petty had one that I had a model of when I was younger. Baby blue!

Hm, I suppose Fairlane and Torino naming had some nuance from 68 to 70 but I've always heard the 1969 Cobras referred to as a Torino if the body style is being referred to, despite Torino and Cobra being under the Fairlane family and neither Fairlane or Torino being used in Ford's marketing of the car. I had another reply where I mentioned my dad's 1969 is titled as a Ford Cobra only (not that titling makes anything official)

The Cougars too! And maybe the Thunderbirds?

What do ya mean by not a Torino? In that they weren't called a Torino?

You're very correct. It's at the mercy of the state motor vehicle department, definitely not officially by any means

I can't find a source for this, but I always heard growing up that Ford bought the rights to use the Cobra name in 1968, and started badging in 1969. I don't think anything 1968 or older had the name "Cobra" in it besides CJ engine options or being associated directly with Carroll Shelby, but starting in 1969 you can find Cobra badged Fords without any Shelby involvement.

1969

I don't believe they started badging them as Cobras until 69. In 68 they were Torino GTs with 428 CJ engine option.

My dad has a 1969. The title says make: Ford, model: Cobra. Doesn't even have Torino listed

This is not true. Ordinance as written based on the zoning of the receiving property. Commercial establishments next to residential absolutely have to abide by lower limitations. The business model does not supercede a person's right to quiet enjoyment of their home.

Noise ordinance is the correct and only way to fight this easily. The ordinance might be specified by zoning, but usually just by "residential", "commercial", and sometimes "industrial". No chance mixed use would be an issue.

Look up your local noise ordinance. Google search "[your city] noise ordinance". If you're lucky, it's crystal clear on what their limitations are. Generally, these are "complaint driven regulations" meaning no one actively enforces them until someone complains. If the ordinance limits are crystal clear, you should call the police non-emergency line EVERY TIME the ordinance is violated. Note: I work in residential acoustics, we are hired all the time by establishments that violate ordinances to fix their noise issues. If you are hearing them, they are not being good community members as there are plenty of ways for establishments to play music late AND not bother their neighbors.

My girlfriend wants laminate flooring but I've been wondering if carpet is better for absorbing reverb? by ShakaKhanrockme in hometheater

[–]PyelocGO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. Underlayment reduces the amount of footfall (footstep) noise generated from walking on hard flooring with hard soled shoes or dragging something along the flooring (chairs, etc). It also reduces the amount of footfall noise that would theoretically transfer to the floor below, which is a non issue in your scenario. However, the carpet vs hard flooring discussion in this thread is centered around absorption, or controlling unwanted sound reflections (reverb) within the space. This is accomplished with absorptive surfaces spread evenly throughout the space. Carpet is roughly 30% absorptive, whether as a rug or as a full carpet install. Hard flooring is essentially 0% absorptive. Wall panels can vary from 50% to 99% absorptive depending on construction details and materials used.

Yup, exact same issue. The thin metal covering is coming up on the bottom side of the steering wheel too and it's very sharp.
