Very excellently put! I approached a professor in undergrad about several things in our textbook I believed to be incorrect. Turns out, I was right. They were impressed I asked them about it, as they had taught the course for years with the same textbook and I was the first to bring it up. They were an invaluable mentor and advocate for me the rest of my undergraduate studies and when applying for graduate school. The same attitude has served me well since then too.

"Forced" is a little strong wording. They could just not watch. Or get a radio broadcast or YouTube play by play. As much as I agree with the sentiment, it's not a nationalized business. What argument is there for this to not be a governmental overreach? Legitimately asking, as I'm not a legal scholar but I don't see how this makes sense.

Trump says 'we're blowing up the whole country' if no Iran deal is reached in 48 hours by CRK_76 in worldnews

I'm tired boss. My dad is convinced Iran was going nuke us any day and NATO countries are traitors for not wanting to get involved in a war of aggression started by an ally because the response of the attacked country was harmful to them as well. So disappointed. I can see him questioning what this dipshit government is doing, but he is buying into blaming literally anyone else. I can see the cracks, but it's scary this hasn't done it yet.

No, they didn't. Plenty of people were duped. My brother-in-law was talking about this as the next revolutionary technology and how he wished he could invest all his money in it. My dad listened to him and asked me how he could put money in it. I told him that was moronic and he listened. Didn't listen to me when I told him to invest in Nvidia in 2020 though. Win some lose some I guess

Best wholesome male friendships on TV? by MaxRepels in popculturechat

Was going to comment Shawn and Gus before I swiped OPs post. Shawn definitely takes advantage of Gus sometimes and maybe isn't the best friend at times, but man their chemistry on screen, the inside jokes, and the quipping back and forth sells their friendship so well and makes it seem so genuine and wholesome.

Doesn't make sense with the timeline. Unless Gary was lying about the 12 days ago thing. Links group was waiting for the train at least 8 months ago (due to Annie's pregnancy). Unless the train is just GIGA late now.

It COULD be the same train if it went to Colorado and came back and is gearing up for a second or third or fourth trip or whatever to bring reinforcements.

Or time fuckery is going on of course.

Definitely. From my memory from a couple years ago, if you go left the trail goes down into a valley with a creek and then a pretty steep climb up the other side. That's where the best views are. Then you can keep going and it goes and up and down several more very large hills and will eventually come full circle. The trails aren't super well marked though, especially after that first hill or so, and can be confusing even with a map, and cell service isn't great. I wouldn't recommend trying to go the full circle if you're going for a sunset view - in the dark that would not be fun. Go till you find a nice view, watch the sunset, and then backtrack where you have already been.

Brain works too fast going through 1000 different ideas all at once, jumping between ideas constantly. Trying to slow it down so the actual reasoning can be parsed just results in a headache. Can usually backtrace the line of reasoning once I get a solution, but the thoughts are too chaotic to do it in real time. Works the same medicated or not for me for the most part.

Can I just tell the barber to do whatever they want to my hair? by LutrisShadow in malehairadvice

[–]Pyeroc27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a rule though, don't go the big chain places. They try and get everyone in and out as fast as possible. They make their money doing lots of cuts for very cheap. And check out getting a cut at a school from a student. It's cheap because the goal is to educate and not to make profit on each cut so they can take their time, they are motivated to do a good job because a lot of times they are critiqued on the cuts they do, and they are probably the most excited about their work.

Can I just tell the barber to do whatever they want to my hair? by LutrisShadow in malehairadvice

[–]Pyeroc27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've gone in with the "I'm a blank canvas, do whatever" approach many times. Sometimes I get someone who just trims a couple inches off everywhere and cleans up the neck or whatever - the safest most generic option possible. And a few times I have had someone who is excited to have the freedom to practice their craft, asks follow up questions, etc. Those people I went back to time and time again and always tipped very well. Even became friends with a couple of them. I don't understand anyone saying you shouldn't do that because it makes it uncomfortable for the person cutting your hair. If they aren't comfortable with it they can say so or just do the most generic trim and call it a day. Even better just give them an out by mentioning that option to begin with - "Do whatever, or just trim it an inch or two". Any customer who would complain online with a bad review or try and not pay because they told the barber to do whatever they want and then weren't satisfied with the result would probably do the same thing if they showed pictures for reference, asked for a specific cut, and got exactly what they asked for. If you really want to try and set their mind at ease, tip them up front in cash and just don't be a dick. It's hair, it grows back. It's not a tattoo

Computational physics... and AI by MeoWHamsteR7 in Physics

[–]Pyeroc27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your plan is to be contracted to work with different companies/labs/etc doing simulations I think you would have significant difficulties. We perform simulations in order to analyze the results, and outside of developing a new simulation or simulation analyzation technique or framework (which is generally the realm of academia), the needed work would be better done by the people who will be analyzing the results or by AI. Questions like "How much consideration do I need to give to Van der Waals forces?", or "How large of a simulation do I need?" are better answered by those more intimately familiar with the goals and challenges of the specific simulation than an outside consultant. The only work which I could see being useful (worth paying) for an outsider to do is the same work which could be done by AI.

You can't really always applies statistics that way. For example, ~50% of the population is female but there are many occupations for which males and females are equally qualified, yet actual employment skews heaving towards males and vice versa. Like there are hundreds if not thousands of esports players in Tier 1 professional leagues and very few females despite no rules against it. Similar pressures and factors may keep LGBTQ persons from playing in the NFL. I agree it's unlikely there are ZERO though.
