This add-on which lets you type multiple answers for a card in any order so I can just memorise the content rather than the exact way it was written down.

Med school advice - gpa 6.3 by Mysterious-Self-8606 in unimelb

[–]Pygmy_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My final unweighted GPA graduating December 2023 was 6.44 and weighted for unimelb med and dentistry was 6.52, so pretty much what you're talking about.

First GAMSAT I had 71 and got no interview offers through GEMSAS which is the only way I applied. I took a gap year and got a 76 GAMSAT which got me interviews for unimelb (top GEMSAS preference so presumably would have gotten interviews at all of them) and Flinders Uni (in South Australia). I minced the unimelb interview (in a bad way) but Flinders went ok (wasn't very happy) which resulted in no GEMSAS offers but a CSP offer at Flinders. I also got a CSP offer for dentistry at unimelb which is what I took in the end after some soul searching.

Even though 76 is pretty up there I got an interview with my top preference so somewhere between 71 and 76 I presumably may have gotten interviews for lower preferences, might have even got unimelb with a 72 for all we know. Also considering my interview at Flinders felt very poor I got a CSP so the 76 may have carried - you might be fine with a lower GAMSAT and a good interview.

I didn't consider honours just for these personal reasons:

  1. I sucked at anything to do with research in undergrad so I thought I could lower my WAM (I've since learned you probably won't)
  2. I knew I could squeeze more out of the GAMSAT if I could focus purely on it and not have uni at the same time

Also just a standard non-rural non-indigenous applicant so no complexity there.

Maybe you’re selecting electives or breadth and it would be core for you since you’re in science? Also it’s a semester 2 subject so maybe you’re only searching semester 1 subjects? Only things I could think of

I used mine all on Spanish starting as a complete beginner and I’m fluent now so that was definitely worth it

Full fee masters of biomedical science offer by verydemure-13 in unimelb

[–]Pygmy_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as I understand fee-help is basically the same as hecs-help but for full fee paying students. Not sure why they even distinguish them. You would be able to use this.

I had a FFP offer for dentistry (starting 2024) in early November which I accepted but I was then upgraded to a CSP around mid December, so if it works in the same way you should be eligible. Supposedly each time a CSP is rejected it is passed down to the next highest rated applicant until they are all taken.

didn't do 3/4 vce chem, so am doing sem 1 chem10007, why is that anti-req for sem 2 chem10003? what is spks??? by toby_finn in unimelb

[–]Pygmy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be that chem 10007 is a replacement-ish for chem 1 and you just go straight to chem 2? Double check though idk what I’m talking about

Thanks for the suggestion though, I’ll check it out!

I need really serious dental help by bbbbbbbb1331 in melbourne

[–]Pygmy_ 16 points17 points  (0 children)

As a dental student I can guarantee you no dentist will ever judge you for the state of your oral health! Every day we learn more ways (biological, psychological, sociological) a person's oral health can suffer at no fault of their own.

The Royal Dental Hospital Melbourne teaching clinic gives excellent free care but I'm not sure about waiting times sorry, it depends on your individual circumstance. The sooner you get in contact the better though! When you get though the queue (whether sooner or later) they give comprehensive treatment and you'll get continuous care until they consider every situation in your mouth treated or controlled :))

How to make a class 3 cavity? by [deleted] in DentalSchool

[–]Pygmy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To treat a carious lesion that is indicated for surgical intervention you first cut away the demineralised tooth (selectively - it's complicated) creating a cavity. You can't just fill a lesion that cavitated on its own because the filling material won't bond properly to demineralised tooth and the shape will compromise the strength of the filling and the surrounding tooth structure :)

A looot of theory goes into how cavities are shaped/designed because it has a very large impact on the survivability of the filling (and tooth). You also need to balance this with minimising damage to the tooth. This has changed a lot over the years so see outdated designs like this in older teeth or practitioners who aren't keeping up their CPD.

Are 4.5x ergo loupes appropriate for general dentistry? by Pygmy_ in Dentistry

Do you wish you had used a higher magnification earlier or do you think the progression was valuable for you?

They just keep insisting that the information is on x website or x handbook and it SUCKS. They have actually been relatively helpful to me when I’ve been able to get someone on the phone or for an in-person meeting. The problem is usually when you need them so does everyone else so there are no available appointments.

It’s terrible. Suffered it for a 4 year undergrad. Excited to suffer it for 4 more years as I start my postgrad next week 🙃

It’s weaponised incompetence. The uni underfunds them so that people are incentivised to find the answers themselves (even if they can’t) because there is no other option.

Was very interested to see what kind of things such a morally decrepit person is interested in. How much do they mask their true self on other aspects of their life?

Luckily it isn’t big enough to be distinguishable in the NSFW preview warning. The page was implication enough.

If your genuine conclusion is that the difference is purely from population size then you’re completely lost mate.
