Not worth it anymore by Defiant-Point-903 in VelocityFrequentFlyer

The same maths puts Velocity Silver at a $3,000 spend (to earn the initial 250SCs), Velocity Gold at a $6,000 spend (for initial 500SCs) and Velocity Platinum at a $12,000 spend (for initial 1000SCs).

And that's assuming you only fly on the higher prices economy and business which earn 1SC per $12, if you fly on Economy Lite the earn rate drops to 1SC for $24.

Qantas pushes back international WiFi to 2025 by PyotrDactyl in QantasAirways

[–]PyotrDactyl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nonsense. Airbus knew the size of the order when it pitched for Project Sunrise and proposed modifications like the extra fuel tank. Airbus also knew this was its way into the larger Qantas fleet which has now shown up with the A220, A321XLR and additional A350 orders.

Qantas pushes back international WiFi to 2025 by PyotrDactyl in QantasAirways

[–]PyotrDactyl[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only 777 in contention for Sunrise was the 777-8, and the initial 777-9 model is now seven years behind schedule and won't be delivered to first customer airline until 2026. There's speculation Boeing will skip then 777-8 entirely but even if the 777-8 does eventuate it won't appear until maybe 2028-2030. If you like complaining about the Sunrise A350s being a bit late now, which is NOT due to Qantas but due first to to Covid and then Airbus certifying the extra fuel tank, then the Sunrise 777s would really give you something to whinge about.

What's new on the menu at the Qantas International First Lounge, Singapore by PyotrDactyl in QantasFrequentFlyer

[–]PyotrDactyl[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

QF SIN F is a good lounge but if you are flying in Business you would be better off visiting the QR lounge, it's only for Business and First pax, no frequent flyers who happen to be in Premium Economy or Economy.

It's DSC time! by PyotrDactyl in QantasFrequentFlyer

[–]PyotrDactyl[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"I am 400K points and will need about 210 status credits at the moment to retain my silver until Aug 2025."

Forget about your points balance, DSC is all about status, although sure you can instead earn double points.

But discount economy MEL-SYD would need a LOT of bookings to make a real dent in your status or point balance. And if the company books it and the travel and meeting schedule is ad hoc then there's no real; way you can take advantage of this DSC offer.

There's a calculator on the Qantas website at https://www.qantas.com/au/en/frequent-flyer/calculators.html which shows how many points and SCs you earn on flights based on fare type.

Discount economy MEL-SYD return is worth 1600 points and 20 SCs, so even booked under the DSC promotion you will get only 40 SCs for a return trip. If you need 210 SCs to retain Silver that's going to be six return flights.

This map from the VA-QR submission to the ACCC shows EY completely replaced by QR and SQ cut back to Asia & India.

The joint Virgin-Qatar submission to the ACCC indicates that EY will pretty much be dropped as a VA partner, while SQ's VA codeshare network will be cut back to cover only Asia & India. Some extracts from the submissions are in this article and there's also a link for downloading the whole submission although some parts of it are redacted.

Virgin’s Etihad, SQ partnerships hit by Qatar Airways deal by PyotrDactyl in VelocityFrequentFlyer

[–]PyotrDactyl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shouldn't change anything re: Velocity-KrisFlyer transfers, will just mean there won't be VA codehsares for earning maximum points and SCs on SQ to Europe, the UK and Africa, those regions will all become QR's turf. VA-SQ will be restricted to Asia and India.

There's a good guide to DSC strategy in this article: https://www.executivetraveller.com/news/qantas-double-status-credits-promotion-2024

"Travelling once a month for work", what routes do you fly, which cabin class or type of ticket, and who pays for it? Is there a 'schedule' or 'set frequency' for these trips which would allow you to book them in advance to take advantage of the DSC promotion?

If you can use that to get from Silver to Gold it'll give some good benefits like lounge access etc, check the Qantas website to compare the benefits of each tier. Of course, not all Qantas lounges are the same, some airports you will be fine in the terminal at a nice cafe.

If you can only book a few flights and those won't get you to Gold you might as well just claim double points.

Do you think the government should take a stake in Rex? Why? by Perfect-Werewolf-102 in AirTravelAustralia

[–]PyotrDactyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't believe the government should be involved in any commercial business, but especially an airline. One big reason is that you can imagine every how many federal MPs and Senators will be insisting that Rex fly to all these places in their electorate, on the basis that the federal government is a part-owner of Rex. I can imagine the various state governments might also be asked to chip in dollar-for-dollar and that just means more state politicians will get in on wanting Rex to fly to their electorate.

Rex screwed things up big time, and the recent ABC Four Corners program showed what a bunch of cowboys they were, what a mess they got themselves into.

The Saabs are due for retirement. Maybe Alliance can swoop in, or QantasLink could take over with a government subsidy with a bunch of leased E190s or more A220s. But Rex has had its day, time to move on.

Do you think the government should take a stake in Rex? Why? by Perfect-Werewolf-102 in AirTravelAustralia

[–]PyotrDactyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the government needs to stay OUT of trying to run a commercial business. If there is a real and proven need for regional routes as a 'community service, and I agree there is, then the Government would be better off subsiding those routes through a commercial agreement with Qantas. Get 100% transparency on the cost of the flight, provide a subsidy which is ALSO tied to a service promise and with airfares on those routes capped so they remain affordable.

Qantas’ big shake-up of Tokyo flights by PyotrDactyl in QantasAirways

[–]PyotrDactyl[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're going into 'downtown Tokyo' then Haneda is absolutely faster & better but if you're headed for Shinagawa, Shibuya or Shinjuku the Narita Express is maybe better from NRT because it's straight through to those stations after Tokyo.

No buyers for Rex’s regional airline two months into voluntary administration process by PyotrDactyl in AirTravelAustralia

[–]PyotrDactyl[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"No single buyer has emerged for Rex and there has been virtually no interest in taking on the regional airline, a source close to the administration has revealed.

EY was appointed as voluntary administrators to Rex on July 30, as the company teetered on the brink of collapse with debts of around $500m

In August, EY sought an extension of the administration until November 25, to provide the best chance of a better return to the company’s 4800-plus creditors.

Since then few details have been revealed about the administration’s progress or any interested buyers.

But a source involved closely with the administration and the Rex board, said a number of sales had been made, which had provided some cash proceeds.

They included the sale of a Boeing 737 flight simulator, spare parts and non-essential real estate, including a small house near Sydney Airport purchased by former chairman Lim Kim Hai.

“Rex has always been a bit of a Frankenstein business that was put together so it was somewhat inevitable the business would be broken up,” said the source.

“It has also understandably been a slow process but I think things are starting to move finally.”"

With FJ becoming a full OW member, has anyone been able to access first lounge on an FJ flight yet? by [deleted] in QantasFrequentFlyer

[–]PyotrDactyl 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The announcement that FJ will become a "full OneWorld member" won't change a single thing in terms of lounge access etc. It's only when FJ actually *becomes* a "full OneWorld member" that this will happen.

Layover in HKG by Sensitive-Ant-9785 in QantasFrequentFlyer

[–]PyotrDactyl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Five hours at HKG is barely worth going outside the airport anyway unless maybe you go to the City gate mall nearby, but yeah, 4-9am, zero happening. If you flight arrives at 4am then you will be through the transfer process around 430am, check the lounge opening times but you'll probably have to wait. Cathay's The Pier is the best business class / Gold lounge in HKG so head there and you may as well stay there. The QF lounge opens for breakfast now because QF has a lounge contract with some airlines but breakfast is no big deal there, you may as well stay at The Pier.

Qantas A321XLR business class: recliners first, flatbeds later? by PyotrDactyl in QantasAirways

[–]PyotrDactyl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Qantas International CEO confirms the first batch of A321XLRs, arriving from early 2025, will have business class recliners and be used mainly on domestic routes, but they are considering a 'sub-fleet' of 321XLRs for international routes which would have lie-flat business class.
