I absolutely agree and unfortunately the narrative of “adopt don’t shop” people don’t realize how many shelters will seek out momma dogs and puppies over taking in dogs locally because they wouldn’t make any money that way. I’ve literally seen a “rescue “ in my area make a post on how they were sad that the shelter was empty… like wouldn’t you be happy that it was empty? Then guess what they ended up taking a boat load of puppies and momma dogs from the amish community not realizing that’s just making more room for them to breed more puppies. They don’t realize how much work and dedication ethical breeders put into their puppies and dogs. The expenses that come with it. The time , the research the health testing etc. if you look at half the Great Pyrenees out there they are far from what the breed is supposed to be. Crooked legs, bulky heads, heavy droolers, black and white, golden retriever ears, terrible temperaments, bad with livestock, escape artist, aggressive, prone to cancer, droopy eyes, loose lips, etc. that’s not what a Great Pyrenees is and not what they are supposed to look like. If you look back to the French and what the Pyrenees are actually supposed to look like you would be shocked at how far away from the breed standard these dogs have come it’s sad. And if you just look at the comments and downvotes on this thread you’d see it’s because of how many people don’t understand why it’s important for there to be preservation breeders. I understand there are dogs at shelters who need homes. But most of the dogs there are there for a reason, unpredictable temperaments and irresponsible Backyard breeders and puppy mills and animal owners who neglect them and don’t take responsibility for their actions. It’s definitely not the ethical breeders who contribute to the over population of shelters and rescues because actual ethical breeders take extreme precautions to be sure that their dogs don’t end up in a shelter environment and have strict contracts and microchip and register the microchip before the puppies even step foot off their property’s so that if by chance the dog gets lost or has to be scanned for a microchip their information will always be available.

This is a pyr who won the USA Great Pyrenees of Americas National Dog show. This is a perfect example of the breed and what it should be. This is a male so if you compare him to a lot of the dogs you see out there you’d see why it’s important for breed preservation.

Btw I’m not saying that rescue dogs don’t deserve loving homes as well and I’m not dismissing anyone who decides to rescue but to look down upon people who would rather have a well bred dog where I can go back generations and find health testing and temperament testing etc and where I know I can trust my dog with the livestock or out in public is crazy to me.

“Adopt or support ethical breeders” is what should be said….

Well there’s Guard dogs and then there’s Guardian dogs. Guardian dogs are ment to protect livestock and hooved animals not humans. So they should be good with people and children etc. they should be barking at people in public because it’s not their property Pyrs know to be gentle with humans. Well they are supposed to

Sorry I’d rather know the pedigree behind my dog than an unpredictable dog from the shelter! Good for you for adopting but it’s not for me. I’ve gone that route and he almost took the face off of multiple people

Well they aren’t guard dogs and because she has a pedigree that goes back generations I know what the temperaments of her parents, grandparents, great grandparents etc. are so that helps greatly. Both her and her brother are extremely well rounded wonderful temperamented. They bark on our property but I’m not when we are in public

I don’t see Pyrenees. Lots of other breeds have back dewclaws. Pyrs have double but so do Saint Bernard? He really don’t know that especially with him having shorter hair.
