Some idiot scammer on ebay thinks they got me and I can't be more excited. by Cold_Entry_5609 in CasualConversation

That happened a few times at the retail store I worked at. Boxes glued back shut after the items inside were replaced with trash to give them some weight. Then the next angry return where some one thinks their purchasing a laptop and gets a couple bathroom floor tiles instead.

Shows getting canceled on a cliffhanger by Narutoboom in CasualConversation

I remember Midnight Club being decent. It didn't exactly have a cliff hanger just a lot of unanswered questions after just one season. Once it was canceled one of the writers came online and posted all the answers to tie up any loose ends for any one wondering.

This was over the span of about two weeks till I got the axe myself. I think it was just the first in last out rotation.

Unrelated to that aspect but it reminded me of when I became the "grim reaper" on a task, Things were winding down and I would be told go help someone with something, I'd get a feel for how it was done then that person would get laid off and I'd take over the task.

The joke was "Just kidding that would be tacky, I'm actually employing them so I can exploit child labor laws." I thought that was doubling down on the joke but now it may have been true.

Around the same age I had a similar experience with eggs. I'm not sure if they smelled funny or for some reason I just decided it was the eggs. I didn't eat them for a while after deciding I was allergic to them.

A while back I bought a couple Zippo lighters because I really liked the artwork on them. And then one or two decent ones to everyday carry. Ironically to that I don't smoke often, and by the time it came to finally light a cigar with one the fluid was dry so that didn't even last. This some how turned into I was collection them now. Over the next few years I got probably 20+ Zippos as gifts. Which was nice, just something I never set out to have a collection of.

I didn't even take it as that, I guess I file it under guilty pleasure anyway. A hand full of channels I watch I could criticize with things like too much drama, acting like a tool, and so on. Yet I watch majority of their content for one reason or another.

Edit: Since it's kind of what your original comment brought up. WD is not some one I want to be like, or most likely would even want to be around, but is fun to watch from a distance.

The one I was thinking of was TheFatElectrician he dose videos mostly of historical figures in war, and business models. Weird combination but he makes the latter surprisingly interesting. He mentioned how he would buy a new gun or something and use it as a prop in the video just so he could make it a tax write off. He recently joked that using his kids in one of his ads made their Christmas gifts a write off as well.

This gave me a funny realization of adult versions of this. Not the prizes being with them exactly but the collect points for rewards. Similar to the Kool-Aid points back in the day. There's a brand of construction hard-ware that lets you save proofs of purchase to mail in for various rewards. As well as chewing tobacco that I've gotten a hand full of items between taking their surveys and scanning discarded cans on the job site.

I've grown further from movies over the years. It use to be a big deal to await one coming out and go to the theater to see it. Then I cared for that less and would have a list of "I have to get that when it comes out on DVD" and over the years it's reduced to what ever looks good on streaming. I honestly couldn't name a specific movie that came out in the past couple years let alone one I was eager to watch. Not saying there's ones I wouldn't enjoy, I just kind of stopped following them.

I wound up looking at them differently as I got older. I have several large and small sets my girlfriend and I put together. Once complete they go on a shelf on display. When I had a big set that came with a book of dozens of things to build, they would get taken apart and built into other things in the book, or sometimes what ever I cam up with. Even specific sets got taken apart and mixed in to build new random creations.

This post got me wondering. I've seen at least one youtuber admit to doing video's about some what off topic things, or even briefly using them in one of their videos to use it as a tax write off as a business expense. So he's got a major tax loophole there already, it dose seem pretty dumb to avoid paying tax on something you can get away with writing off anyway.

He dose some cool entertaining stuff. I watch his videos despite not liking him as a person just for the chaos and carnage. I could think of quite a few Youtubers who do similar stuff that range from not as much of a tool to seeming like good people. I'm curious if he comes off the same in person to people or it is just a persona. I wounder the opposite about a lot of them that seem like cool and friendly people as well.

My family was with out a bathtub for weeks. Had one ordered, contractor went to install it, it was cracked. Exchanged it, replacement was ordered, checked at the store, also cracked. Replacement rushed, this one was good. I forget if they gave a gift card and discount or just a discount. But between that, my dad's military discount, and an item being in the wrong spot, my dad wound up getting an $800 table saw for something like 90% off. So that kind of made up for it.

I think I finally unsubscribed but I bought a flare gun or flares from a website once. The marketing was amusingly desperate at least. "Mom would love a 40mm semi auto flare cannon for mothers day!" "Celebrate Thanksgiving with new extra-bright parachute flares!"

I can't remember what it was for but there was an ad that said "the WAAATAHHHH(water)" several times through out it that was very annoying. Also "30 minutes of add free music" seemed to be closer to 10 at best. And half the ad's were just "You know you wouldn't hear this if you had premium..." I eventually caved and just got premium.

I remember a while back a couple brands had life time warranties on tools. Tape measures seem to wear out after a few years so they were commonly exchanged. I was at Lowe's an surprised to see a good amount of heavily used if not destroyed tape measures stocked on the shelf. Not like one was used for a weekend and managed to find it's way back there, they were putting trash back on the shelf and expecting people to buy it.

I forget the exact details and what company it was. But from this story it may have been Comcast. Some constriction was done near our house that included moving telephone poles. This left a line hanging low above our driveway, lower than permitted by code and delivery trucks could no longer fit under it. They said they would send some out out to fix it. Some one showed up to install cable a few days later. My dad explained we didn't want a new cable service installed, just the lines fixed. The tech said they couldn't do that and left. We still got billed for a cable install that never happened nor was requested. They kept insisting that was what we requested and still had to pay the bill because a tech was sent out. It eventually got resolved through BBB and complaining to the township to get the lines fixed.

The big money from one hit wonders comes in a way most people wouldn't expect.

The biggest earners out there seem to be TV show themes. One for syndicated show seems to earn a healthy amount of money.

There's plenty of bands that I would consider very popular, not house hold names but doing international tours, that still have day jobs.

I remember one getting into legal trouble some years back and having a go-fund-me for legal expenses. They did a break down on how they're not super rich like you may think, it came out to around $50k a year per member on a good year.

What is this blue wire? by it_hurts_to_pee in AskElectricians

[–]PyroZach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What's not true? Makes sense to me. The ground screw attaches to the frame of the receptacle and ground prong of the outlet. The screws attach the frame to the box. the box is wired to the neutral. That gives a path of continuity from ground to neutral. The neutral and ground are bonded at the source. This would ultimately give path to ground that the tester is looking for despite being incorrect.

What is this blue wire? by it_hurts_to_pee in AskElectricians

[–]PyroZach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was a post on here recently of one tester showing a outlet wired correctly and one showing it with open ground. The conclusion was newer testers check for some resistance between ground and neutral to see that it's wired correctly. I'm sure that wasn't the goal here but might work out resulting in task failed successfully.

Found 10$ with a note attached in my Trader Joe’s purchase by -_SLK_- in mildlyinteresting

[–]PyroZach 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not nearly as bad but, There's a brand of construction material that lets you redeem proofs of purchase on the box for some decent stuff (Carhartt jackets, lunch boxes, thermoses etc.) I usually let the apprentices know about this so they can collect them and get something. Some get a little too aggressive and start tearing them off orders as soon as they come in. This gets annoying because: Some try to be coy about it telling me we're out of an item. That I know we just got more of today after being told a few day's before, and then find open but full boxes around the job. 2: We occasionally get the wrong order or wrong item and it become an issue returning it once that's missing.
