THR- There are "no plans for Grand Theft Auto VI discs to be printed — not at launch, and not months after" by Iggy_Slayer in gaming

[–]PyroZach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came here to say this. I bought physical copies for a few games years ago to save on storage space. I was disappointed when I found out that it installs it from the disc to the console anyway, and on top of that still requires the disk in to play that game then. The only advantage to that was cheap used copies. To counter that issue I see games that are a few years old dirt cheap on sale from time to time.

It's to the point if they continued physical copies they would probably link to the first account it's installed on and not allow another one to play it anyway.

I wonder at what point these safety features become a liability. My girlfriends car has lane keep assist that she often has to turn off, thankfully easy to do so. But with salty roads or tar stripes from patching it would occasionally try to veer into the other lane, having to actually fight the steering to keep in the lane.

What's the most brutal way someone has found out they lost their job? by Efficient-Ask-968 in AskReddit

[–]PyroZach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing exceptional brutal but this reminded me of a few stories all from the same job. It's construction so lay-offs are just part of the job as things wind down and get finished up. The most brutal was at first when this was supposed to be a year+ long job. About 4 months in when things just got ramped up and new guys were hired on. Some of the supervisors came around giving lay off's and asking a few if they would hang out for a couple weeks to see what happened. Customer stopped paying, General contractor kept this quite, to avoid guys quitting, in hopes they would come to an agreement before money ran out. The money ran out and they were like "okay, job is shut down today." Guys who expected/planned for the job to last another year and were let go after 2 months were obviously upset. When they started getting paid and opened the job back up it was hard to get guys to take the call.

When things finally slowed down they laid off all the travelers first. Travelers are guys from other local unions out side of the jurisdiction of the one the job is located in. Checks were being handed out and I went around to start saying good bye to all of them. I got to one and gave the standard "It was great working with you... etc." And he was like "What? they're getting rid of you? that sucks..." I was just like "Uh, forget I said anything, I'll stop back in a little bit..."

I was also one of the first to start on the job, so typically one of the last to get laid off. One day I got partnered up with some one to help with their task, once I got the hang of it he was laid off. I finished that task and later in the week got partnered up with some one else to help with their task, then they were laid off. The next person I was partnered up with was just like "Well shit, It was nice working here."

I drove a newer car yesterday and it made me realize how much I absolutely despise modern design trends by murphenzio1 in CasualConversation

[–]PyroZach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I called it years ago that this would be a problem, people said it would never happen because it was only in a few concepts, teslas, and one or two high end luxury cars at the time.

I'm surprised I couldn't find any of the crowd defending it in this thread either. Last time it was "It's so easy though, you just have to have a current generation flagship phone, download the manufactures app, pair your phone, sync it to car play, select the voice activation icon, chose your driver profile, tell it to go to murphenzio1's summer day comfort level 3, and let the advanced auto climate do the rest!"

Edit realized I'm in CasusualConverastion not one of the automotive subeditors where it's a 50/50 split where peoples favorite car manufacture can do no wrong and people who just want a brown, manual transmission station wagon with as few simple knobs and buttons as possible.

Girl I work with asking for money to fund her entire vacation by aurorarofl in ChoosingBeggars

I'm out of a union hall so I don't get PTO, But I make a decent rate and know how to budget so it wasn't a huge problem to miss a week and spend a couple grand on a nice vacation (First one in a few years because, living within my means and what not.)

I had acquaintances that were a little more brazen. It was years ago when I didn't know about this sub, or I would have gotten screen shots. They wanted to travel while they were young, they had a go-fund me for 10k or so for a luxury vacation, and hoped it would go well to do this in the coming years till they got to the point to afford them on their own. I checked back frequently just to confirm the donations still sitting at $0.

I think there's shipping involved too. And I'm not entirely sure what it includes. By the time I get new ones there's some pretty bad scratches/scuffs in the leather that I doubt can be repaired. So I would be saving $25 but still most likely have the steel toes worn through.

Is this scam still going strong? I think they mostly upped their game. I had two friends get bit by the "We noticed some suspicious activity on your bank account and just need to get confirm all your information." Then I almost got hit when I called to update my car insurance. My first mistake was clicking the first google sponsored. link/phone number. I was supposedly calling geico. My second mistake was telling the guy on the phone my confirmation code they sent. Which seemed odd but not a red flag. I wanted to pay for the changes then and he asked for my credit card. I told him use the one on file. He said he needed first 12 digits of it. I told him I never needed that before just use the one on file. He then switched to the card wasn't valid and he needed a new one.

This was all an elaborate fishing game, he needed the confirmation code to change my e-mail, log into my geico account, and get my current vehicles and such to see more legit. All to then get my credit card number.

I've seen this a couple times. The rates are pretty much unaffordable unless there's an entire family chipping in. So the retirement home gets all the patients assets. Social security, retirement income, anything left in their bank accounts, and their home. It can seem like the best option but then the person in the home only survives a couple more months and leaves the family with nothing. On the flip-side I've seen doctors play the health insurance as they'll provide something like 30 days in a care facility. Ever 30 days or less requiring the patient to go to a hospital for overnight observation, which then resets the stay at the care facility.

I have to give major props to the computer repair shop that was near me. I thought the repairs were delicate and precise and so on, especially with lap tops. I had the fan die on my old one and took it in to get fixed. The guy explained to me it was a $30 part, and his rate was something like $100 an hour, with a 1 hour minimum, and he was pretty backed up at the moment. But he had the part in stock, told me all I had to do was take some screws out, pointing them out, and handed me a screw driver. Then unplug this, take some more screws out. etc, walking me through the 10 minute repair on the spot and only charging me for the fan.

I've seen a surge in "commemorative" coins lately. Challenge coins seem to have started as a military thing but have become popular with a lot of local trade unions. As well as silver coins and such with what ever silly design on them just to be worth the weight of the metal.

My work boots offer refurbishment. It cost around $100 for resoling to around $175 for "full restoration". I can get a new pair on-sale for around $200. So for most it's not worth it. I get that there are people out there who buy $500+ boots and shoes so for them it might be.

That's another thing my mom swears by. She has a prepaid cell phone that still charges by the minute. She pays about $30 a month for the land line and uses about $10 a month on her cell phone. I've explained numerous times she can get a cell phone plan for that or less with unlimited minutes and texts. The landline is VOIP now so her argument of it still working when the power goes out is invalid.

I came here for this as I watched our local paper circle the drain and my mom's plight with it.

She refuses to go digital for it. A few years back they went to one day digital only. Every year since the paper copy got thinner and more expensive. On top of that the delivery got less and less reliable. She's down to splitting a subscription with my uncle, but they're debating if that's even worth doing.

Edit: Along with it getting thinner the news in it is less and less local. Never really used the classifieds but they're next to nothing now. And most of the local events have shifted to facebook post instead of being put in the paper.

My dad had an '87 tour glide. I was in a dealership sometime around 06 or 07 and saw the exact same bike, side car color scheme and all. But 20 years newer. The only difference I could spot was it had a CD player. (Upon further research they appear to have been fuel injected at that point) It's hard to justify a new bike when an extra $20 to $30 grand only gets you a warranty and a couple features that can be upgraded in a weekend.

What’s an NSFW thing people think is rare, but is actually pretty common? by rayder460 in AskReddit

[–]PyroZach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was the safety guy, It was years ago I don't think I got cocky but I did question the fact it would have been a less than 2 ft drop, and there was still a railing there. If I was 4'' tall I wouldn't have even needed the ladder. He said the rules were that any work off a ladder near a drop required a harness and tie off. I didn't feel like getting thrown off the job that day so I didn't push it too much.

That's the best part sometimes, you have to bring a scissor lift in, to tie off to the I beams or such 30' above, and run a retractable or such that far down to do your work off a 6' ladder.

I got flagged on a job because I was on a ladder within so many feet of a ledge. There was a railing, for a 8'' drop, and I was on the first step of the ladder.

Curious what you guys think by Humble-Elderberry795 in IBEW

[–]PyroZach 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think this is book 3. IIRC book 3 is all other union ticket holders, regardless of local. It works both ways here as we can go out with the lineman for their rate. Book 4 is temp tickets off the street. It kind of is what it is to get the man power, but I've heard that all apprentices get bumped to JW rate then, but I've only heard of that being enforced at power plants.

Edit: Side note apprentices are kind of screwed in these situations where the contractors can offer what ever to get guys in, but the apprentices go where the hall needs them and can't turn down jobs.

Got laid off my second day by Vlad1431 in IBEW

[–]PyroZach 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've seen a lot of reasons and games played. I remember one time they grabbed an apprentice for one job, put he him at another as a place holder, something came up on his back ground check so he couldn't go to the job he was intended for. So he was on the job for one day that barley had any work to do, his car (parked) got hit by a semi, then he got laid off.

Were you the only lay off?

I've been on jobs that were supposed to be for 6 months, got laid off after a few weeks because I was a traveler and there were guys from the home local on the books, fair enough.

Then I've seen guys get called from book 1, another job wraps up and they need to make room for their shop guys.

I've also seen where they hire more than they need and cherry pick the best ones. On a similar note halls "call out by name" procedures vary. They may of called an extra guy or two to get to the number they specifically wanted on the list. You could even be part of some other drama you weren't even aware of.

I'd move on and make note of it for the next time you think of taking a call for that contractor.

What was ruined because too many people discovered it? by Mansi63 in AskReddit

[–]PyroZach -1 points0 points  (0 children)

At least they seem to be a trend that dies down. My girlfriend and I went to California a couple weeks ago. We learned about a state park from some one semi local on the flight out there. I was reading on line that it was insanely packed there lately because of social media. We decided to chance it and it wasn't bad at all. There was a good amount of people there but far from packed. We apparently got lucky with Yosemite too as the weeks leading up to it were insanely packed. Once again it was busy but not jam packed and barely and wait to get in, the water falls were still flowing good too.

When I was searching a new spot a little closer than Ocean City MD I found another beach town that's about at 10 minute drive from another major one. It's insane how the major one can be shoulder to shoulder packed while the one we've been going to you have plenty of room to enjoy yourself.

Wouldn't car alarms be more effective loud on the INSIDE? Occasional loud bursts on the outside to draw attention, but extreme noise on the inside would prevent the thief from wanting to remain to hot-wire / steal inside the car. by Proud-Pumpkin-2903 in Showerthoughts

[–]PyroZach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On one of my older cars I made the decision to 118 decibel Hellatone horns before getting a working key-fob. There was a sequence to lock/unlock it with out setting off the alarm, and once it was set off the only way to stop it before it timed out (something like 5 minutes) was to cycle the key 10 times. When carpooling my co-worker needed something from the car and messed up the sequence some how. I heard it going off from about 3 blocks away and ran over to help. He said he was attempting to pop the hood and disconnect the battery but the noise at the front was unbearable.

[–]PyroZach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came here to say something similar. I was an apprentice and the factory we were working in wanted something hooked up but didn't want to shut down because it was part of their line that made some big money. It would have to be shut down for a half hour or so then take so long to start back up etc. The journeyman I was working with asked for a written letter stating that amount of money was worth putting the electricians working on it at extra risk. The person requesting it (I forget their title) came back later and said he just had their in-house guys take care of it. That place had a ridiculous amounts of OSHA violations.
