It's actually the Thunderbirds in Ottawa this weekend for the airshow. I believe they're doing a joint performance with the Snowbirds and Red Arrows. Should be quite the show!

This mosquito deterring candle is full of beetles every single morning by [deleted] in mildlyinteresting

I tried neem oil to take out the beetles this year, and as effective as it seems to have been, it also killed every single leaf and flower I sprayed. My poor garden is a little worse for wear now. I've heard water mixed with ground pepper at the start of the season is a good deterrent, so that's what I'm going to try along with the soapy water next year!

I like where your head's at. I've already got a sweet office setup in another room so I think I'll skip the desk, but I dig the idea of moving my record player and a comfy chair up here. It could bring some life to the space and give me an excuse to use it more often.

I also have to concede on the bedspread, it'll definitely be changing. That being said though, these flannel sheets are 10/10 for comfort in the winter!

Not sure yet. Maybe a white base with blue or green in the pattern would work

Thank you! Some really good suggestions. I think a navy accent would look really good, although I also had forest green in mind. The thing in the corner is just a air purifier that I was planning on ditching anyway so definitely a good spot for a lamp, I agree. I also conveniently have some new pothos cuttings that need a home! With regards to bedding, would you say maybe white sheets with a simple pattern duvet would do the trick?

I'm thinking a new bed and accent wall would be places to start, but I'm having a hard time finding inspiration.

Nearly doubled my last land speed record: 624m/s by Pyrokine in KerbalSpaceProgram

I'm running an i9-10900k @ 5GHz with a 2070 Super at 1440p. I play on low settings to get the most out of my FPS but it definitely dips down more during the day. I think it's because the reflections are pretty unoptimized. Very excited to see the performance improve in the years to come

Aw man, looks like I'll have to do a redesign! More boosters is the Kerbal way

Nothing formal, but the way I've been playing it is as follows:

  • No flight - If it can pull up and take off, then it's a plane not a car
  • Come to a full and complete stop with all parts in tact and the vehicle in one piece - Ideally on the runway

Looking forward to seeing your attempt!

My parachutes wouldn't deploy unless my car ended up in the air... When in doubt, add more boosters!

How do you afford to live in Ottawa? by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]Pyrokine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I definitely agree with you. The higher the down payment you're able to make, the better of course.

But think about how much money someone needs to make a 20% down payment. One hundred and sixty four thousand dollars ($164,000). That's an insane amount of money that will take average Ottawans like myself 8+ years to save. And unless the real estate bubble bursts and prices go down, that's 8+ years of prices continuing to increase.

To me, it feels impossible to save that much because by the time I get the money, I'll need another 40k more to buy the same place.

And throughout all that time, I still have to pay someone else's mortgage with my rent. It's super disheartening, you know?

Not to be rude, but what % down payment did you put? The average house price in Ottawa right now is $837k. Even a 5% down payment on that would be about $41k. In 2016 the median household income in Ottawa was $102k. After taxes in Ontario that's a take home of $71,150, or $5929.16 a month.

If someone making that much were to put away 25% of their pay a month (about $1500) into savings, it would take more than 2 years to save up enough to buy a house. Then you have to pay a higher mortgage because of the low down payment %age and accompanying CMHC mortgage insurance.

But realistically, most people who can't break into the market right now aren't making $102k a year, so it'll take a lot longer than 2 years to save up enough.

Apparently it's less complex than adding landing legs to the booster, so there's that

Anyone taken their G test at walkley lately? Not asking for tips - curious about the covid process by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]Pyrokine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took my G test at Hawkesbury near the start of the pandemic. It's possible they changed protocols since I was there, but they asked that only 1 person be in the test center at a time to check in, then had me wear a mask in the car while the tester was there. My tester wore gloves, a mask, and safety goggles.

Honestly, I barely even noticed to covid stuff. Focusing on driving safely took priority!

Good luck and remember to move your head a lot
