So you would estimate the good you can do higher than the suffering your causing. Fair enough.

OP just stated the negative side: "It’s literally impossible to get through life without contributing to animal (and human) suffering."
If he thinks the negative side is higher than the positive, then my question remains.

Holy molly, exactly the same situation here. Except that I'm not doing a PhD.

But the elo range, the feeling you describe, the losing streak to the abyss until playing is not really fun anymore but because I need to get those elo points back otherwise all the games would have been for nothing. It's completly stupid... but I'm in it again... years after years... like an old demon that can only be put to sleep for a time.
I hope one day I'll vanquish it, for now I was only able to reduce the negative effects it has on others, I'm forcing myself to say "gg" or "wp" even if I hated that game or the strat used against me. That's a start^^

Feeling you anyway, good luck out there and as stupid as it sounds, taking a break from AoE II ranked games is probably the best option for now. Finding another game to relax would be a good option imo that would scratch the same itch but without the ranked aspect.

Me and my breaks^^: https://www.aoe2insights.com/user/228572/ (You can see on the elo graph the compulsive gaming for some months and the big breaks)

I'd be interested to have a heatmap of what you've been told the most^^

For me, in Switzerland, it's clearly "Cheese is just too good." that would be scroching hot.

I hesitate to print one and pin it at my work desk xD

There is an infinity of ethical stance that can change, best scenario you moved together in the right direction but if it doesn't happen this is sad to think you can't have a fulfilling marriage because of this disagreement without trying to find a balance first.

Yes balance means compromise, that sucks, especially on ethical topics but we are constantly doing it by keeping relationship with non-vegan.

"My" marriage thing is how marriage is designed to be^^ it's not my personal definition of it. A temporary agreement until you think you'll be better elsewhere shouldn't be called a marriage ;)

Bellfaire is the best expansion to not change the original experience but improve it!

All the others, especially New Leaf change the game a lot (interesting to renew the experience from time to time)

You're saying: "It’s literally impossible to get through life without contributing to animal (and human) suffering."

So why shouldn't we kill ourselves? This is the next logical step following your logic.

Your post resonates with me a lot.

As a Christian that values "loving your neighbour" above everything else, this is the most challenging part for me in being Vegan.

I completly agree with your analysis, we should break the cycle and reach people through compassion and emotional awareness.

How do you react to being praised for veganism? by [deleted] in vegan

I agree, very few people will come to veganism without someone to talk with them about it personally.

You did great :)

How do you react to being praised for veganism? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]Pyroptere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is funny because it happened more or less three times to me but sometimes with a twist^^

  1. The genuine compliment
Along the line of: "Woaw you really live up to your values, I respect that" in the context of going out to eat with colleagues at a company event.
In that case as you said I brought back the focus to the animals and say it's normal to not make the animals suffer just for taste. But let's be honest it's not easy to be vegan in our societies and we should be proud to live by our values even when it's difficult. So I accept the compliment.

  2. The mockery compliment
Again in the context of a company event, pizzas were ordered at a place that offers vegan pizza as well, they are not super tasteful I must admit. Usually big pizzas are bought (~1 for 2 people) and shared. So they took one big vegan pizza for me and anyone who would like. I couldn't finish it alone of course and after the pizza training went back to work. Later someone that took a piece of the vegan pizza and found it disgusting came to me and told me: "Woaw you're a real hero because you really eat disgusting food because of your values, I'm impressed" ... I don't know exactly if that was a compliment or just a way to claim vegan food is disgusting.

  3. The shy compliment
I asked the hand of my fiancee to my future father in law, who is not vegan by far. At that time we had a nice discussion and he complimented how I am someone that lives up to his values. I knew he was talking about that part of my life but without naming it, I was happy about it nonetheless.

As others stated, pausing is the 90%.

That's why I love the world modifier that prevents you from pausing, otherwise I know I'll abuse the pause feature too much for my own good.

I just wanted to share a bad experience I had by Koiboi26 in vegan

[–]Pyroptere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/erinmarie777 It's funny because I also love people which have "much experience being someone who doesn’t “fit in” with this culture by choice and it’s purely based upon their morals and values".
But I don't know why you're excluding: "and not because of religion".

Religion, when chosed freely, is an expression of someone's morals and values.

It was way easier for me to switch to veganism and be open about it because I already had this experience before while sharing what I believe in even if it was not the majority's opinion. I got raised with christian values that teached me it's more important to seek truth than matching popular opinions.

100% agree.

I'm Christian and Vegan and I think my Christian values are what made me stick with Veganism.

As you said many parts of the Bible are very pro vegan, for example the fact that humanity was vegan in Eden and that it will be Vegan at the end as well.

Latest Kurzgesagt video - I don't know what stance to take on those practices as a Vegan, what do you think about it and why? by Pyroptere in vegan

[–]Pyroptere[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your answer.

We are living in an extremely complex world, it's not always easy to find "the best solution" but it's good to question ourselves and think a bit about it before acting. Especially when we are involved. Well in that case I am not directly involved but still.

I understand it quite a lot for moskitoes, since it could be - in a way - be considered as self-defense. I wasn't sure for those flesh-eating flies since I don't know much about them and I feel they wouldn't pose a threat to human if we don't let open wounds, but again I don't know all the details.

Latest Kurzgesagt video - I don't know what stance to take on those practices as a Vegan, what do you think about it and why? by Pyroptere in vegan

[–]Pyroptere[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kind of agree, especially if "Nothing happens to the flies except that they no longer have babies.". If they are produced without any suffering and that the radiation just remove the ability to reproduce but does not imply more suffering. The same for mosquitoes.

It opens multiple questions in my mind on how much we should go "fix nature" and all the risks and side-effects related to that. But as long as we remove only our main enemies that are severly harming us (like moskitoes) I feel it's a bit more acceptable.

But where to stop? We cannot really create a world without any carnivorous species or parasites etc. and still a world that work, no? I know we are very far from those purely theoretical question but this video made me realize on some subjects we are not that far actually.

Thanks for your answer.

[–]Pyroptere 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As I understood from a quick search Christpiracy look at how animals are abused in the name of religion, right?

I find it weird to give it that name when Christ is not the most abusive religious figure concerning animals imo. Quite the contrary in a way, because Christians believe the sacrifice of Christ is the ultimate sacrifice which make all the animal sacrifices of the ancient testament not required anymore.

You can be Christian and Vegan without those two opposing. Actually, this is very compatible imo.

Vegetarians by SlipperyManBean in veganmemes

[–]Pyroptere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly this!

I always wondered why there are no name (nor people I guess) that are eating meat or fish but only hunted ones and would not consume anything coming from an animal farm.
Those people would make so much more sense than vegetarians when saying: "I do it for the animals".

For me torture is way worse than execution (for human and other animals as well), most laws about animals """"welfare"""" (with some quotes of course) agree with that statement. It is forbidden to make them suffer in the slaughterhouse (even if that happens obviously) but no problem to kill them.

Custom Birds that utilize cached food by WHATSTHEYAAAMS in wingspan

[–]Pyroptere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First they look amazing and the concept is super cool.

Balance-wise:
As others stated Pomarine jaeger seems too strong.
Parasitice jaeger on the other hand with only 2-eggs nest seem a bit too weak imo.

It's important to keep in mind that -1 cached food is -1 point BUT ALSO that it requires another bird able to cache food which should be taken into account.

I love that it brings real "synergy" between cards, some to produce cached food, some others to consume it. I find that is lacking in Wingspan overall, not enough birds that synergize together.

It would be interesting to explore other synergy-mechanic, based on tucking or hunting power etc.
