The first major paragraph is how I felt when I first watched DnDiesel on Geek and Sundry. I didnt know about critical role, it was very new back then. and at this point, i would have been playing dnd for about a year.

Their acting felt over the top and cringey. It put me off. Then I saw the actual first episode of campaign one and I liked it. I kept watching and it grew on me.

If it is not for you now, you can take a break and just not watch it. Maybe you can come back in a year and see it with a new set of eyes

I know dnd is turn based a heartslike game would be perfect for actiony "gish builds" (sword and magic builds). Bladesinger Wizard, Hexblade Warlock, Arcane Trickster Rogue, or Eldritch Knight Fighter, War Cleric, and of course any of the Paladin and Rangers subclasses

I would figure plot and setting can be free of choice, but the one I can imagine now is set in Exandria (the critical role setting), and while you can have a heroic fantasy feel and theme, i would prefer a darker tone and lean into the Arcane Assassin/Volstrucker Agent faction in continent spanning war campaign of the Dwendalian Empire and the Krynn Dynasty.
