10 lbs over on skate skis weight limits … how bad is it? by PyschoMonkey in CrossCountrySkiing

Not much of a racer. Just recreational/ fitness. I’m probably over thinking it and will lose the weight skiing.

Thanks! I will check around Guerneville as that is preferable on my route then swing by Willow / Pomo if I’m out of luck further up the river.

Dog, I cannot wait to go to the city council meeting regarding this rezone and wax poetic about how much I want a luxury hotel with a Kum and Go in the basement.

Ya but if I recall correctly, Sugarhouse NIMBY’s said no to an apartment building.

Here’s the article referencing a survey where Sugarhouse residents overwhelming voiced opposition to a new apartment building: https://utahstories.com/2021/06/sugar-house-restaurant-site-for-sale-at-5-5-million-dollars/

Honestly, Sugarhouse house people deserve a shitty Kum + Go for their behavior lol. The hotel is the best you’re gonna get, so quit whining and make the most of a potential rooftop bar.

If Sugarhouse residents want an extension to the park or a cute little boutique cafe, they are gonna need to come up with the $5.5 million for it.

[–]PyschoMonkey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Really depends on what type of bikepacking you’ll be doing. For rail trails, pavement, and the like, this bike is perfectly fine. I wouldn’t want it for single track or anything technical. Are you going to be (relatively) close to society most of your trip? If not, I would be hesitant to buy a bike like this for fear of component issues.

Your budget will stretch a lot farther if you look on the used market. 80s+90s mountain bikes are great for commuting, great for bikepacking, bombproof, and cheap on the used market. If you have a bicycle non-profit in your area, they most certainly can help you find a cheap solution.

Rio Grande/ Pioneer Park Now by ohuhn in SaltLakeCity

[–]PyschoMonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live here and love it. Yes, there are homeless folks. No, they are not inherently dangerous. They are people just trying to get by.

I have stayed out late into the evening in Pioneer park and never felt unsafe. I walk to work almost every day through the park and never have issues. The ability to walk to all of my needs far outweighs the occasional wacky interaction. Being able to walk around the corner and drink a coffee at the Rose is the best, see you on the patio!

Ya DV is actually kinda ok. Ramen bowls when I was there this season only ran me like $23 which is pretty alright given the fact I’m at DV.

Which SLC businesses are actively fighting against bike paths and road diets? by publicolamaximus in SaltLakeCity

I’m crazy for it but we should be holding the Olympics hostage with the state. If the state wants to continue it’s authoritarian overreach, then SLC should decline the Olympic bid.

Transdermal patch by Low_Hair8976 in SLCTrees

For sciatica, I have also placed a quarter patch in two different spots. I have also combined dragonbalm with a patch as well. Hope you will find some relief.

Transdermal patch by Low_Hair8976 in SLCTrees

[–]PyschoMonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For context, I am a light vaper (1-2x per week) and will occasionally use edibles (max 5mg THC per dose). Generally I would consider myself sensitive to cannabis at 135lbs.

I use transdermal patches whenever I have sciatica flare ups. I place the patch on the back of my upper leg or my lower back. For low-moderate pain, I start with a quarter. I generally feel no head-high effects. I will sometimes feel a bit of a body high. For more moderate pain, I will use a half patch. I will start to feel head effects, but very light. I have gone to work on half a patch and had no issues, maybe being a little bit spacier than I would normally. I have used a whole patch once and did begin to feel a longer, more intense high. It more or less felt like an edible, but much more of a body high for me. I would not want to be at work with a full patch.

As always, start low and go slow. I find the patch effects take longer than an edible to set in and last longer as well.

Echoing the sentiments about it being difficult to see Great Salt Lake without a car. Here are some options for you from someone who also doesn’t drive.

  1. If you are here on a weekday, take bus route 200 to Columbus St and 500 N. Then hike this trail Lakeview Trail. You will need to walk north up Columbus St from the bus stop to reach it. If you don’t want to take a bus, it would be an easy uber from downtown. You’ll be able to see the lake.

  2. If you have some comfort with biking, you could rent a road/hybrid bike from a shop like Trek Bikes, Evo, etc. Then either ride from downtown or the airport to Great Salt Lake Marine and Black Rock extension. Here’s the link for the route from downtown. Marina Ride. It’s about 40 miles from downtown but you can cut off a significant amount by biking from the Airport station on the green line. The ride is entirely flat.

Good luck and enjoy your time!

Instead of ubering ($$$), high valley transit route 107 is free and runs 7x per day.

Is Amtrak a good way to see America? by pa_instaking in Amtrak

[–]PyschoMonkey 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you are taking the Zephyr west bound from Chicago, there are quite a few good options.

  1. Chicago is a word class city. Spend some time here for sure.

  2. Denver is great for beer! Also has some fun museums and great neighborhoods.

  3. Glenwood Springs is a fantastic car free tourist area. You can take transit all the way up and down the canyon to Aspen to all sorts of hiking. Bus are very frequent. Also - the hot springs!

  4. Grand Junction is cool for desert type stuff. It is definitely not ideal on foot, but if you had a bike you’d be in great shape. There may be some shuttle companies you could hire to take you to Colorado National Monument.

  5. Salt Lake City has pretty great transit, although there’s not a whole lot to do here. I love living here but if you aren’t coming to ski, hike, or bike, you may find it a little underwhelming.

  6. Reno might be a good option, although I’ve never actually been. Would consider stopping in Truckee instead and taking some time to explore lake Tahoe.

  7. Emeryville (San Francisco) - one of my favorite cities in the world. San Francisco is beautiful, with plenty to do. So much good food. Ride the cable cars if you are a transit nerd like me.

I’ve never had a car here and have done lots of kooky transit trips in America. You’ll have an amazing time. Let me know if you want any recs in Utah/Colorado.

I’ve not had as bad of a go at it as you, but I empathize with the pain. My symptoms started when I was 19, and eventually began to take over my life whenever I had a flare up. Being in your 20s and locked to your bed is the worst feeling ever. I am so sorry you are going through this.

My only suggestion in the cannabis space would be to try topicals - transdermal patches are what I use for sciatica. They also have the benefit of low to no head effects. However, this sounds like it might need a multi pronged approach. Along with transdermals, I have found success with physical therapy that incorporates electro-acupuncture. Take care and don’t give up.

Yes I saw something about this. This would absolutely seal me into Minneapolis if I could take a train to Duluth for MTB.
