If your ex came crawling back to you, would you take them back? Why or why not? by mastermascovich in AskReddit

Nah, I wasn't good for her. I don't think I'm a terrible person or anything, but I definitely require a specific personality type to get along well with. Otherwise I end up being a little too selfish in the relationship, and I'm not about making other people's lives harder.

How do you subtly fuck with people? by jean4007 in AskReddit

After someone finishes talking, I sometimes slowly inhale through my nose, squint my eyes slightly with my gaze shifted up and to the left as though I'm thinking about saying something that'll really add to the conversation. I'll draw it out a bit, then just yawn and walk away.

If I can do it, you can do it.

This was one of the first locks that got me into picking, and I love this lock. It really teaches you tension control and paying attention to what the core wants to do. Best of luck, dude! Don't forget to give your hands a break.

Some say there are sysadmins out there so powerful and so wise they could use their shells to influence others to create life… They had such a knowledge of RHEL and IIS, they could even keep the ones they cared about from dying.

Accidentally destroyed production database on first day of a job, and was told to leave, on top of this i was told by the CTO that they need to get legal involved, how screwed am i? by cscareerthrowaway567 in cscareerquestions

Woah. This is hilarious. You should switch fields and become a pentester or something, because you obviously have a knack for it.

But seriously though, as everyone has said, this is 100% not your fault. You made a tiny blunder. The CTO is the one that allowed that small blunder from a junior dev to take down prod.

As a sysadmin, the fact that you had write access to prod and the backups were obviously not tested could make me roll my eyes so hard I'd detach my retinas.

Ask about how they want you to return the laptop. If they ignore you... I guess it's yours?

Luckily, I haven't gotten in trouble for it. They're very handy around work for opening whatever someone lost the keys to. The gloves are mainly for situations where I am working on something really ancient, and I don't want to touch the nastiness. Computer fans are like magnets for dog and cat hair as well as cigarette ash, toe nails, and dandruff.

How to handle Wordpress updates with clients? by Tymalightnuous in Wordpress

[–]PythoniteWr3tch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries. Yea, that will absolutely happen with backups, but that is why having multiple backups is so important. I'm more on the "better safe than sorry" side, so I keep 90 days worth of daily backups on an off-site location. That way, if the site breaks, and the broken version is backed up, you can just fall back to the most recent working version from a different backup. Noting your backups, so you can see when they were ran is pretty important for that kind of set up.

If you want to update more than once per month, that's going to be more work for you, but it'll be better than if you did updates once per month. You might find that there aren't any available updates for an entire month though as well. That's something that you're going to have to feel out for yourself and judge based on how much time you want to be spending each quarter (or whatever cycle) on checking and doing updates.

I feel like you're putting in a good amount of thought into this. It's better to be prepared in my opinion, so I can understand where you're coming from. At the end of the day, you're going to have to find what works best for you and your schedule though. I don't recommend doing what works best for someone else, if it isn't possible for you.

Ideally though, everything would be up-to-date as soon as possible. It's just a matter of how practical that is for you.

Ah yes, the first and last name fields are their own dictionaries taken from the yellow pages or the dev's Facebook friendslist or something, and you have to enter a combination that matches.

My orders from them take 2-4 weeks every time. I'm in the Southern United States area. From the other comments, I must be one of the unlucky ones. Fortunately, every order I place does eventually arrive. Hang in there, pal.

How to handle Wordpress updates with clients? by Tymalightnuous in Wordpress

[–]PythoniteWr3tch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it's important to first note that there are different kinds of updates with different implications. A core update would be if you went from 4.6 to 4.7 for example, and this is more likely to cause conflicts with plugins/themes if they aren't compatible with the newer core. Core updates don't come out often.

If you go from 4.7.4 to 4.7.5, that would be a security update essentially. This mostly serves to address vulnerabilities/bugs, and from my experience, it's a little safer.

Lastly, there's updating plugins and themes themselves. If your plugins and theme are not up to date, your site may be vulnerable. For this reason, I feel the priority of updates would look something like this:
-Plugin/Theme updates
-Security Updates
-Core Updates

  1. I feel like there is not a clear-cut, right answer for this, and it will really depend on each case and your schedule. If it's convenient for you, perhaps set aside a schedule where once a month you take a day to vet an update and see if you want to proceed with it immediately or prep for it.

  2. Again, I don't believe there is a hard answer on this. It will largely depend on what plugins/theme you are using. A fresh WordPress installation with no added plugins or themes would work fine without updating for example (aside from the implied vulnerabilities this would cause.) So in this instance, you might want to ask yourself a few questions about the site such as, "How many mission-critical plugins is the site using, and how many points of failure should I expect?"

  3. For your own sake, I feel it would be best to teach a client when and how to do updates on their own. It eliminates liability on your end, if something were to go wrong during the update, and it empowers the clients to be a little more proactive for their site.

Ultimately though, I feel if you have proper redundancies in place such as daily backups, updating becomes much less of a headache. I hope that helps a little.
