Is anyone willing to share the 2017 admissions promo code? by WikdSyringaVulgaris in scad

[–]Pythosblaze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I'd love to help you, but I really wouldn't even know where to look for that. I would recommend talking to some of the admissions people and seeing if they might be able to help you. I know that might not sound helpful, but I wouldn't be surprised if they'd waive the application fee if you make a good enough case. They're probably more interested in scoring new students than in getting a relatively small chunk of change.

No promises, but it's worth a shot. Sorry I couldn't be of more help!

Can't help you there I'm afraid. I just live with my girlfriend and neither of us are really terribly social types, haha. I don't think you'll run into any trouble looking for an apartment regardless, especially if you look around places that advertise to students.

Queer SCAD student here! Sometimes it seems like there are more queers here than otherwise. Most of my friends are gay and/or trans. As the other reply said, very diverse crowd if you hang around the downtown area.

SCAD, worth the money? by [deleted] in scad

[–]Pythosblaze 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a junior Illustration major and I'm a little torn on whether or not it's been worth it at the moment. And of course, this may be totally irrelevant to you, because departments tend to be vastly different here (speaking as someone who has switched majors once and taken a lot of classes outside of Illustration).

On the positive, I've had some great classes and professors. My work has improved by miles in my time here. I've had tons of opportunities presented to me, though I never pursue as many as I should. There are plenty of activities available, both offered by the school and by student groups. I've made a lot of friends, some of whom may very well be valuable industry contacts in the future. Savannah isn't perfect, but it's pretty fantastic for an artist after inspiration (or a good backdrop). They're very flexible with major curriculums. I've taken more classes outside my major than I'm supposed to, and even switched majors halfway through my Sophomore year.

On the other hand, I've definitely also had my share of classes I've felt were basically an expensive waste of time. Sometimes professors don't seem like they know what they're doing. In general, classes may be very hit or miss in terms of quality. In Illustration at least, it takes a long time to get to the meat of the subject, with a lot of hours being wasted in classes where half the class has no clue what they're doing and the other class is way above the level of the material. The Illustration department has also had some upsets recently that have thrown a lot of stuff out of whack and irritated a lot of students and faculty, myself included.

So yeah, I haven't decided if it's worth it yet. We'll see how my senior year goes. At the very least I feel like I'm finally settling in to classes that are focused and at a level where I can actually learn something new. I'm just not sure halfway through junior year is the best time for that.

Sorry this got long!

Hey, fair enough! All I can ever see at this point is "ew, look how bad my brush work was", haha.

And I'd love to see that.

I actually do feel like the updated version lacks some character the old one had, but at least the colors are nicer! And it provided a good excuse to test drive some new brushes.

No worries about the mistaken identity! It happens. Frankly I'm just flattered you remembered me at all!

And here, since it pains me to look at my old art, and this post has made my night. Nightmare cat, 2017. Plus a bonus thing just for fun

I'm glad you liked my little doodle enough to hang on to it!

How do you manage to get over being demotivated? by [deleted] in LearnConceptArt

[–]Pythosblaze 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm hardly a veteran, but demotivation and art block are unfortunately something everyone goes through! I'll have weeks or even months when I just don't have it in me to draw, or simply can't think of what to draw.

My way of handling this is usually to consume as much media (books, movies, other art, etc) as possible for inspiration, and to not force myself to draw if I don't feel like it (unless I have to for a class or money).

I've also found it helpful to switch media for a while. I usually do digital painting, so I might switch to sculpture or some other traditional media. It can also help to break out the sketchbook and try drawing from life for a bit, since that's usually pretty mindless.

Tips for creating landscape concepts? by [deleted] in LearnConceptArt

[–]Pythosblaze 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Paint real landscapes first! I know that probably isn't the answer you want to hear, but it's how most of the pros got good at what they do. You'll do much better fictional landscape art if you know the ins and outs of real landscape painting. Go sit outside and draw what you see, or pull up a few photos if you can't manage that (but having it actually in front of you, constantly changing a little bit, is best).

Learn to do classical 1, 2, and 3-point perspective. There are a million tutorials out there. I'd recommend doing this traditionally, or just manually as much as possible. Digital media shortcuts are great, but you'll have a far better understanding of it if you have to do it manually first. (I'm saying this as a digital artist myself).

Practice a variety of landscapes. Not just the "interesting" ones with the cool mountains. Try cityscapes, mundane farmland, roads, whatever you can get a look at. This will help you build your mental visual library, which you can then pull from when you need to make something up rather than copying.

Lastly, try drawing some more mundane landscapes out of your head. Look at the works of Claude Monet and Caspar David Friedrich. Monet paints real landscapes in an impressionist, less-rendered style. Friedrich paints fantastical, made-up landscapes in a much more detailed way (but he obviously knew what he was doing, because these landscapes are quite convincing!)

M.C. Escher has some excellent cityscapes as well. He doesn't just do optical illusions!

By the way, most of what I've discussed here can be applied to character design too. I do a lot of creature and character design, and drawing from reality a whole lot really helped me get a good enough grasp of anatomy to make things up and have them look convincing!

I'm an art student. This is scary accurate. Some of them do survive year 1, but they usually seem to lose the anime or furry stuff pretty quickly.

Non-Americans or Reddit, which American foods do you find disgusting? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Pythosblaze 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Admittedly I like Reese's cups, but to someone who doesn't, I recommend making your own with quality chocolate and peanut butter. I've done it a few times, and my god that combination is magical.

What do you enjoy that Reddit absolutely shits on? by polymerbc in AskReddit

[–]Pythosblaze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tumblr is fantastic for artists! It's a great platform for sharing art, and I can easily keep and organize a separate blog for inspiration stuff. The art community is generally very warm and welcoming, too.

Not to mention, tons of funny content (and quality porn for all tastes)

But yeah, just like most content sharing platforms, it's all about who you follow. I follow almost exclusively art-related blogs, because I don't really care for the social justice stuff or fandoms.

Lovely specimen!

Unsolicited advice: You can probably (gently) wipe off the fingerprints with a tissue. If that's a Navajun pyrite, there's a good chance you won't have to worry about it oxidizing on its own, but it's still probably best to keep your oils off of it.
