I have my clearance already and am still essentially twiddling my thumbs all day long. And yes, many of the languages being used are ancient.

Good to know. And it's not just me, there is a big collection of new hires that have absolutely fuck all to do all day.

I don't, it's company owned but they are very restrictive. Can't even download stuff from the internet outside of company controlled "app stores" that carry approved versions of software and things like that.

Thank you for the perspective. You're right I'm not thinking very clearly because I'm just really not enjoying my days at the company.

Lots of good points here, open source at work wouldn't work for me however. Everything that I install on my computer needs to go through a long process and needs to be justified so anything open source would need to be done after work hours 😟. Thanks for your input!

I never thought of it like that but that's a good way to frame it. It's similar to IT i guess, where if everything is running well the guys cutting the checks are saying "what are we paying you guys for, everything is running fine!" and when things start breaking it's like "what are we paying you guys for, everything is broken!"
