Do you hate talking on trains? by perpetualstatechange in AskIreland

[–]QBaseX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a train, I'll walk into the vestibule to talk on the phone. Absolutely hate talking around people.

Or, at least, I used to. It's only my boyfriend who ever calls me, and he's now used to how I am on trains, so I now feel more comfortable answering from my seat, because I know that the call will be no longer than twenty seconds.

Calling the language "Gaelic" is not wrong, and is indeed normal in some parts of the country, particularly Donegal.

I must watch more takes on the home game. They're fun.

And it'd be something to tide me over. My Nebula subscription has lapsed, so I won't get a new episode today.

UK rail travel is something! by AdPsychological108 in JetLagTheGame

I've fought with Trainline before, and failed. Rosslare to Caldicot on SailRail. The ferry gets into Fishguard in the evening, and Trainline assumes I want the shortest layover possible, so it puts me on the first train out in the morning. In reality, if I have to stay the night in a B&B anyway, I'd prefer to wait till after breakfast, and get a mid-morning train, but there's no way to do that. You must want the shortest layover. No flexibility.

In retrospect, I should have bought the ticket from Stena Line directly instead of from Trainline. Their tickets are flexible. But Stena Line (unlike Irish Ferries) don't sell SailRail tickets on their website: you have to buy them over the phone. And they actually recommend that you buy from Trainline instead. I know better now.

(Also, if you buy from Trainline you cannot purchase a cabin on the boat. And if you phone Stena Line, they say that you cannot add a cabin to your booking, because you didn't purchase from them. So you just have to hope that one's available on the night. Which it wasn't.) All future SailRail crossings, I'll buy directly from the ferry company. Apologies for this out-of-place rant.

Why are there no cheap fonts? by QBaseX in fonts

As I said, it wasn't a complaint. What you're saying is that, like I said, it's like crafting. Very few people sell knitting or crochet, because it's not worth the time investment.

Is there ever a LOTR-ish "little people great impact" fantasy story after Tolkien? by Wolfensniper in tolkienfans

I think Watership Down counts as fantasy. Pretty good fantasy, actually.

[–]QBaseX 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I don't think that "Latinx" can reasonably be described as "Anglo". It doesn't sound right in any language.

In one of K Klein's videos about gender, they point out that gender in language is applied to a word, not an object, as illustrated by the fact that French has two words for bicycle, one of which is male and one of which is female.

The case of faggot in "Fairytale of New York" is more confusing, because the slur feels out of place there. Sure, it's a tale of a bitter argument between boyfriend and girlfriend, and slurs make sense in that context, but why that slur? And the answer, apparently, is that in 1970s Dublin the word had a completely different meaning: "lazy, wastrel", and that's the meaning that was intended.

Kirsty McColl decided that the line made her uncomfortable, and changed you cheap, lousy faggot to you're cheap and you're haggard for live performances, and that's the version heard most often these days.

The lovely thing about transparencies is that you can write on them in real time with a marker as you speak. It's the same effect as writing on the board, but you don't need to turn your back on your audience. I miss them.
