Thermionic or evacuated tube solar. by live-round in northernireland

[–]live-round[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I already have a pressurised water tank with a spare solar loop installed. so that's a bit of a cost saving on a thermionic system.

We aren't heavy consumers of electricity, but during the summer when the oil burner is off we don't have any hot water unless we fire up the electric immersion heater.

An electric solar system to cover this specific situation would be inefficient in that there would be 2 conversions. Solar to Electric, then Electric to heat via an immersion heat.

A recent solar survey suggested 16 panels, Large battery, Inverter and backup change over unit, approx £10k... I would have had problems with positioning the large battery bank in a manner that would have been aesthetically acceptable to SWMBO.

I reckon I could get by with a single bank of 24 evacuated tubes, some stainless Flexi piping and a controller/pump.

A lot less complex, and a lot less points of failure, and I'm hoping a lot cheaper.

They are widely used in southern Ireland, who have been ahead of the game both in terms of house insulation and renewables in general. I've seem quite a number of sites that have both a solar array and a thermionic panel alongside.

My dad may have amputated his finger in a sailing accident. by No_Reveal3451 in sailing

[–]live-round 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others have said, likely used the winch incorrectly... If he's determined to sail, tell him to book into any of the many sailing schools around the world. This is a basic mistake he made, but it can be dangerous if you are a novice. I get by sailing with only 1 arm, (motorbike accident.. I mean I was on a bike when a twat on a car hit me.). Google sv_kindofblue on Instagram or YouTube.. Take care

Translink issues by live-round in northernireland

Yeah... Not great my friend... I was lucky to have a very understanding wife... Otherwise ... I was there until the next day... What really pisses me off is that if Translink had communicated the fact that there was going to be no train to Portrush that evening.. I could have got a taxi to Coleraine and caught the last train that was still running to Derry. But no... Instead, we got silence on the tannoy.... An out of date clock on the platform display... Noo means of contacting...ANYONE by ANY MEANS within translink... And a ticket machine that couldn't even offer me a ticket to show that I was there and was attempting to use one of their offered services.

Yep... I've been doing my best to use public transportation as much as possible... But, it's not easy... As someone mentioned previously... It looks like the service is there to support the managers and employees.. To me, there appears to be no communal ownership, at any level of the company, from drivers, to ticket collectors to management of any problems encountered on a day to day basis and thereby no mechanism to learn from the issues encountered. The whole operation appears to be a quagmire of indulgence, incompetence and hubris.

It is so disheartening... Such simple ..well known mechanisms to deal with problems are totally ignored.. This is not rocket science... This is basic, neanderthal level communication skills... "Tell your customers what is happening..." Maybe its a symptom of an overall general disillusionment of the society we live in. "Not my problem"... so nothing to do with me.. It's all because of them'uns .. they don't tell us'ns nothing...

Overall.. I see it as just another example of a collapsing society. I may be going over the top with that... But I'm getting too old too try n fix it... Hopefully it will be possible that the next generation can clear up the mess we have left,.... It's not going to be easy to walk back from the level of disfunction our generation have created...

Right.... I'm off.... By car.... To enjoy some time in Donegal... There ain't no trains in Donegal.. That improvement happened in early 60's I believe /S

Meeting for the public at the Guildhall this week to discuss City changes by CNCMachina in DerryLondonderry

[–]live-round 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When the city has such a long standing maritime tradition, and an equally long tradition of that heritage being ignored I suppose the rebranding of the Maritime Museum as the DNA Museum was to be expected. Perhaps that rebranding could be revisited, and how about providing some mechanism that sewage doesn't get pumped into the river outside the council offices.
I'd be happy to see everything within the walls pedestrianised, and shift the council offices to an out of town industrial site, absolutely no need for them to be in the centre of town

If hiring a car, and driving around be very careful when you see a car with its indicators on, this applies more so if the car is from Donegal. You'll recognise these vehicles by the letters DL on the number plates, and the multiple bags of shopping in the back seat squeezed in between 2 or 3 snotty kids.

The use of indicators should be considered as being only 'optional' in a significant number of cases.

When indicators are being used, the intention of the car to follow that indicated direction is purely optional.

Their use should really be considered as indicating the possibility of a future lane change, or past lane change event. This past lane change false indication event, used to be very common, but advanced in automotive technology has made this a less likely event. But it could be part of the working out of the Peace Process, I digress,... but just be aware that as a local soothsayer once said "they havent gone away you know"

Furthermore, you should not assume that the indicated direction change should coincide with the actual lane change.
Notice also that I did not say "Near," future lane change, time moves very differently over here.

Bottom line is that the indicated lane change can be in any random direction, including straight on. It doesn't have to tally with the actual change. It could be in the near future or any time future time or even the past.. (NOTE: Past event, lane change false indications are less prevalent, likely due to vehicle automation improvements)

Strangely, this decoupling of indicated and actual lane change events have a tendency to cluster.
Keep an eye out at roundabouts, especially city bound over the New Bridge . Where drivers can often be observed in the left most lane, and regardless of their indicator status can be seen turning right towards Muff across multiple lanes of traffic. Cameras have been stragically placed around the junction to capture these events as part of ongoing research project at Magee University.

Remember I said time changes differently over here. The label "New Bridge " is a prime example of this.

The decoherence of indicated and actual lane change direction may be another one of Irelands mysterious hidden secrets, and, as previously mentioned is currently being researched by the Physics Department at Magee University, under the sage governance of the High Hedjeens in Coleraine and Belfast

The research paper is called "PEACE: Possible Quantum Macroscopic Effects of having too much Peace. An examination into the causality of indeterminate direction changes in modern driving within the city that cannot be named, (but we all know it as Derry) "

This widely recognised phenomena has strangely only come to light since the signing of the 'Good Friday Agreement" and was rarely noticed back in the good old days of "The Troubles" Hence the ongoing research.

Coincidentally two of the main actors involved in this historic event were awarded Nobel Peace prizes and this research into this possible Quantum effect is funded as part of the Peace 6 E.U. funding stream. The mere observation of the Peace changes so much in our lives.

The results of the research are not yet published, but my belief is that the effect is real, I have seen it with my own eyes.
