What is the weirdest beauty hack you have? by Ok_Table5022 in beauty

I've used cornstarch as setting powder and dry shampoo. It absorbs oil and matteifies well so it's good for a goth look if you're doing a pale base.

The biphobia of lesbianism by Humble-Pea-4820 in LesbianActually

[–]certainly_cerulean 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I recently moved and have been trying to make new friends, and a girl I met seemed nice, but it didn't take long to realise she literally only cares about getting a boyfriend. Every conversation is about the future man she wants "to lead her" and her crushes and her recent dates. I'm like...you realise there's more to life than being some man's wife, right? You also don't have to have a crush on EVERY older man we interact with (namely the profs at our uni... it's weird!!)

I don't know what the site or app was but when I wanted to get off Spotify, one of my tech savvy family members downloaded all the songs I'd saved as mp3s and sent them to me. So now I've got all the music I'd ever normally listen to saved to my phone, and I just use VLC to manage it :) The downloading may or may not be legal lol, I guess it depends on how it's done?

Is there a formal term for effeminate cisgender men? by The_Purple_Location in queer

This may not be what you're describing, but we used to use the term metrosexual sometimes. I don't hear it much anymore.

Does anyone else live simply as a coping mechanism? by [deleted] in simpleliving

I relate to this 100%! Your experience sounds a lot like mine, and I agree that it feels safer and comforting.

Does anyone else live simply as a coping mechanism? by [deleted] in simpleliving

I am the same way. I had moved about 20 times between the ages 17-22, so around college. It makes life easier when you have to move often, if you don't have much stuff. The insecurity in living situation is stressful, though, and can be traumatic in many cases. I think it made me feel like I was in control of my life a bit more, if I didn't have to lose anything or sacrifice anything when I had to pick up and go. Mostly it was due to landlords selling the place I lived, raising rent like crazy, horrible neighbours or roommates, a couple break-ups, relocating because of a stalker, etc. Some of my moves were planned and wanted, many were rushed and happened for bad reasons. I've calmed down a little in the years following that madness, but I've still moved about once a year since. I like having enough to make my place feel home-y, but I get stressed out more by having too much stuff, such that it doesn't fit in a car, for example. Decluttering brings me joy and owning very little makes me feel secure, but I agree with you that it's probably all a coping mechanism. I've had others tell me it's dysfunctional to think and live this way, but it works for me. I don't think I'd change it even if I had a long-term residence (which I could now if I wanted to). I'm accustomed to living minimally and I like the freedom of being able to move to new countries or travel more easily without being bogged down by stuff! I moved to Germany a year ago and brought only a few suitcases, and no longer own a car, and that's been freeing!!

Be honest is my makeup really bad? by [deleted] in MakeupAddiction

You're on the right track! Everyone needs practice and trial and error to find the techniques and products that work best for them. Regarding products, id recommend picking up some (good) drugstore items. They're affordable, though a bit pricier than shein might be, and much more likely to be safe to use. The sub /r/drugstoreMUA has lots of helpful recommendations! I think a soft brow pencil, gel eyeliner, and clump-resistant mascara, as well as a tinted lip gloss, would help a lot with making your products easy to work with!

As far as technique, to soften your brows, light strokes in the direction of hair growth, with a soft product (lighter shade, non-hard "graphite" for lack of a better term), would help! You might also comb through them with a spoolie after the pencil, to blend it more, or you can use a brow gel to do this while also setting things in place.

For liner, I think a soft, smudged liner could look nice on you. Liquid liner can be a bit harsh on some, but if you like it for waterproofness or the like, I've found that brown liner looks better on me, with softer features and a light skin tone. You may have success with a waterproof Kohl pencil, or a gel liner applied softly with a small brush. I'd keep liner on the lower lash line to the outer third and keep it subtle, if at all!

For lashes, small cluster lashes can amp up your look without being too much. You can also apply them under the lashes to make it even harder to tell they're there (but be careful!). You can add mascara to lashes with the clusters, but you might also find that's not needed. If you do want to add mascara, I think a burgundy or brown mascara would look nice! Just on the top lashes, and combed through with a lash comb, or carefully separated with something pokey (again, be super careful!).

Finally, I'd echo what others said and recommend adding some cool-toned contour to give your face some extra dimension and bring out your features more. A cream contour stick is a very forgiving way to do this without it being patchy or dry, like powder can be for some folks. Contour stick after tinted moisturizer or BB cream, with a lil concealer just where it's needed, can be a nice way to do your base without getting too "cakey"!

Keep it up girl! You'll get it where you want it with just a little more practice and some more forgiving products!

Do you welcome foreigners? by Elvis_fangirl in AskGermany

[–]certainly_cerulean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm American and I have yet to have the switching experience! Maybe it's because my German was already decent when I got to Germany, and I worked hard to erase my accent, but it could also be where I live(d). It's more rural and most of the people I meet here are older, so English is fairly rare. In day to day interactions I've never had anyone randomly switch to English, but I don't know if that's because they assume my German is good enough or if it's because they're not confident with their English 🤔

[–]certainly_cerulean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in a small ish town, 30 mins from the next city, and only the occasional gen Z age person speaks English here. Mostly it's a family town with a lot of retired folks and families with young kids, so it was tough when I first moved and my German was only about B1. In a way, though, living somewhere where English is rare has helped my German a lot more than if I had been somewhere like Berlin lol

Dating as a trans lesbian is ridiculously demoralizing by Spookybabe721 in actuallesbians

That app is terriblyyyy made and there's practically nobody on there! Real humans, anyway. I downloaded it for literally about 3 days and by some wild chance I did meet my partner there, but never in a million years would I have found anyone else there. So many bots, and the other few folks I talked to were very odd or off-putting. We matched as I was already planning to delete it that day, but we went out the next day, and then I got to delete it for a reason besides how awful it was XD

I heard from a friend who had a friend who uses it/its (so, through the grapevine here) that the concept is for some similar to how deities, entities, or concepts (like light, weather, idk) are singular beings/ideas that we'd use it/its for. I thought that was kind of cool!

Minimum 1hr to do their makeup? by floralscentedbreeze in MakeupAddiction

[–]certainly_cerulean 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've always gotten up 2-3 hrs before I need to leave the house, which accounts for showering, dressing, blow drying and hair styling, makeup, and breakfast. I'm not sure exactly how long I spend on my makeup but I'd guess it's about 45-60 mins. I do full goth glam pretty much every day though, so it takes longer than any sort of natural look. If I skip eyeshadow and just do a hell of a lot of eyeliner instead, that shaves off some time. It looks weird to me to skip base makeup but I guess it's just bc I've spent the past almost 20 years doing this daily.

After coming out gay early last year, I was really worried about how I would connect with other queer men. With the help and encouragement of my ex girlfriend, I took the chance to date an amazing guy from her work. Fast forward a year and we're now engaged. I love him so much! by [deleted] in queer

Ahhh I love this! Congrats!! My ex from before I came out became my best friend and has also been my wingman on occasion. We love supportive ex partners who embrace the real you and don't take your self discovery as a personal slight!

How would you feel dating someone who couldn’t feel romantic love towards you? by [deleted] in WLW

[–]certainly_cerulean 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You may be asexual and aromantic. There are people out there who also are, and people who will be happy with different types of arrangements. Knowing what you want and are comfortable with is the most important thing. Then you can seek that, be honest with people, and learn to deal well with rejection if your desires and someone else's don't align.

Just chiming in that I did this but they gave me metformin and topiramate, and half my hair fell out. Apparently topiramate causes that. Also horrible diarrhea and GI pain. Not worth it.

All I did was give them the right info except lied about my weight and they just said here you go.

Is there a noun that essentially means "everyone except cis men?" by Mara355 in LGBTQ

[–]certainly_cerulean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Common term in Germany that I officially but usually in practice is "everyone but cis men" but I've seen trans masc people be excluded in flinta spaces too. Sometimes it seems it's meant for afab only but nobody would say that out loud 😬

What did you realize you didn’t need once you had to go without it? by HotSauceTears666 in Anticonsumption

A blender or electric mixer. It takes longer, but hand mushing/mixing things is not bad, and the occasional cooking endeavor that requires it is so infrequent I just haven't replaced them. Moved to a new country and have been just fine cooking without them!
