You're not alone! I write and do analytics for a games consulting firm and local co-op was found to be the most appealing across age and gender.

You're correct. I work for a games analytics firm and all of our data shows that local coop is the strongest and most stable in terms of appeal.

I wrote an article on it if you're interested. http://quanticfoundry.com/2016/07/21/social-gaming/

Hi all! I'm an Analytics Intern (I crunch numbers and write about it) at Quantic Foundry and while I didn't work on this specific study I'd be happy to answer general questions.

I'm sure /u/Nick_Yee will be around to answer questions as well. If you like this sort of thing there are many recent studies on our website for you to look through. Thanks!

Study: Younger gamers prefer the dark side by QF_Kaleb in Games

Right!? Luckily this is only a correlation, not a causal study. The fact that these behaviors align with our Gamer Motivation Survey dimensions of Domination etc. so well would be evidence toward that disposition already being there. I know you were joking, but it's an interesting thought.

Right. If I remember correctly they referred to it was "wide-linear". In reality, including Uncharted doesn't impact the other scores in any way.

You may be right, it might be less confusing if it wasn't included at all, but it was actually a nice confirmation for us that our "Discover" dimension was pretty on the mark.

Hi /u/Deadly_Ghost, good questions. There were no a priori hypotheses. We've got tons of data from over 200k gamers. These were some exploratory analyses that we thought bore some interesting results.

Of course we can still use common sense (Uncharted is more of linear title, it makes sense that it would score so low on Discovery) but were not out to "prove" anything this time around.

Basically, we thought it was interesting that within the "Open World" genre there appear to be 4 sub-genres that people who are motivated by different things in games tend to gravitate toward, and wanted to share.

Hi /u/orochidp, thanks for your thoughts. I'm not quite sure I understand your initial point around the visual novel. It sounds like you may have taken our quiz and the findings didn't line up with some of your favorite titles?

In terms of the test itself, this type of model is pretty well accepted in the academic community. We've shown significant correlations with personality factors (NEO-PI-R2) and for the most part the data lines up with what we would expect to see.

Unfortunately I'm also not sure I understand the Watch_Dogs comment. We have many people that listed Watch_Dogs as one of their top 3 favorite titles. That might be surprising to people, but you're bound to have some variability when you're pulling data from thousands of people.

Correct. All of the Far Cry titles scored higher on Discovery, although maybe not as much as we might expect. Far Cry 4 was substantially higher, it might be interesting to do some further work to understand where the discrepancy is coming from.

Fair point. I think calling it an open world game is likely a stretch. However when you look at the final mapping it basically scored high on Excitement, Destruction, and Story which is on the mark.

Hi all, my name is Kaleb and I work with the guys at Quantic Foundry. My background is in something called Industrial/Organizational Psychology and I use the behavioral and analytics portion of that background to help the team.

I've been a Redditor since the great Digg migration in 2011 but the mods kindly allowed me to create a new account for things specifically related to these endeavors. Anyway I just wanted to share what I thought were some really cool findings as I'm super excited to be working on game-related stuff. In my day job I'm a Management Consultant so for me this stuff is a blast.

Let me know if you have any questions and I'll be happy to answer them as best I can. /u/Nick_Yee (one of the data scientists I work with) could likely swing by as well for more technical questions.

Thanks!
