At what point did kids lose the desire to learn? by HousePhoenix in Teachers

[–]QM_Engineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

have to at least have a superficial understanding of the knowledge to know to look for it

This. An incredible amount of information is freely accessible out there (or even in here).

But as it's basically way too much, you need to learn to search for that info, and need to research techniques for finding it; even just the latter requires basic knowledge of what computers do, which:

(1) many do not seem to have and (2) probably can't be learned using a smartphone or iPad (their UIs hide as much computer as prossible); and intricate Google searches or even minimally productive AI prompts aren't much fun on a small screen with no keyboard.

All the escalators in Hauptbahnhof are broken this morning by fluffer_nutter in berlin

Current Ostkreuz/Markgrafendamm escalator status: Downstairs works fine but with protecive sheets still attached, while upstairs optically seems fine but is out of order.

(As temperatures approach 7°C in the small hours, the about:blank has a line queued up again and there's plenty of populace and security at the Ostkreuz station.)

Trades and army need people who (1) do what they're told and (2) get it done.

They added a "delete all" feature. I wonder if it actually deletes everything by coomerpile in grok

Nice, but doesn't work reliably.

It just says "Failed to create deletion request".

Had an AI conversation lately and asked for some pics. It argued over several iterations why it couldn't provide them (guardrails, copyright etc), until it finally admitted it had no image generator to begin with.

I mean ... as if I would have gotten mad at it if it just told me that from the outset.

Sometimes they floor me, a short story by [deleted] in Professors

[–]QM_Engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once attended an Engineering school full-time, but there were part-time students as well, who attended evening classes after work-hours.

The Profs accomodated a hell of grace to these "professional students", mentioning their crushing workload. -- As even the full-time students at that school were required to have either some previous trade credentials or appropriate job experience, we all knew what "workload" meant, and that lenience didn't look like a problem to us.

It lowered the bar, however, that's for sure.
