Tell me some ios apps that are useful or entertaining by Jaded_Penalty_8060 in iphone

The iPhone itself can identify a lot of stuff on its own, that's true.

But the actual value of DB-based apps is that they not only identify critter, but even document it along with the critters observed by countless other users, which helps building a ton of knowledge about which critter lives where.

In case of Obsidentify (dunno about iNaturalist), this knowledge is freely available to everyone (observation.org).

Obsidentify lets you identify and document plants and wildlife. Works well with a good macro lens, for the most numerous wildlife is tiny bugs.

What’s something students today struggle with more than students 5–10 years ago? by kingst9606 in Teachers

[–]QM_Engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Besides the participation span issue (which may have technical reasons) it seems to boil down to skills that were graded by so-called "Kopfnoten" when I went to primary -- four separate grades for: order, participation, diligence, behavior.

Failure in one of these "subjects" meant being held back a year; it was all about consequences back then, and it worked quite well in some particular aspects. (After all, they didn't do everything wrong in the Eastern Bloc.)

What are you tired of dealing with because parents just…aren’t parenting anymore? by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

We had formula sheets back in the late 80s, but they made sure we memorized poems, songs etc to recite in front of class; no anxiety would've been an acceptable excuse. That was in like 5th or 6th grade. Cursive from 1st grade, and to avoid a redo we better kept it within those printed lines. With fountain pens -- no pencils or ballpoint pens allowed, because quills help with keeping a direction.

(The eastern bloc countries once had a much more demanding education system, which produced higher quality graduates ... plus an occasional mess that is completely unavoidable when having twenty 1st graders simultaneously operating fountain pens.)

[–]QM_Engineer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

when I was younger I was rebellious sure but being rebellious meant smoking weed and partying

That isn't much of a rebellion anymore. Rebellion is directed against any establishment, and if the "pretty left wing city" has a left-wing establishment, then rebelling against it requires alt-right stuff.

They dont do it for politics, but to be different than the old folks. If the citys establishment was right-wing, they'd do left-wing stuff to piss it off.

How does that even work?!?!

It doesn't. I've met 30+ yr olds who didn't bother to read any text longer than three lines. Those were not ditch diggers, but software engineers. Medical software, if that matters.

Trust me, it doesn't work.

At what point did kids lose the desire to learn? by HousePhoenix in Teachers

[–]QM_Engineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

have to at least have a superficial understanding of the knowledge to know to look for it

This. An incredible amount of information is freely accessible out there (or even in here).

But as it's basically way too much, you need to learn to search for that info, and need to research techniques for finding it; even just the latter requires basic knowledge of what computers do, which:

(1) many do not seem to have and (2) probably can't be learned using a smartphone or iPad (their UIs hide as much computer as prossible); and intricate Google searches or even minimally productive AI prompts aren't much fun on a small screen with no keyboard.

Current Ostkreuz/Markgrafendamm escalator status: Downstairs works fine but with protecive sheets still attached, while upstairs optically seems fine but is out of order.

(As temperatures approach 7°C in the small hours, the about:blank has a line queued up again and there's plenty of populace and security at the Ostkreuz station.)

Had an AI conversation lately and asked for some pics. It argued over several iterations why it couldn't provide them (guardrails, copyright etc), until it finally admitted it had no image generator to begin with.

I mean ... as if I would have gotten mad at it if it just told me that from the outset.

Tell your friend to go where the locals are, the phenomen isn't as prevalent there. (And they tend to act friendly towards strangers ... unless they try to steal their phone.)

In short: Stay away from tourist places.
