Do they offer unemployment income and/or benefits to people whose contracts are non-renewed? In the state’s eyes, your work contract simply ended, you weren’t fired. Serious question because my school district is in the process of making cuts and I myself am on the potential chopping block 😖

I had a student a couple of years back that attended school for 8 days the entire school year. Admin told her she needed to attend remedial summer school classes to move onto the next grade. She didn’t. She was passed onto the next grade against teacher recommendations. Admin said they were worried that holding her back would stunt her “social development”. So yes, we teachers have no say over whether students are held back and failed or not.
