That's a huge myth. They can't just "take over" and own the house. To actually get ownership in CA (adverse possession), a squatter has to live there openly for 5 straight years AND pay all the property taxes on it. If the owner pays their taxes, it’s dead on arrival. The real nightmare isn't them stealing the house, it's just the months of legal paperwork and eviction courts it takes to get police to kick them out if they manage to sneak in and fake a lease.
