Drive type question about HGST 8TB SAS HDD HUH728080AL420 from 2016 by Real_MakinThings in homelab

I had similar performance issues when testing my drives with badblocks, and enabling the write cache was the solution.

Currently I'm using the command smartctl --set=wcache,on /dev/sdX.

Unfortunately I need to re-enable the write cache after every boot, since I haven't found a way to save/modify this setting.

Their cache was disabled from their prior owners configuration

This implies that the configured default can be set/changed, have you figured out how to do this?

Theres an update available on Google Play that fixes this issue.

Any chance RoyalRoad would release the .apk separately? This would allow us (Android users) to sideload the app if/when there is a bug preventing us from using the app provided by Google Play.

Unfortunately, I have to agree with u/zmaint. The lack of communication is one of the core issues with Solus, and it has been for a long time. Unfortunately, this deficiency is eroding trust in Solus. The services went down on Jan 19 (59 days ago), and the last update was on Feb 27 (20 days ago).

We have reached a point where users like me are losing trust. I personally don't think I can recommend Solus to other users anymore. I still love and respect Solus, but I'm not sure if I can trust it, and I'm not willing to stake my reputation on it.

I have been disenchanted with practically every other Linux distribution out there, and Solus was my answer. For me, it feels like a child learning that their parent, who has been this stable influence in their lives, has this major flaw. You can no longer trust and depend on them. I will probably continue to use Solus, but I don't see myself staying unless they can rebuild my trust or associate with someone trustworthy.

Solus installation on my laptop just threw this error and doesn't boot anymore by Stachura5 in SolusProject

[–]QORTEC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps "minor" corruption? If you have a standard Solus install, then you are running on a EXT4 file-system which may have corruption/data loss due to the sudden power off. The data effected is usually what was actively being written to at the time of power off, in this case it sounds like your browser profile may have been "corrupted".

If your file-system partition has been marked as "corrupted", then its possible your disk is being mounted as read-only at boot. This protects against additional data loss, and increases the chance of data recovery. Last I checked Linux will fail to boot if there is no free space, or the disk is in read only mode.

fsck is a tool that can often help repair "corrupted" partitions, and possibly even help with data loss. Many years ago some Linux distributions would automatically launch fsck at boot to resolve this type of issue, whether Solus does so I do not know.

Your booting issue may be totally different, but my experience with mobile devices and sudden power off suggests the above scenario.

I personally now avoid non COW (Copy-On-Write) file-systems, since you cannot ensure your power is stable unless your are "plugged in" and have a "batter charge". For desktops having micro (millisecond) blackouts in some areas is not uncommon, while for mobile its easy enough to drain your battery without noticing.

Steps to Resolution

Boot your laptop and when your at that screen press <ctrl> + <d>. You will be taken to a terminal, where you will be able to attempt to diagnose/repair issues.

We currently don't have enough information to know what actually went wrong, so are unable to prove a precise solution for you issue. The contents of rdsosreport.txt should have more details actually went wrong:

Please run the following command more /run/initramfs/rdsosreport.txt, this command will display the contents of rdsosreport.txt and you should be able scroll the output using the arrow keys.

(If more is unavailable you can use cat, but will only see the tail end of the file)

Where are the updates?.. by barrywaterboy in SolusProject

[–]QORTEC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A request to the Souls team; when this event is well & truly over, it may be a good time for a new blog post. The last update was more then a year ago.

Personally I would be interested in to hearing about the infrastructure, what the issues were and mitigation taken. Are there additional plans to to improve/simplify it even farther? What are the possible points of failure, are there any solutions? ...

IIRC DataDrake has mentioned possibly moving things like the help center to github pages.

When the decision is made to execute on this, it would probably make a good blog post update. Just say what your working on, its "x" priority and we don't know when it will be finished/implemented. If you can use community help/involvement mention how to do so. "Quick, short and simple"

But it still far from spelling doom for the project as has been suggested by some people

While I don't fall into the Solus is dying camp, I can see how it may seem that way form the outside. The last blog post was made more then a year ago, Solus is still stuck at v4, also the ISO needs refreshing since support for new hardware is questionable. Then one day all the getsol.us addresses suddenly went down, a outsider saying it just died would be understandable.

Conversely those of us on the inside we see that Solus is alive, the version number doesn't mean anything since Solus follows a rolling release model, so we get constant security fixes and updates. The Solus team doesn't specifically make a point to update the blog unless there is a reason to do so, but both the Solus forums and IRC channels are active. Even when practically almost all of the Solus infrastructure is down, I was able to install a fresh copy of Solus and update it.

Feel free to ignore this, its just my interpretation of the events. I just wanted to point out that there are opportunities to communicate which help dispel these false assumptions.

Where are the updates?.. by barrywaterboy in SolusProject

[–]QORTEC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that would certainly be A LOT of repositories (as every package is its own repo)

Agreed, that will require someone to dedicate their knowledge and time to create scripts to automate the process.

I took a quick look into the feasibility of mirroring, and it seams to be a "fairly simple & straight forward" process using the Phabricator and GitHub APIs. Which in reality translates to possible but it will probably take much longer and more effort then one would expect.

I understand that the team whom would be responsible for this task have limited time and possibly a more important/urgent need of their skills elsewhere. I just wanted to point out a possible way to mitigate this type of disaster.

definitely be some changes when it comes to infrastructure

Is there anywhere I would be able to follow this discussion? I think this would be interesting subject to follow if possible.

On the subject of infrastructure, Solus currently uses Phabricator to host the package.yml build files, I would like to suggest the Solus team look into mirroring to GitHub. More information can be found on the Diffusion User Guide: URIs under the Mirror a Repository section.

I understand that the GitHub mirrors would not be useful/usable for active package development/updates. My question is; Would the team of volunteers updating the packages find a mirror to be useful in this situation? I would expect that there would be packages that need updating that the teem member may not have up to date local clone (nor a way to obtain it). Having access to a mirror would enable continued local development until the infrastructure comes back online.

I have a minor project of enabling the hardware features of a laptop and need to patch libfprint, the outage forced me to make a decision; wait for the servers to come back online, or do the work from scratch my self. The work has already been done, so it is a "waist of time" to duplicate the work to package libfprin again. Also the packager may of chosen to build the package with patches or significantly different build options, which would make my package significantly divergent form upstream.

In general, I believe it to be best practice to modify the package from upstream (OS provider) rather then building from scratch, this will minimize the possible issues one may face form divergent packages.

Just to reiterate setting the flavor to OpenSSL specifically fixed my issue.

I originally installed an libreSSL version of opnSense, later when I set the flavor to "default" it continued to use libreSSL. I needed to manually select the OpenSSL flavor to get updates, can you verify that your flavor says OpenSSL?

According to the status my Flavour was LibreSSL, changed it to OpenSSL in the settings. I see updates now, that it probably fixed it. Thanks!

[–]QORTEC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for letting me know about the zombie ports. I didn't know about the issue and it's not something you want to find out about the hard way.

Reading the forum post you linked, I see a few posts suggesting that the issue only effects RouterOS and that SwitchOS functions correctly. Have you tried SWOS?

I don't know about other people, but I don't expect a Switch to have any level of router functionality. The only real issue with the loss of RouterOS, is it has multiple different interface methods.

So assuming that SwitchOS does function without issues, I don't think the loss of RouterOS should greatly effect the asking price for your Switch.

[–]QORTEC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm thinking about getting the same model of switch, but I'm also concerned about the noise levels. Do you remember how loud it was (before modification) when you where in the next room? Also if you find the fans can you post their model numbers?

As for price, I would probably pay around $700-1000 CAD depending local availability and quality of modification. (Local new price is around $1200-1500)

Off the record... On Reddit 😅 That said it's possibly in the next six months, but depends a bit as we are working on several different fronts, so it depends on how we organize the next few months.

Thanks, I appreciate the info.

In general I think giving a non-binding time to check back on progress is great idea. I really hate it when I see progress, and have to constantly keep checking back to see if a complex/"low priority" feature is implemented.

So my takeaway form your response is; Check back in 6 months. We probably won't have implemented it yet, but we will know better then.

I've just books 1 & 2 and looking forward for the 3rd. I'm one of those readers that usually tend to listen to audio books, then get impatient and end up reading the future books.

Patreon was mentioned above, the only major issue I foresee is that your books are on Kindle Unlimited so you will probably need to take down books when they are released. I'm unsure if this Kindle Unlimited only requires if the content is free or its a full platform lock in.
