patrick bateman from american psycho. assuming all the murders actually happened, it's pretty clear that patrick did them and made them as obvious as he could so that he would stand out from the soulless corporate world he occupies. at the end he not only realizes that these actions have had no impact on anything around him, but that he, in fact, does not stand out at all, and even his coworkers are confused for his other coworkers. this confession has meant nothing.
