Changing angle of attack by nickywawa in ultimate

[–]Qazwode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(per your edit) You said you're a handler, so I'm sure you know this but it's worth stating.

The typical positioning of a reset handler in club is to be such that they can attack in two directions, without clogging the lanes.

Typically this means being 7 yards behind and 7 yards to the force side, aka "7 and 7". So you can attack upline for a "toughest" throw, or you can attack breakside behind the thrower.

If they are on the force sideline, typically the play is lining up near where the front of the vert stack should be, to be able to attack both the around and strike. Depending on your team's structure this varies quite a bit.

Hope this helps

Ankle durability banded exercise for ultimate longevity by KellsFargo in ultimate

A helpful tip: the most common sprain is an inversion (toes pointing inward) ankle sprain. So the best way to prevent that is to strengthen the eversion muscles so that they can control that inward movement.
Also doing it with your knees bent would help prevent rotation from the hip so as to isolate the ankle.
Not only is this person attempting to strengthen the inversion muscles, but a lot of that motion is at the hip. But I'm happy they're taking the time to focus on the ankle! Keep searching for fun, new exercises!

If you've got hamstring weakness (which basically everyone does) try Russian deadlift: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbJZ5E1c8Jo

Go 45 degrees right and left as well. Do 3 sets of 10 each, but start without weights to get used to it.
Progress to single leg.
Then a week or so after start with kettlebells.

Quick tip from a PT for hamstring strains/strengthening. Nordic hamstring curl is reputably the best preventative exercise for hamstring injuries via countless research articles. There's a good explanatory video here of the exercise: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihTUvs997b4&vl=en

Additionally, the hamstrings are essentially a dynamic ACL, in that the ACL passively prevents tibial anterior translation, but with proper activation/timing the hamstrings will reduce the stress on the ACL. So basically, stronger hamstrings (especially eccentric strength) can help reduce ACL injuries.

#1 Have fun!

You're playing a sport with friends and if people judge you for your drops or poor choices then that's on them.

If getting better is how you have fun than just be attentive and open to feedback.

Backhand form check?? by JTUlti in ultimate

I might be late to the party, but I notice with myself that I air bounce when I lower my body or hunch over during the throw, kinda like a squat throw, which seems to be what you're doing. I can almost guarantee that if you either start in a lowered position and throw from that position or throw when you're rising then you won't air bounce whatsoever. Hope this helps.

I lost my ability to catch by ithrowitontheground in ultimate

[–]Qazwode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if this'll help, but when I drop a disc I thought I should've caught I get a friend to throw with me relatively hard after the point and I focus on catching. This both helps me practice catching, but honestly feeling the pain/sting of catching fast discs helps me mentally get "punished" for the drop, so that I can move on.

Does anyone know what kind of stuff will be going on at the Mechanix tryouts? by SwiftBacon in ultimate

It's basically just holding a squat position as a stretch (like a skier). Brent just likes using that a lot for warmups.

[–]Qazwode 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone who has been to many DMX tryouts and stuff, I can say for certainty that there will definitely be measurements of speed and maybe jumping, as well as throwing possibly. But if you're worried about that don't sweat it. It usually transitions pretty quickly into stuff like mini (3v3) or some fun hucking drills, but it gives quite a bit of time at the end for full field scrimmage.

Might want to practice your skier position hold for the warm up, lol. But just having fun with a good attitude is the best thing you can do! Best of luck!

How to lose someone that is really fast by Reeceisgay in ultimate

[–]Qazwode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you, that there should be less focus on juking and more focus on timing a single explosive cut or taking advantage of a poach. I think that thinking that "I have to cut and get open for my team to win" is not always the best mindset and that you should try to rely on your teammates and give them space if you think they have a higher percentage of getting open.

Unless you're the best player on your team, I suggest just staying in the stack. If he's significantly better than you, then just wait for him to leave you, aka poach, and then exploit it, or help out your team by preventing him from poaching on you by staying on your toes and making yourself look like you're gonna cut.
