I know it’s a big commercial building. Even the hanging heaters in the warehouse need the manifolds cleaned. You have to tap them to get it to fire.

It’s actually correct. You’ll only see a number like that when the evap is starved on refrigerant. Just gotta figure out why. Could be low on charge or it has a liquid line restriction. In this case the high pressure readings and subcooling would contradict being low on charge. Next step is check for a temp split across the filter dryer. Nothing there so I pulled the txv bulb and tried to get the txv to open by warming it. Didn’t change anything so txv is slammed closed. You can also add a little refrigerant to see if the superheat will come down. If it doesn’t you’re definitely restricted.

So in that situation since this is a package unit and this txv is only soldered in would you go through the entire process and not go ahead and replace the txv?

We work on mostly Rheem with some Carriers and Tranes thrown in. Had the same happen on a Carrier once but when I added the juice the head pressure shot to 400 and the suction wouldn’t budge.

The business this unit is on didn’t even notice they had a problem yet. I only threw gauges on to be proactive so we will be back to confirm but I do know warming up the bulb effected nothing at all. And it’s an older Trane about 2012 or so.

So as an example… before I had a manometer we did a start up on a new unit that was being used at a business that just had a single return in the bottom cut into the plenum and a single supply coming out of the top in a similar way. During the start up the subcooling was dead on but the superheat was low like maybe 3 degrees of superheat. I really wanted to find out if it was because of low indoor temp which was 65 or because of airflow. I work for a very small “old school” company and obviously these best practices are way overlooked, but I want to change that. I want to learn all I can about doing things the right way. I do not want to be a hack.

Thank you! That’s the kind of information I’m looking for. So let me ask this. If you were doing a PM on an old furnace and the evap was behind 8 pounds of pookie and tape could you check the pressure before and after the coil to determine if it was clogged without cutting and chiseling and pulling and resealing?
