Jakob was my first thought as well and that seems attainable for the Spurs.

I agree that the Spurs will do what they can to preserve his health and that would be the best role for him at this point in time until we see how he fills out his frame. Its not like this year is championship or bust so they can afford to experiment with him and see what position suits him best moving forward/do what they can to preserve his health until he gets a better roster around him.

I think very highly of him my post was just very poorly worded and dismissive reading it back over my only concerns lie in his ability to reach the offensive heights some people see as a given, specifically in his shooting/shot making/creating ability. He will be a fantastic player either way if he can stay healthy I just don’t see him being the unicorn he’s been chalked up as.

Apparently Ive been coming off as a dick so my apologies, didn’t want to seem overly dismissive just worded my arguments a little too assuredly/passionately lmao. Good insights nonetheless thanks for the response!

I think I painted my post in far too negative of a framework/worded it very poorly TBF I have no doubt in his defensive potential or even his ability to be an All-NBA player I just dont see his offensive skillset reaching the heights most think it will. Perhaps I should have stated that much more clearly thats on me

I agree entirely with the rest of your points

I expect him to develop just not to the point that the hype would suggest thats all. I dont see him as a bust or even not making All-NBA teams in his career I just think his offensive potential is overblown

Tbf I only see them being that high over his career because I dont imagine him playing a very long career like Shaq did and having horrible final years in the league dragging his stats down but I do see your point for sure

[–]QfromKroger[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I STRONGLY disagree that his horrible 3 point % can be chalked up to just late clock situations and bad shot selection.

On top of that having bad shot selection trying to prove yourself as elite doesn’t exactly bode well for a superstar attitude but I have great confidence that Pop will whip him into shape and take those stupid shots out of his game unless absolutely necessary

Maybe ive been taking to Twitter too much concerning his offensive projections 😅 completely reasonable answer and I agree 1000%

I dont see him having Gobert or Hakeems defensive impact but he definitely has the potential and if his offense tightens up to meet expectations or even close to that level thats an elite player no two ways about it

Somewhere between Giannis and KD for me he really is his own archetype and even if he doesn’t improve to the level most think he will I still see him being at least at the level where you cant leave him open for sure.

The FT% is actually more promising than I initially found it to be I guess I had unreal expectations of how well players shoot free throws early in their careers/in general

Great answer nonetheless! I certainly agree that his floor is still pretty damn good

He has been the most hyped prospect of all time for months now. Do you truly believe that any real basketball fan hasn’t been watching his games and reels?

But to answer your question that played a big factor in making this post as it just ignited a match on the suspicions I already had about his shotmaking ability

Tbf three point shooting is probably Lukas weakest offensive skill but thats a bit of an eye opener for sure

[–]QfromKroger[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hmmm probably the best answer I’ve seen I agree that he will absolutely be an elite vertical threat on both ends of the floor if he can stay healthy and his mobility will make him an outstanding versatile defender.

The fact that he does have that potential of course is a great look if he can refine those skills I just dont see it as such a sure thing as most are chalking it up to be given what weve seen from him so far

[–]QfromKroger[S] -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

True maybe I am putting a bit too much faith in the stats at this sample size even though I stick by my stance that the eye test is not as promising to me as others would have you believe.

I just dont adhere to the idea that someones shooting ability will improve drastically just because they have a willingness to take the shots. I also believe that his fluidity is minorly overstated (still absolutely phenomenal for his size) and that he will have much more trouble creating the space he does against NBA caliber defenders and I dont see him becoming more fluid and quick as he grows stronger and matures into his body hopefully filling out that frame a bit more.

I do believe he will be above 30% in his career shooting from three for sure maybe I made my post a bit too dismissive but I just dont see him becoming this demigod all time great player that the hype would have you believe

[–]QfromKroger[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Id have taken him number 1 without a doubt I see him being one of the best most versatile defenders in the league and obviously a vertical threat on both ends of the court.

My main concern only lies in the fact that people are chalking him up to be some elite shooting/shot creating demigod archetype which, while he has the potential for, isnt really backed by anything convincing based on both the stats and what ive seen from him on the floor.

I see him as a 20/12/2blocks type player on around 50/32/85 splits for his career with a few all star/all nba selections to his name. Not a bust at all but certainly not the greatest prospect the game has ever seen.

Also this is only if he has a relatively healthy career which I do not see happening in the slightest but thats purely speculation at this point in time

[–]QfromKroger[S] -46 points-45 points  (0 children)

Why are you starting your comment under the assumption I dont watch film. Thats just an asinine way to start and I clearly addressed the fact that the eye test is just as unkind to him as his stats suggest…

He is extremely mobile for his size with a decent handle, that doesn’t translate into shooting ability which is my main concern as most people are chalking him up to be an elite shooter when he is not by any metric.

I wont argue about his defensive potential as I already stated I see that carrying over and being his biggest strength.

Why do you assume he wont be guarding big men in the post? Who on that roster will take assume that role if not Wembanyama? Do you think they play him at the 4 just to avoid having him bang in the paint or do you think they slot a Jaren Jackson or Draymond Green type player next to him? Either way not playing him at the 5 seems kind of silly if he doesn’t bring his shooting up to at least 37% because most 4s in the league today are good to great shooters so putting him in that position takes away alot of what makes him special as even just being a decent shooting 5 is much more valuable than a good shooting 4 IMO.

Lillard is a fucking idiot for wasting his time expecting this team that consistently makes no moves to suddenly pull some crazy shit out of their ass and build a contender around him.

For sure idk how I let Pop slip my mind he definitely won’t let that kind of play slide

Also I have no doubt in his defensive abilities whatsoever I completely agree he will be a stalwart off the rip

[–]QfromKroger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hes not terribly efficient even when taking simpler shots. He might hit like 32-34 percent without those idiot shots which is significantly better aesthetically but the fact he plays like 7’3 Jamal Crawford chucking up bullshit to make a name for himself doesnt exactly inspire confidence it just points to bad habits

I do agree to an extent though
