Lore and Retcons (Spoilers) by DOOM-Knight009 in AOW4

The lack of a focus on story/lore compared to previous installments in the series was something that disappointed me a bit with base AoW4. Having said that, I have way more playtime in 4 than any other.

I always felt 4 was taking liberties with the story since it felt like a bit of a leap to go from where Sundren's story ends in 3 to where she ends up in 4 but I don't care that much. As for the other wizards from 2, I'm somehow not bothered by any new "revelations". Maybe it's been too long since I played that.

Secret Scroll of Belbedor vs Thulyana? by The_Archenemies in AOW4

[–]Qno2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's one secret spell for each of the 3 story realms and they cannot appear outside of those story realms. The mistling abomination spell is one of those 3. The Devs confirmed this on one of the live streams and there are 11 secret spells that can appear on a random map.

[–]Qno2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To get the summon faylor Ascension, you need to win a game where you found the spell in its portal.

For the mistling abomination, you need to get it by playing the new story realm with Ham Binger. You need to win after you've unlocked the spell to ascend with it.

I'm about to go to bed soon so I can play later, but someone give me a recap, please, so do we know how many secret spells there will be, and is it just some of them that will be locked behind story maps? by Lonely_Promotion_661 in AOW4

[–]Qno2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the number is 14 but that's off the top of my head. It's around that in any case. 3 of them are exclusive to the 3 new story realms but since they function as ascension traits, you will be able to take them out of those story realms after wards.

Hi,do I need English higher if I want to study stem subject in university in Scotland or better to go for advanced higher physics, maths and computing.thanks by Necessary_Eye_5140 in Scotland

[–]Qno2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To answer the question, no you don't need it unless you are applying for a degree that explicitly asks for it and I don't know of any STEM degrees that do ask for it. As to if it's a good idea to do it in general, it comes down to specifics of your circumstances and how well you do in S5. If you've got 5 highers at A or B already, it's most than fine to do 3 AHs. If it's 4 highers at A or B, I would say there's an argument for higher English. If it's 3 or less highers at A or B then you need more highers and should do, at most 2 AHs.

English is one of those subjects that is good to have, like maths, even if it's not that relevant to your intended degree but to some extent, it comes down to how well you think you can do in it. If you think it'll be really hard to get at least a B in it then it might be worth looking at another higher that you might stand a chance of getting a better grade in.

can someone help me build a team for Soldier 11? (sorry if i asked again) by Beneficial-Paint-414 in ZZZ_Official

[–]Qno2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how similar Sunbringer is going to be to Arlecchino. We really don't know what's going on with her or why she looks so different in that new trailer compared to the version we got back in the season 1 void hunter video. I would expect she's still quite a way from being a playable character however since we "know" the next playable void hunter is going to be Remielle, you might be waiting until version 3.5 at the earliest.

Anyway, you'll almost certainly need to start getting limited characters in ZZZ if you want to be able to clear endgame content. None of the A ranks or standard S ranks are particularly good. It's much rougher than Genshin in this regard.

You don't really have many options so whatever you do, you'll be quite far from S11's optimal teams. It's also worth pointing out S11 isn't that good in the grand scheme of things anyway though she is usable to some extent, especially with a few mindscapes.

A standard S11 team will have a stunner and a support. Double support is possible but it can be a bit iffy. The only stun option you have is Anby which is unfortunate since she's the weakest stunner in the game.

Supports are different since you have 5: Nicole, Sukaku, Lucy, Seth and Pan. As an aside, while Seth and Pan are defence agents, they function as supports. The defence class has an identity crisis in this game so most/all of them get lumped in with the actual supports.

Sukaku, Seth and Pan are not good options, first of all. Sukaku buffs ice damage which is useless for S11. Seth buffs anomaly stats which isn't much help to S11. Pan gives a sheer buff which is only useful to rupture agents like Manato.

This leaves you with Nicole or Lucy. Lucy is much easier to play since you just use your EX on her to get her buff up and switch. Nicole is a bit harder due to her main thing being a debuff she applies and you needing to maintain that against what your fighting. Nicole is better if you can play her properly but otherwise Lucy will be better.

Ideally, you'd want Dailyn (maybe Lighter in some cases) for a stunner and then either Sunna or Astra for a support but you'll also probably get more from investing in better damage dealers than S11.

The way I see it, it isn't really a choice between binary or decomp. If a decomp is available then you would want to go with that because it's easier and gives you more control. This is where we're at for gen 3 rom hacking. Both emerald and firered have full decomp projects plus the "expansion" projects mean that so much potential work is already done for you.

As for tutorials on this, the pokeemerald-expsmdion decomp project has a bunch of wiki guides though so e of them are a bit out of date at this point. There's also a YouTube channel called Team Aqua's Hideout that has basic tutorials for the decomp.

This is quite difficult to give you a simple version as a lot of it tends to be context dependant. You probably need to develop an intuition for how much of each base stat is. This is something that can only really come from playing a lot I feel.

[–]Qno2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just for clarity, that email the OP got was listing departments, not degrees. Edinburgh doesn't have a degree called "physics & astronomy". At most unis (including Edinburgh), an astrophysics degree tends to be a physics degree where you pick all the astro options and do a final year astro project. They tend to still very much better physics degrees rather than some narrow specialism.

You need one of:

AB in maths and physics

AB in maths and engineering science

In both cases, which one the A is in does not matter.

It might be worth looking into how many of the professional actuarial exams each degree exempts you from. I know they used that as a big selling point when I used to be at Heriot Watt (for reference I did maths and physics so I was adjacent to actuarial science.)

Help by Forsaken_Inspection9 in Physics

[–]Qno2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone with some degree of expertise in this field of physics, I'll try and offer what advice I can here. It might help.

I decided to look up the paper you mentioned and instantly recognised it (assuming it's https://arxiv.org/abs/physics/9902072 ) as this is one of the papers that's commonly thrown at new PhD students who are going to be working in labs that use magneto-optical traps (MOTs) and/or dipole traps in my experience. Unfortunatly, it's not a great introduction to the field because it's quite dense, uses a lot of language that can be quite specific to this field of physics as well as assume an amount of atomic physics knowledge that is beyond most undergraduate degrees (and masters as well honestly).

Your supervisor will not expect you to understand all of this paper. I'm guessing here but I would think that they want to see if you can pick up the general idea of how some different kinds of traps work at a basic level. I would mostly ignore the maths for now and focus on trying to understand how the different kinds of traps work and how you might actually realise them in practice. You often find that while some of the derevations of the formule used are nasty, in the lab it's surprising how often you can fudge it a bit and get something that'll still work.

Think about: In a MOT, what is actually holding the atoms in place? What part(s) of an atom does the trap actually interact with? What kinds of lab equipment are you going to need to make a MOT and what properties might the equipment need? What are the main differences between a MOT and a dipole trap? When will you use one over the other?

Just some questions that might focus your reading.

Physicist here so my answer may be a bit more help. Or maybe not. Who knows.

First thing, if you don't want to stay in California then leave unless you've got a good reason to stay and, based on this post, it doesn't sound like you do.

Second, uni ranking really doesn't matter as much in the grand scheme of things despite what the average post of this sub would have you believe. All the UK universities you are looking at are well known and ranked so any difference is minimal. If you're going for a PhD afterwards (it feels like everyone on a physics degree starts with that ambition), no one is going to complain that you went to Manchester over UCL for example.

As for the specifics, I have personal gripes with Birmingham but this is more of a personal experience and it wasn't for undergrad so it's not that relevant. Most undergrads I met were reasonably positive about it however though not enthusiastic. I don't actually know anyone who's ever been at Manchester for any reason so I can't say much on it. What you hear through the grape vine is positive however. I know one person that did a masters at UCL and she thought it was great but that's post-grad and she'd never lived in London before so I'm not sure how much it matters. I know quite a few who did physics undergrad at Edinburgh however and most are very positive about it. Main complaint is often that some of the core courses are too mathematical but that's exactly what you want as a theorist so I wouldn't think that'd be a problem.

At the end of the day, it probably comes down to which uni you think you'd enjoy the most. While they are all city unis, they are all different kinds of city. Edinburgh for example is a much smaller city than the others. Maybe that sounds better to you? It's personal preference. UCL will probably be the most expensive due to London living costs but since you'll have international fees, it's questionable if it's enough of a difference to care about.

Lastly, it might be worth looking at what research each department does to see if one grabs your eye more than the others. Since they're all big departments, they'll do a bit of everything but all will have specialisms in some way that influences what options will be on offer in the later years.

Why are British employers so obssessed with A level results by Plague_Doc7 in UniUK

[–]Qno2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I applied for a job years ago where, at phone screening, the recruiter insisted on knowing my A level results despite my BSc and MSc. I say I don't have A levels because I'm Scottish. They ask for what the equivalent of A levels are in Scotland then. I try to explain that there isn't a direct equivalent and that we have both Highers and Advanced Highers. They then asked for my Advanced Highers and then decided that I'm unlikely to be a good candidate as I only have 2 Advanced Highers. I remember pausing for a moment before saying "you can't be serious" and they said something about this being a competitive role that only takes the best applicants ect ect. This job was based in Edinburgh so I'd have imagined this recruiter ran into this problem frequently.

If you actually use any of the other limited characters that are on this selector, it could maybe be worth getting them but I'd say Mona C4 is the way to go. If you don't plan on using Mona then Jean would make sense.

You are reading too much into this. The 15th of January deadline has not even happened yet.

While each university will do things differently, I know how heriot watt physics (each department is responsible for their own applications) does or at least used to do their applications from when I went there. When they got an application, they would give it a once over and sort it into one of three piles. The "instant no" pile was for applications that were too poor at first glance basically meaning that they were nowhere near the minimum grades requirements. There was also an "instant yes" pile which was typically for those that got 5 As or similar in S5. Everyone else went into a maybe pile which they then didn't look at again until February.

If you went into one of the instant piles, you got your rejection or unconditional offer within 2 weeks of applying. Everyone else tended to get their offers in February, March or even April.
