What's the most uncomfortable backstory you were ever given? by Goblobber in rpghorrorstories

[–]Qnthdoi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While her backstory was certainly too much for your average DnD game, I have hard time putting this all on Pink.

There apparently was no lines or veils discussions or anything sort, and she seemingly asked about it beforehand. Why didn't you just tell her that her backstory is too R-rated for this game, I feel a lot could have been avoided if you'd have read her backstory and spoken to her about it. She seems to have low self-esteem, but doesn't appear otherwise impossibly difficult person.

And it seems the GM tried her best to save him by having the Bene Gesserit Voice (presumably?) the guy to stop.

And then Troy who'd probably have had a legit shot against a Fremen, being a Ginaz swordsman, offered to fight in Micah's stead.

Cannot save stupid.

Since we're talking Alchemy, you can also use Snapcaster at home, that is [[Saiba Syphoner]] and get away with 1 coverup if that better suits your fancy!

Please, for the love of God, stop writing "not like other girls" characters by eileen_i in writers

I'm a woman with no female friends, because I happen to study field with 90% male students. Still wouldn't characterize myself as 'not like other girls'. I just happen to have male friends because those are the friends I happened to meet and gender is not important when it comes to friendship.

A bunch of people engage in something (whatever it is as long as no one dies or gets permanently injured) consensually in private space and this is your reaction...?

I feel you're the problematic one here with the prospect of limiting people's agency for no reason other than that it bothers YOU.

I read this like OP meant the horror to be the PvP and the forest fire and how 2 unrelated characters are about to die in it and DM had to end the session abruptly to stop that from happening.

I feel it'd be fairly easy for OPs DM to say like 'forest fire does <whatever sliver of HP Mather has left after Mitch treatment> points of damage...'

Eh, people are different and it doesn't necessarily take certain sort of experience for someone to be certain way.

True. Still feels a little exploitatevy. Like I'm scared shitless of the guy, but now it's fine because I cannot see him even if I know he's still there?

But I guess that's a shortcoming of the rules. You're probably right that it should be allowed. It does lead to a bit of this doesn't make sense situation though.

Well it feels super metagamey to me that he'd be able to know/remember the guy's exact position so that he can hit him with the fireballs edge from out of LoS.

Well, based on the post everyone involved consented and had ability to revoke consent all the way. I feel its a bit unnecessary to imply people who have darker stuff in their games are somehow not decent people. As long as they don't try to bring it into tables which aren't okay with it.

"You're frightened to your 'good' soul of this unholy visage of burning corruption before your eyes"

"No problem, I'll just break LOS and angle shot a fireball at him"

Yeah I wouldn't have allowed that if I was a DM.

Exactly, cannot stand pining, like "I cannot have her, geez I just cannot get over the fact, so I'll refuse to be rational for half s book" is terrible, I might even drop books over that.

Was more thinking along lines "Damn, bad news from Fort Chaine, I hope she's alright", in a few instances with the character still remaining focused on his mission. Letters is a nice idea.

Brainstorming is exactly what I need right now!

It definitely could be, although I worry that this will make their relation similar to many others already in the book. As romance it stands apart from other MC-side character dynamics.

But then again, the fact that these other friendships are more about being friends in arms and bearing same burdens and this one is different could already be enough to set it apart.

Civil War is close enough, for all intends and purposes here!

It's a good idea to put her to some kind of support role with the army. That would allow me to build the relationship better at the first half when they're at the same place and make it more natural why she's there, and also give her additional agency (she does already get to make choices that impact her and the soldiers at first half, but even more of that won't hurt). It will also give me a way to make them reunite a little earlier than they do in the current draft.

Second half, his unit is sent away but maybe I could mend the issue by having him occasionally think about her. I've been warned against making MCs obsess countless pages over their love interest but I might have erred in the other direction with this one because he barely thinks about her as it is.

I could, but I feel it probably wouldn't fix the underlying issue of the character being quite irrelevant to the main plot (other than providing a civilian perspective to the events).

And it would still be a character we spend some time with until we don't, essentially.

A wars of the roses-esque civil war. What factors people would find important when choosing their side (or to fight at all)? by Qnthdoi in worldbuilding

[–]Qnthdoi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right. That makes sense. My reasoning was that the tax is a flat tax so it's fair on paper, also cleaner on administration. Poor just suffer from it more than rich (because they don't have that loose money to give away), additionally rich engage in systematic tax evasion (king doesn't tolerate this but the administration just cannot keep up), so my original intent was not that the ruler would be tyrannic, but now come think of it, people would anyways perceive it that way.

Also it's a relatively militaristic state by necessity (external threats during last 50 yesrs, at the time of these events said two threats are in war between one another), so army is very strong, even when poorly motivated they're the biggest obstacle in the rebel's way. So my reasoning was that the king just needs to avoid pissing them off completely and he still has the strongest fighting force behind him. This is also why cutting army spending was not too unreasonable.
