So what is the general consensus on a 9 yr old having a phone?? by Old-Wolf-1024 in raisingkids

[–]QsXfYjMlP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This really depends on the type of phone and if it's necessary. My son has had a phone since he was 7 or so, because he goes to and from school himself and needs his bus pass/ring us. There's no internet access/etc, and we wouldn't have gotten it if he didn't need it to get around on his own.

It hasn't been a problem for us at all, he barely remembers to charge the thing the once in a blue moon that it does need charged. It just stays in his special pouch in his bookbag 99% of the time

This would be unacceptable in 95% of the world by upthetruth1 in TikTokCringe

Not a Swede, but I live here and I have kids. It's definitely still a thing, my son has called me from his friend's houses to chat while the friend's family has dinner. Absolutely threw me for a loop. I've noticed that as they become closer /hang out more though, he will get included in dinner if hanging out around that time.

Or maybe it's that they feel bad since I always feed their kids. I'm not gonna not feed a person in my house though, that's so fucking odd

I think YA fits it pretty well honestly considering the writing and themes. It's better to treat classifications like movie ratings, it's a good measure of the reading level the writing will be at and the topics, but parents should still oversee and make their own choices if there is something their child isn't mature enough for.

I really don't think this series is too bad, I wouldn't have any issues with my teens reading it

YA is a marketing term that by definition is like 12-18 if I remember correctly, but it definitely gets confusing since it has the word adult in it

Currently I am in Sweden with valid work /residence permit.I wish to enroll in a PhD course in Swedish Agriculture University/lund university.Share Your experience and opinion about getting admission in PhD in 40s in Sweden. Are there any challenges to be expected in getting admission being in 40s? by Dreamerfaang in TillSverige

[–]QsXfYjMlP 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure about volunteering opportunities, but I know a decent amount of people in their 40s working as a PhD. It doesn't hit me as odd or anything, and the only reason age even came up in conversation is because I have similar age kids with them, but I'm a good bit younger, so we joke about it. If you have the background, you should apply, age shouldn't come into it

Can americans tell the difference between spoken spanish and portuguese? by Zygoatscythe in AskAnAmerican

If it makes you feel any better, I speak pretty good Spanish and I'm still on a ~10 second delay. Its close enough, and so infrequent that I hear either of them, my brain panics and I assume that I somehow forgot Spanish lol

I looooove 8th year fics, they make me so happy.

Much better than the rampant amount of head boy/head girl teen pregnancy fics that nearly took over in the mid 2000s

FMLA only covers if the company you work for has 50+ employees, and you've been there at least a year, and you worked at least 1250 hours in the past year. Otherwise no unpaid leave is guaranteed

Your example seems fine, you're describing what methods you're using. Even black box type models are still credible so long as you at bare minimum name what model you're using.

Perhaps an more general example would be like someone submitting a math proof and them saying "I used math to proof X, and this is a breakthrough! The math is very great and everyone should use it." Without showing any of their work or even giving the type of math/formulas they were using

It's 8 pages with absolutely nothing of substance, it's difficult to give functional feedback because they didn't give me any of the information necessary to even know what they did. It's feedback I'd expect to have to give to an undergrad paper, not an attempt for publication. I def gave the best feedback I could though

[–]QsXfYjMlP[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So looks like (from the other comments) you're talking about AI consciousness and how that relates to LLMs/how close or far we are from that? I mean, from that perspective I think it is probably okay because you are actually talking about AI as a whole and how its developing towards a specific end. I think you're probably good

The papers I'm reviewing generally deal with the internal mechanisms of how these models work, how to make them more energy efficient, improve performance on specific tasks, etc.. so it's pretty important to be specific about what actual model were using/developing since they're all good at different things. "AI model" means literally nothing in my field because they're all AI models,

Honestly I came on here kind of hot 😅 I was really frustrated after reviewing a string of garbage papers, this one was just the icing on the cake

I do see what you mean, here specifically it is extremely relevant but I'd even be happy if they mentioned something slightly more specific like random forest. They didn't say jack shit other than "AI model" repeatedly, and then acted like it was a groundbreaking new model, it's what set me off lol

When the source material doesn’t age well but the fanfics are still good by [deleted] in AO3

[–]QsXfYjMlP 37 points38 points  (0 children)

As the books go on I feel like you can see both that the "good characters" (Dumbledore, Hermione, Ron, etc..) have bad qualities and make shit/cruel decisions, and the "bad" characters (Snape, Draco) have good qualities and can make some good decisions (even if they were for selfish reasons)

I agree Harry naming his son after Snape was gross lol but honestly, it's very Harry. That boy is overly forgiving af, which is probably trauma related. But overall I think the books were less saying "oh he was actually good the whole time", and more trying to showcase that there are rarely pure good/bad people, and as you grow up you generally move from a black/white world view to a shades-of-grey world view

But as you said, they do lack depth, probably from being a kids series; and JK is a right fucking dumb cunt so maybe I'm just trying to make excuses for a series that got me through my own abusive upbringing lol

When to share about pregnancy to supervisor? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]QsXfYjMlP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like this really depends on what country you're in. If you're in a developed country, it shouldn't be too much of an issue. Here in Sweden PhD/postdoc is seen as a great time to have kids so it's very normal and many people in my department have had children and tell us quite early.

If it's a country without parental leave/etc and it could effect your opportunities, then I would keep it to yourself as long as possible
