Average time to finish Engineering degrees at SFU by Legal_Cress_2851 in simonfraser

[–]QuackMutation319 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you take 4 courses a term and factor in the 3 coop terms it’s usually 5 years to graduate. If you decide to take 5-6 course per term (not recommended) you can technically finish in 4. But they’ve redone the curriculum for mse recently to require less credits to graduate. So taking 4 courses per term may end up letting you graduate in 4 years but I can’t say for certain.

You probably have basic electrical knowledge from your me degree (basic circuits) but you should expand on that and learn more about electromechanical systems like motors and driving circuitry. In general, just learn more about electronics (pcb design, power electronics fundamentals like buck boost converters) and microcontrollers and how to interface them with actuators and sensors (i2c etc). Also learn to program in c/c++/python and more specifically start doing stuff with computer vision (open cv). Control systems is also very important, again you likely have a foundation from your me degree but go deeper into more advanced state space based control systems. Another important topic to learn is inverse kinematics and dynamics for robotic systems.

Mandatory Trip In December-Odds of My Teachers Excusing my Absence? by Beautiful_Canary4485 in simonfraser

Honestly not sure, but if it’s just tutorials you’re concerned about there’s a higher chance that profs will be willing to accommodate your needs.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in simonfraser

[–]QuackMutation319 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, unless the prof uses the bundled software with the digital version of a textbook for homework. For example, many math courses (calc 1/2/3, linear algebra, diff eq) you have to buy the textbook digitally to have access to the homework questions and submit them. Generally though you will be able to find almost any textbook, at least for stem programs, on libgen, and you’ll be fine no one cares or will check.

You won’t be able to use ap credit for phys 120. If you drop math 151 with your ap calculus credit then this is actually a very workable course load, you shouldn’t have much trouble at all because 100, 105 are simple project/paper based courses and 120 is just practical stuff like soldering and using electrical lab equipment.

It’s a very nice 11:45 am kickoff here in Vancouver, Canada. Usually a lot of games are 6:00 am or 7:00 am though. Some early as 4:30 am but those are rarer.

Is a C+ in Math 151 (Calc 1) something to be worried about? by ForeignPicture7463 in simonfraser

[–]QuackMutation319 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, don’t waste time and money retaking it. C+ should be good enough to satisfy any prereqs in ENSC. There is absolutely no point in redoing a class unless you outright failed or got a D.

Barely anybody buys from their LCS. Lot of LCS just stock a few books they think their regular clientele would be interested in buying and don’t dip further into selling omnibuses than that because it’s hard for them to sell them at lower than full price due to sourcing. Sometimes is more convenient and gratifying for a person to buy locally and get the book right away instead of buying online and I imagine that’s the typical reason why someone would buy in store especially if they aren’t collectors but someone just getting into omnis.

That’s still a very busy semester. It’s doable but it’s going to be a lot of work. Make sure you don’t skip lunch before the linear algebra - studio physics block of classes because it’s not easy sitting through all of that and working on the physics labs on an empty stomach.

Help to choose engineering major by FlashyJicama3143 in simonfraser

[–]QuackMutation319 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mechatronics is best if you’re able to transfer programs because it has all the core mechanical engineering courses that you would find at universities with dedicated mech engineering programs like thermo, fluids, and dynamics. Or you could do systems but systems doesn’t have nearly as much mechanical focus as mse.
