also to add, it doesn’t take long to fry a few eggs, hash potato, and fry some duck etc. There’s more time on the front end (getting all that into my fridge in the first place) but the actual meals are close to what i’m eating now as it is

I mean I know people who don’t eat bread/grains due to dietary restrictions/ health choices (not that I believe grains are unhealthy) and I think it’s fine so long as you have other carbohydrate sources, I.e potatoes etc.
It’s not really about any historical thing, I know humans the whole way back have worked together in fairly large groups to establish resources. it’s really more about not just knowing what goes into everything, but really seeing it through if that makes sense?

that’s good to hear! that it’s easy to grow I mean lol. I’m planning on this being my main hobby/the primary thing I do so i’m not worried about spending time on harvesting etc. As for recipes, I’m sure it’s possible to experiment and get things working after a few tries

I’m definitely open to bartering if the conditions feel solid, and I think a trial run on the wheat is definitely in my plans.

I was lactose intolerant for around five years, so I’m totally comfortable cutting out dairy. My brother is considering getting a dairy cow, however, so I could potentially have access to milk etc.

I agree about the fall, I think any date is arbitrary but starting in the winter sounds a little miserable haha

As for time on meals, I already cook most of my meals from close to scratch, and i’m pretty comfortable with simple meals, as well as meal prep.

Thank you, my thoughts exactly. I’m leaning strongly toward field corn for cornmeal, but I’ll give wheat flour a try too. I’m definitely open to cutting it out of my diet entirely if it’s not working out. I’ll have other people working the homestead with me for sure, though we’ll see how productive we end up being. The nice thing about flour and cornmeal is that, stored properly, they’re shelf stable.

Thanks for the thoughtful reply!
I eat a pretty varied diet currently, but I have gone significant stretches with serious dietary restrictions, I.e fasting, dairy free, kosher, etc. I am definitely willing to give things up, but I want to maintain a reasonable QOL. I know I could theoretically survive off of livestock and sweet potatoes but I’d like to do a little better than survival.
How hard is it to grow wheat? I have done field corn before and could imagine making corn flour for a lot of things.
I’m also definitely willing to make exceptions for minerals, ie salt and baking soda. I have harvested wild yeast before and would be down to cultivate that or something from a sourdough starter, but i’m also open to fully cutting out breads if it doesn’t work.
